Component Causes Of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis - The Role Of Moraxella Species In The Epidemiology Of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis, John Dustin Loy, Matthew Hille, Gabriele Maier, Michael L. Clawson
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Moraxella bovis can cause infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK).
The role of M bovoculi in IBK is not fully understood.
M bovis and M bovoculi appear to undergo genetic recombination with each other or other members of the Moraxellaceae.
Recombination complicates their classification and potential role(s) in IBK pathogenesis.
MALDI-TOF MS is used to identify M bovis, 2 major strains or genotypes of M bovoculi, M ovis, and other members of the Moraxellaceae.
Classification and determination of pathogenesis potential within Moraxella species may be better understood through whole genome sequencing.
Does Integrating Crops With Livestock Production Impact Soil Properties And Crop Production?, Lindsey Anderson
Does Integrating Crops With Livestock Production Impact Soil Properties And Crop Production?, Lindsey Anderson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Re-integrating crop and livestock production through cover crop (CC) and corn residue grazing could efficiently utilize resources and ensure profitability while improving environmental quality, but how this integration affects soils and crops is not well understood. We conducted two studies to address this. In the first study, we evaluated the impact of cattle (1.3-3.7 head ha-1) grazing an oat (Avena sativa L.) CC on soil and crop yields in two adjacent irrigated no-till corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max L.) fields on silt loam soils in eastern Nebraska. Field I was grazed twice, while Field …
Gut Community Response To Wheat Bran And Pinto Bean, Shuen Leow
Gut Community Response To Wheat Bran And Pinto Bean, Shuen Leow
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There is general consensus among the scientific community that dietary fibers reduce the risk of Western diseases through their fermentation by beneficial microbial communities in the human gut. However, dietary fibers in wheat bran (WB) and pinto bean (PB) are incompletely fermented by the gut microbiota. Therefore, there is a critical need to identify gut microbial communities that can increase fermentation of dietary fibers from these foods to maximize their disease-preventing properties. The goal of this study was to identify such communities with increased capacity to ferment the dietary fibers in WB and PB. To accomplish these goals, a stepwise …
From Starter To Finish: Learning The Literacy Of Sourdough, Molly Mcconnell
From Starter To Finish: Learning The Literacy Of Sourdough, Molly Mcconnell
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Using the New Literacy Studies and the work of James Paul Gee, the process of making sourdough bread is conceptualized as a literacy, which is then located within food literacy. The literacy of sourdough offers an alternative to neoliberal discourse. The literacy is linked to the rise in popularity of sourdough during the COVID-19 pandemic and is used to explore Bourdieu’s cultural capital. It also connects, rhizomatically (Deleuze and Guattari), and is used to explore concepts of interdependence and time. After establishing this literacy, a pedagogically- focused essay draws upon ecocomposition to expand on what a composition process would look …

“The Revolution Will Not Be Supervised": An Investigation Of The Efficacy And Reasoning Process Of Self-Supervised Representations, Atharva Tendle
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Transfer learning technique enables training Deep Learning (DL) models in a data-efficient way for solving computer vision tasks. It involves pretraining a DL model to learn representations from a large and general-purpose source dataset, then fine-tuning the model using the task-specific target dataset. The dominant supervised learning (SL) approach for pretraining representations suffers from some limitations that include expensive labeling and poor generalizability. Recent advancements in the self-supervised learning (SSL) approach made it possible to learn effective representations from unlabeled data. The performance of the fine-tuned DL models based on pretrained SSL representations is on par with the state-of-the-art pretrained …
Corn Co-Product Logistics: An Application Of Linear Programming, Dmitry Kalashnikov Adams
Corn Co-Product Logistics: An Application Of Linear Programming, Dmitry Kalashnikov Adams
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this thesis is not to explore new ways to apply or to study the general field of linear programming. Rather the emphasis is on applying a particular type of linear programming to a specific problem. In this thesis the classic case of linear programing - the transportation problem – is used to optimize corn co-product logistics between six ethanol producing facilities. At the core, the problem of corn germ logistics lies in transporting products from areas of excess supply to areas with excess demand. The challenge of optimizing corn germ logistics lies in managing transportation between producing …

The Effect Of Agkistrodon Contortrix And Crotalus Horridus Venom Toxicity On Strike Locations With Live Prey., Chase Giese
The Effect Of Agkistrodon Contortrix And Crotalus Horridus Venom Toxicity On Strike Locations With Live Prey., Chase Giese
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This paper aims to uncover if there is a significant difference in the strike location of snake species that have different values of LD50% venom. It is thought that most snakes strike their prey in the anterior (head) area in order for their venom to work quicker in killing them. Venom toxicity is measured by its LD50% value, which is the amount of venom, in mg/kg, to kill 50% of a test population. The Copperhead has an LD50% value of 10.9 mg/kg, and the Timber Rattlesnake has an LD50% value of 1.64 mg/kg. The hypothesis was that if venom toxicity …
Drinking Water: Iron And Manganese, Bruce I. Dvorak, Becky Schuerman
Drinking Water: Iron And Manganese, Bruce I. Dvorak, Becky Schuerman
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Iron and manganese are two naturally occurring drinking water contaminants that can cause poor taste and odor issues, and be associated with discoloration that leads to staining of fixtures, dishes, and laundry. They are primarily found in Eastern Nebraska groundwater and most people mention these issues when iron levels exceed 300 micrograms per liter (µg/L) and manganese levels exceed 50 µg/L. Levels of iron can be much higher and are not associated with health concerns but manganese concentrations above 300 µg/L may pose a health issue for rice or soy formula-fed infants. Higher levels, over 1,000 µg/L, may pose a …

Introduced rodent populations pose significant threats worldwide, with particularly severe impacts on islands. Advancements in genome editing have motivated interest in synthetic gene drives that could potentially provide efficient and localized suppression of invasive rodent populations. Application of such technologies will require rigorous population genomic surveys to evaluate population connectivity, taxonomic identification, and to inform design of gene drive localization mechanisms. One proposed approach leverages the predicted shifts in genetic variation that accompany island colonization, wherein founder effects, genetic drift, and island-specific selection are expected to result in locally fixed alleles (LFA) that are variable in neighboring nontarget populations. Engineering …
Characterization Of A Novel Glycerol-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (Gpd2) In The Alga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Itzela A. Cruz Powell
Characterization Of A Novel Glycerol-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (Gpd2) In The Alga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Itzela A. Cruz Powell
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, like many eukaryotic microalgae, accumulates triacylglycerol (TAG) under certain environmental stresses, such as nitrogen deprivation. TAG is of interest because it is an essential precursor for biofuel production. Canonical glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenases catalyze the synthesis of glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P), a key precursor for glycerolipid and TAG synthesis in eukaryotes. The C. reinhardtii genome encodes six GPD homologs. Interestingly, GPD2 is a novel multidomain enzyme, consisting of a phosphatase motif fused to a G3P dehydrogenase domain. GPD2 expression is significantly up-regulated under nutrient deprivation or high salinity, coincidental with the accumulation of TAG or glycerol. Conversely, RNA-mediated …

Development Of An Intraperitoneal Catheter Placement Device For Use On The Battlefield, Riley Reynolds
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The objective of this project was to simplify peritoneal cavity access so an Airforce field medic can safely infuse oxygen microbubbles (OMBs) into the intraperitoneal space for the emergency treatment of hypoxia due to lung damage. To solve this problem, we created an intraperitoneal catheter placement device for use on the battlefield. The three common methods and some of the most common devices for peritoneal cavity access were reviewed. Injury frequencies for each of the three methods were analyzed. The results showed that each of the access techniques gives a similar rate of iatrogenic injury.
The battlefield conditions where the …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Background: Nellore cattle (Bos indicus) are well-known for their adaptation to warm and humid environments. Hair length and coat color may impact heat tolerance. The Nellore breed has been strongly selected for white coat, but bulls generally exhibit darker hair ranging from light grey to black on the head, neck, hump, and knees. Given the potential contribution of coat color variation to the adaptation of cattle populations to tropical and sub-tropical environments, our aim was to map positional and functional candidate genetic variants associated with darkness of hair coat (DHC) in Nellore bulls. Results: We performed a genome-wide association study …

Bioaccumulation And Partitioning Of Heavy Metals In Cicindelidia Haemorrhagica In Yellowstone National Park, Monica Gotschall
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The tiger beetle Cicindelidia haemorrhagica (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) are widely distributed in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and exclusively living on thermal areas. Heavy metals including arsenic, copper, lead, and selenium are present in these thermal springs, presenting an unique environment for C. haemorrhagica. Therefore, from 2018 – 2020 I sampled adult C. haemorrhagica from YNP and adult C. haemorrhagica from a known population in a salt flat in Idaho not associated with a hot spring and measured heavy metal concentrations. All populations of C. haemorrhagica bioaccumulated heavy metals. Cuticular waxes showed small concentrations of metals indicating that those metals are …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Chloroviruses are unusual among viruses infecting eukaryotic organisms in that they must, like bacteriophages, penetrate a rigid cell wall to initiate infection. Chlorovirus PBCV-1 infects its host, Chlorella variabilis NC64A by specifically binding to and degrading the cell wall of the host at the point of contact by a virus-packaged enzyme(s). However, PBCV-1 does not use any of the five previously characterized virus-encoded polysaccharide degrading enzymes to digest the Chlorella host cell wall during virus entry because none of the enzymes are packaged in the virion. A search for another PBCV-1-encoded and virion-associated protein identified protein A561L. The fourth domain …

Interplay Between Mirnas And Lncrnas: Mode Of Action And Biological Roles In Plant Development And Stress Adaptation, Xianxiang Meng, Aixia Li, Bin Yu, Shengjun Li
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Plants employ sophisticated mechanisms to control developmental processes and to cope with environmental changes at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), two classes of endogenous noncoding RNAs, are key regulators of gene expression in plants. Recent studies have identified the interplay between miRNAs and lncRNAs as a novel regulatory layer of gene expression in plants. On one hand, miRNAs target lncRNAs for the production of phased small interfering RNAs (phasiRNAs). On the other hand, lncRNAs serve as origin of miRNAs or regulate the accumulation or activity of miRNAs at transcription and post-transcriptional levels. Theses lncRNA …
The Ungovernable Novel: Towards A New Political Imaginary, Joseph Turner
The Ungovernable Novel: Towards A New Political Imaginary, Joseph Turner
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The primary objective of my thesis is to provide an initial definition of what we could call the “ungovernable novel.” I borrow the concept of the “ungovernable” from the field of political theory, and I apply it to the theory of the novel by way of an engagement of Mikhail Bakhtin’s and Georg Lukács’ theories of the novel. Building on this theoretical foundation, I argue that our contemporary political imagination has reached a historical juncture: we must abandon the dystopian framework that we have inherited from the Cold War, and we must move in the direction of the ungovernable novel. …

A naturally occurring bovine model with excess follicular fluid androstenedione (High A4), reduced fertility, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)-like characteristics has been identified. We hypothesized High A4 granulosa cells (GCs) would exhibit altered cell proliferation and/or steroidogenesis. Microarrays of Control and High A4 GCs combined with Ingenuity Pathway Analysis indicated that High A4 GCs had cell cycle inhibition and increased expression of microRNAs that inhibit cell cycle genes. Granulosa cell culture confirmed that A4 treatment decreased GC proliferation, increased anti-Müllerian hormone, and increased mRNA for CTNNBIP1. Increased CTNNBIP1 prevents CTNNB1 from interacting with members of the WNT signaling pathway thereby …

Phenotypic Plasticity Of Diverse Sorghum Varieties In Response To Nitrogen Deficit Stress, Mackenzie Zwiener
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The movement of nutrients from old vegetative tissue to young leaves and reproductive organs is known as senescence. Senescence can be influenced by the environment of a plant, such as, drought, heat, and nutrient stress. These environmental stressors can also influence canopy architecture. Crop canopy consists of several traits including: leaf number, angle, length and width. Past research in crops like maize and rice have shown significant influences of more erect leaves, including, the ability for increased planting density, which optimizes light interception and increases yield. In a field trial of a sorghum association panel including 345 different sorghum varieties …
