The Secret Life Of 1/N: A Journey Far Beyond The Decimal Point, Christopher Lyons Aug 2016

The Secret Life Of 1/N: A Journey Far Beyond The Decimal Point, Christopher Lyons

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The decimal expansions of the numbers 1/n (such as 1/3 = .03333..., 1/7 = 0.142857...) are most often viewed as tools for approximating quantities to a desired degree of accuracy. The aim of this exposition is to show how these modest expressions in fact have much more to offer, particularly in the case when the expansions are infinitely long. First we discuss how simply asking about the period (that is, the length of the repeating sequence of digits) of the decimal expansion of 1/n naturally leads to more sophisticated ideas from elementary number theory, as well as to …

The History Of Algorithmic Complexity, Audrey A. Nasar Aug 2016

The History Of Algorithmic Complexity, Audrey A. Nasar

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper provides a historical account of the development of algorithmic complexity in a form that is suitable to instructors of mathematics at the high school or undergraduate level. The study of algorithmic complexity, despite being deeply rooted in mathematics, is usually restricted to the computer science curriculum. By providing a historical account of algorithmic complexity through a mathematical lens, this paper aims to equip mathematics educators with the necessary background and framework for incorporating the analysis of algorithmic complexity into mathematics courses as early on as algebra or pre-calculus.

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article revisits an integral of radical trigonometric functions. It presents several methods of integration where the integrand takes the form 1+/- sin x or 1+/- cos x. The integral has applications in Calculus where it appears as the length of cardioid represented in polar coordinates.

Plato On The Foundations Of Modern Theorem Provers, Ines Hipolito Aug 2016

Plato On The Foundations Of Modern Theorem Provers, Ines Hipolito

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Is it possible to achieve such a proof that is independent of both acts and dispositions of the human mind? Plato is one of the great contributors to the foundations of mathematics. He discussed, 2400 years ago, the importance of clear and precise definitions as fundamental entities in mathematics, independent of the human mind. In the seventh book of his masterpiece, The Republic, Plato states “arithmetic has a very great and elevating effect, compelling the soul to reason about abstract number, and rebelling against the introduction of visible or tangible objects into the argument” (525c). In the light of this …

Aesthetics In School Mathematics: A Potential Model And A Possible Lesson, Hartono Tjoe Aug 2016

Aesthetics In School Mathematics: A Potential Model And A Possible Lesson, Hartono Tjoe

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Earlier studies on improving classroom practice in mathematics have suggested a closer attention to nurturing an aesthetic appreciation for mathematics in students’ learning experiences. Recent evidence nonetheless reveals little indication of its presence. This article offers a potential model of the case for aesthetics in school mathematics. Central to this model is the harmonious hierarchy of necessity, existence, and uniqueness without any of which the case for aesthetics in student learning might be suboptimal, if not untenable. This article offers an example of the proposed model using a possible lesson designed to engage students aesthetically in the learning of mathematics. …

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In the fall of 2012, leaders from Columbia Basin First Nations and tribes participated, along with about 150 other people, in the 4th transboundary symposium convened by the Universities Consortium on Columbia River Governance. Gathered on the shores of Flathead Lake in Polson, Montana, the participants explored the interests, rights, roles, and responsibilities of indigenous people in the international Columbia River Basin. This symposium generated two notable outcomes: first, The Columbia River Basin: A Sense of the Future—a synthesis of interests and concerns with regard to the future of the transboundary river basin as captured by the Universities Consortium during …

Laying The Foundation For Effective Natural Resource Management, Teresa Scanlon May 2016

Laying The Foundation For Effective Natural Resource Management, Teresa Scanlon

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

The following portfolio describes three distinct, yet not mutually exclusive, approaches for managing water and other resources. A common theme throughout the three approaches is that they “lay the foundation” for future management, and each piece depicts a different approach to natural resource management planning. Part One is the final report for a research and planning contract for Lolo Watershed Group. Watershed science and restoration field techniques are used to inform and develop a scope of work document for Montana Department of Environmental Quality for a future revegetation restoration project on Lolo Creek. Part Two describes some of the co-facilitation …

The Mass Of Men Lead Lives Of Quiet Desperation: A Study Of Unconventional Point Of View And Narrative Structures In Contemporary Fiction, Spencer J. Ruchti

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The Mass of Men Lead Lives of Quiet Desperation, a novel-in-progress written by the researcher, examines the phenomenon of unconventional point of view and narrative structures within contemporary fiction. The project consists of the creation of a novel that implements an unconventional narrative structure and a literature review that examines the tradition of unconventional narratives in contemporary fiction, while also analyzing how these unconventional narratives work in relationship with reader at psychological and emotional level. Unconventional narratives include any narrative not told in traditional structures of first person singular past or present or third person singular past or present …

Studying Structure And Function Of Ybgl – An E. Coli Protein Of Unknown Function, Savannah Whitfield Apr 2016

Studying Structure And Function Of Ybgl – An E. Coli Protein Of Unknown Function, Savannah Whitfield

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Endonuclease VIII (nei) is a DNA repair enzyme that cuts single damaged bases out of DNA. In Escherichia coli (E. coli), it is made along with four other genes (in the nei operon), but the functions of the other genes are unknown. Chromate is an environmental toxicant that creates the kind of DNA damage that is recognized by the repair protein encoded by the nei gene. In this study, we wanted to see if we could use chromate to investigate the function of the other four genes that are made at the same time.

To test this, single gene deletion …

Chute Cutoffs And Alluvial Point Bar Morphodynamics: How Rivers Move Over Time, Caelan Simeone Apr 2016

Chute Cutoffs And Alluvial Point Bar Morphodynamics: How Rivers Move Over Time, Caelan Simeone

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The reach of the Clark Fork River just west of Missoula is quite dynamic, and due to erosion and deposition of sediments can shift quite rapidly during floods. During spring runoff in 2012 the main channel of the Clark Fork River about 1.3 miles west of the Reserve Street Bridge scoured through the point bar (a type of gravel or sand bar) on the inside of a meander bend and created a new channel. This event is called a chute cutoff and is one of two main ways that rivers cut through their banks to create new channels. Understanding of …

Linking Native And Invader Traits Explains Native Spider Population Responses To Plant Invasion, Jennifer N. Smith, Douglas J. Emlen, Dean Pearson Apr 2016

Linking Native And Invader Traits Explains Native Spider Population Responses To Plant Invasion, Jennifer N. Smith, Douglas J. Emlen, Dean Pearson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Theoretically, the functional traits of native species should determine how natives respond to invader-driven changes. To explore this idea, we simulated a large-scale plant invasion using dead spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) stems to determine if native spiders’ web-building behaviors could explain differences in spider population responses to structural changes arising from C. stoebe invasion. After two years, irregular web-spiders were >30 times more abundant and orb weavers were >23 times more abundant on simulated invasion plots compared to controls. Additionally, irregular web-spiders on simulated invasion plots built webs that were 4.4 times larger and 5.0 times more likely …

A Significant Threat To Neuropsychological Test Validity, Meredith K. Reynolds, Brook E. Clark, Stuart Hall Apr 2016

A Significant Threat To Neuropsychological Test Validity, Meredith K. Reynolds, Brook E. Clark, Stuart Hall

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Objective: Neuropsychological test security is vital to the validity of assessment. Previous research in our lab has shown that 71% of participants use the Internet to prepare for neuropsychological evaluations (Kimpton, 2015). We investigated the availability of information related to neuropsychological tests on the Internet, a topic that has received little attention in the research literature.

Participants and Methods: First, we decided a priori that we would not reveal the terms used in this Internet search, as to not contribute to the problem of threatened test security. We used the Internet search engine “Google” to begin a search using a …

Hydrological Response Of Alpine Wetlands To Climatewarming In The Eastern Tibetan Plateau, Wenjiang Zhang, Yonghong Yi, Kechao Song, John S. Kimball, Qifeng Lu

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Alpine wetlands in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) play a crucial role in the regional hydrological cycle due to their strong influence on surface ecohydrological processes; therefore, understanding how TP wetlands respond to climate change is essential for projecting their future condition and potential vulnerability. We investigated the hydrological responses of a large TP wetland complex to recent climate change, by combining multiple satellite observations and in-situ hydro-meteorological records. We found different responses of runoff production to regional warming trends among three basins with similar climate, topography and vegetation cover but different wetland proportions. The basin with larger wetland proportion (40.1%) …
