Behavioral Responses Of Pine Vole Young And Adults To Olfactory Cues, Lynette A. Geyer
Behavioral Responses Of Pine Vole Young And Adults To Olfactory Cues, Lynette A. Geyer
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Ultrasonic vocalization rates of young pine voles are highest when pups begin to move into and out of nests and exhibit olfactory directed movement. As olfactory preferences become established and movement is coordinated, a decline in vocalization appears in pine vole. In the presence of home shavings young pine voles emit high rates of vocalization, while rat pups emit calls at a low rate. This contrast may relate to the intensive attachment of young pine voles to the mother in early life. In preliminary studies of adults, priming either the male or female with the odor of a prospective social …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
The Third Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposium was held in New Paltz, New York, February 14-15, 1979 to further create an awareness of the fruit growers' serious tree girdling problem. The meeting served to focus attention on a diversity of information on animal biology, control strategies and information dispensing mechanisms. Research funding sources, chemical and cultural control methods, clearance of new materials, and governmental involvement in pine vole problems were discussed.
Progress Report -- Experimental Comparison Of Vole Control Methods, Don W. Hayne
Progress Report -- Experimental Comparison Of Vole Control Methods, Don W. Hayne
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
At last year's meeting in Beltsville, William T. Sullivan, Jr., read a paper describing an experiment we had set up to compare vole control methods (Sullivan and Hayne 1978). In particular, this investigation attempts to measure the effect of clean orchard culture. This year I am describing some of our experiences with this experiment, with a preliminary appraisal of the different methods of study. Obviously, our observations must be accepted as very tentative, made as they are so early in the experiment.

Review Of Endangered Birds. Management Techniques For Preserving Threatened Species, Ed. Stanley A. Temple, Paul A. Johnsgard
Review Of Endangered Birds. Management Techniques For Preserving Threatened Species, Ed. Stanley A. Temple, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
In 1977 an international symposium brought together scientists having expertise in the conservation and management of the world's endangered species of birds. The resulting publication includes 50 papers that were presented at the symposium, together with some concluding remarks. Although this is certainly an impressive assemblage of papers and topics, it should be noted that only about 40 species are mentioned in the proceedings, as compared with a total of 265 species and 140 subspecies worldwide that are currently believed to be threatened.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Under an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Interagency Agreement, we evaluated the hazards to wildlife associated with aerial 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) baiting for California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi fisheri). We conducted the study in Tulare County, in south-central California, in the eastern foothills of the San Joaquin Valley. Vegetation is annual range grasses and associated forbs, under open stands of oak (Quercus spp.), with cottonwood (Populus spp.), California sycamore (Platanus racemosa), and California buckeye (Aesculus californica) along stream bottoms. The study monitored a large-scale operational baiting program conducted in Tulare County by the …

Redescription And Comparison Of A Highly Fossorial Mole, Domninoides Mimicus (Insectivora, Talpidae), From The Clarendonian, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The holotype of the species, Domninoides mimicus, is based on one tooth. Described in the present report is material containing a practically complete dentition and many postcranial elements which definitely belong with the teeth. This species is closely related to Domninoides valentinensis described by Reed (1962), but some of the antemolars in valentinensis are misidentified. The tooth formulas for valentinensis and for mimicus are given. Development of the cingula on the upper and lower molars in mimicus is conspicuous. Because of similar features in the postcranial bones, the Clarendonian mole may be as fossorial as Scalopus, probably the …

Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech
Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The wolf (Canis lupus) is a wide-ranging social carnivore with a complex spatial organization (MECH, 1972; 1973). The precise manner in which this organization is maintained is unknown, but territory advertisement using olfactory and acoustic modes seems to be involved.
The acoustic mode includes primarily howling. Within a wolf pack, howling may be useful to reassemble separated members (MECH, 1966; THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967), and may communicate information on individual identity, location, and other behavioral and environmental contingencies (THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967). Between packs, however, howling may serve to advertise territory, communicating the locations of packs and thus …

G79-476 Composition Of Feeds In Relation To Cattle Nutrition, Paul Q. Guyer, Foster G. Owen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide examines the major nutritional components of cattle feed. Plants serve as the major source of feed for livestock. Nutrients required for maintenance and production are provided by various plants and plant derived feeds along with small amounts from non-plant sources. The major constituents of plants are water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals and vitamins. Both plants and animals contain these nutrients, but the relative proportions vary more in plants.

Gathered and Edited by Robert Frerichs and Paul A. Olson.
The fact that every known culture and civilization has acquired some sort of set of sacred stories is important. The eleven sacred stories in this work have multiple purposes. They possess a value as sheer entertainment; they also tell truths and lessons which explain the meaning of existence. Thus the Santee listener could fmd his place in the world and achieve an inner harmony through hearing stories. The characters in these stories are …
G79-465 Urinary Calculi (Waterbelly) In Cattle And Sheep, Ivan G. Rush, Dale Grotelueschen
G79-465 Urinary Calculi (Waterbelly) In Cattle And Sheep, Ivan G. Rush, Dale Grotelueschen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication discusses the symptoms, management and treatment of various types of urinary calculi diseases in cattle and sheep.
The term "urinary calculi" refers to deposits in the urinary tract. These deposits may block the flow of urine, particularly in male cattle and sheep. Prolonged blockage generally results in rupture of the urinary bladder or urethra, releasing urine into the surrounding tissues. This produces the condition commonly referred to as "waterbelly."
Two types of urinary calculi, both mineral in nature, predominate in cattle and sheep: (1) the phosphatic type formed principally under feedlot conditions and (2) the siliceous type occurring …
G79-467 Livestock Water Quality, Paul Q. Guyer
G79-467 Livestock Water Quality, Paul Q. Guyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The purpose of this report is to discuss what is involved in livestock water quality and how one goes about getting an analysis that will help in determining this quality, and to assist in the interpretation of such an analysis.
A successful livestock enterprise requires a good water supply, both in terms of quantity and quality. While shortage is obvious to the stockowner, he sometimes needs the help of a laboratory in evaluating the quality of a supply. The purpose of this report is to discuss what is involved in livestock water quality and how one goes about getting an …

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
The first question one must ask of a work of literary art is purpose. Once the purpose is clear, the method of construction can be seen, and the workmanship better evaluated. There is no better shortcut to an author's purpose in construction than to see where he ends: He has total control over where his words go. Presuming a planning author rather than an automatic amanuensis, which school of writing has its adherents, one has as a corollary a literary law: if X is where the author arrived, X is where he intended to go, meditating all the while on …
Update Of National And State Programs Presently Underway To Curb Point And Nonpoint Sources Of Water Pollution From Animal Production Facilities, Donald F. Smith
Update Of National And State Programs Presently Underway To Curb Point And Nonpoint Sources Of Water Pollution From Animal Production Facilities, Donald F. Smith
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
P.L. 92--500, The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, has provided two mechanisms for the control of water pollution from animal production facilities. Point source controls require that confined animal production facilities apply for a NPDES permit in order to operate. Nonpoint source controls, as established by State and area-wide water quality management programs, are to be developed around the concept of "Best Management Practices."
Differentiation Of White-Tailed And Mule Deer Blood And Tissue By Isoelectric Focusing, David Oates, Ken Pearson, Nancy Dent
Differentiation Of White-Tailed And Mule Deer Blood And Tissue By Isoelectric Focusing, David Oates, Ken Pearson, Nancy Dent
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Blood and tissue samples from 66 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) and 69 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were examined by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel slabs in the pH range 6-9. Blood was differentiated via a general protein stain. Tissue differentiation required use of esterase patterns rather than general protein patterns. Esterase patterns of white-tailed and mule deer tissue differed considerably from each other in both number and location of esterase bands. Protein patterns for blood were not as distinctive as the esterase patterns were for tissue, but white-tailed and mule deer could still be differentiated from …
G79-434 Feeding Guides For The Ewes, Ted Doane
G79-434 Feeding Guides For The Ewes, Ted Doane
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
In utilizing the information in this publication, the sheepman and those advising him must keep in mind the ultimate objectives of the production program in question.
The major problem in nutrition is the definition of the desired animal function. Maintenance of the ewe, for example, is generally thought of in terms of the dry ewe. Yet maintenance of productive functions is a constant cost in ewe nutrition, whether she is pregnant, lactating, dry, or in the process of being bred for another year.
In utilizing the information in this publication, the sheepman and those advising him must keep in mind …
Wheat Straw And Sodium Hydroxide Treatment In Beef Cow Rations, C. W. Acock, J. K. Ward, Ivan G. Rush, T. J. Klopfenstein
Wheat Straw And Sodium Hydroxide Treatment In Beef Cow Rations, C. W. Acock, J. K. Ward, Ivan G. Rush, T. J. Klopfenstein
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Two cow drylot wintering trials and a lamb digestion trial were conducted to evaluate wheat straw in maintenance diets for gestating beef cows. Wheat straw or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treated wheat straw, when fed ad libiturn with one-third alfalfa hay, supported gestating cow weight gains equivalent to a limitfed alfalfa-bromegrass diet. Cows fed NaOH treated wheat straw supplemented with soybean meal and minerals gained less weight (P<.01) than cows on the other treatments. Calf birth weights, calving difficulty and subsequent reproductive performance of the cows were similar for all treatments. Apparent digestibility of wheat straw was increased (P<.01) by 4% NaOH treatment in a lamb digestion trial but was not altered by balancing the sodium intake with other specific minerals. The increase in digestibility of wheat straw due to NaOH treatment was greater in vitro than in vivo.

Components Of Variance Associated With Service Sire For Milk Yield And Reproductive Traits, L. P. Johnson, L. Dale Van Vleck
Components Of Variance Associated With Service Sire For Milk Yield And Reproductive Traits, L. P. Johnson, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The association of service sire or sire of fetus with three milk yield traits and two reproductive intervals were investigated. Two procedures for estimation of variance components, Henderson's Method 1 and Method 3, were applied to a model of herd-year-season, sire of cow, and service sire. Analyses were for sire of calf born to initiate second lactation and service sire of the cow in second lactation. About 11,000 second lactation records on Holstein cows were available after editing for breeding and calving dates. Service sires and sires of cows were required to be in artificial insemination. Estimates by Method 1 …

Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson
Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Sets Knight's Tale in the tradition of political verse, and argues that the tale encourages peace in the domestic and foreign affairs of Chaucer's England. The hortatory, heroic style of the tale presents Theseus as a peace-making ideal, pertinent to the French wars of the time. The juxtaposition of the Miller's Tale with the Knight's Tale encourages placid relations with the peasant class.
Several critics, both neoclassic and modern, have observed that) as to kind, the Knight's Tale is an epic fiction. Characteristically, the poems we call medieval epics are what Ezra Pound also says an epic must be in …
