The role of higher education within U.S. society has broadened. As colleges and universities expand their work beyond the core teaching and research functions, staff become more involved in mission-delivery than they have been historically. In the past, staff primarily served in supportive roles, but now also lead initiatives such as outreach and community engagement, workforce and economic development, international programs, and more. This broadening mission underscores the importance of staff within the higher education organizations’ mission-delivery functions. How proficiency-related information is represented in task fMRI depends not only on the data themselves, but on the representational lens used to summarize them. This thesis examines second-language (L2) proficiency as a problem of representational organization rather than as a simple classification exercise. Using task fMRI from adult language learners performing semantic animacy judgments in their native language (L1) and second language (L2), I derive shared low-dimensional network representations with principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA), then evaluate those representations under matched leakage-controlled decoding pipelines.

Background: 
Refractory chronic cough (RCC) is a prevalent condition that substantially impairs quality of life and is associated with significant physical, psychological, and social burden. Behavioral cough suppression therapy (BCST), delivered by speech-language pathologists, is an evidence-based nonpharmacologic intervention shown to improve cough-related quality of life. However, variability exists in how BCST is implemented, and the relative contribution of specific treatment components remains unclear.

Objective: 
To evaluate the effectiveness of a BCST program implemented in a community otolaryngology clinic that emphasizes consistent suppression at the urge-to-cough and neuroplasticity-informed behavioral principles.

The foundation of high-level sport performance is the ability to produce and express force rapidly across the task-specific temporal demands of sport. Traditional percentage-based prescription methods have long been used to develop hypertrophy, maximal strength, and power; however, fixed %1RM prescriptions fail to account for daily undulations in athlete readiness, accumulated fatigue, and changes in neuromuscular capacity. Velocity based training (VBT) offers a practical framework to regulate training through measurement of concentric velocity, allowing coaches to more accurately prescribe loads, stringently monitor repetition quality, and precisely regulate fatigue. This study investigates patterns of decomposition and biomolecular preservation in domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) proxies under varying burial conditions in a cold, seasonal climate. Conducted at the Lubrecht Experimental Forest in western Montana, the project aims to evaluate DNA degradation, microbial activity, and environmental influences across shallow, deep, surface, and secondary burial contexts. Three pigs were placed in distinct burial treatments (surface exposure, partial burial, and full burial), with a fourth site later added following bear disturbance and carcass relocation. Human identification is a central goal of forensic anthropology and forensic molecular anthropology, particularly when remains are skeletonized, fragmented, degraded, or otherwise visually unidentifiable. Although skeletal elements such as teeth, the petrous portion of the temporal bone, and major long bones are commonly prioritized for DNA sampling, they are not always available, intact, or suitable for destructive analysis. This dissertation evaluates DNA preservation across the post-cranial skeleton to determine whether anatomical location, biological sex, and age-at-death influence DNA quantity and downstream forensic genetic success.

In recent decades, northern conifer forests have experienced larger, more frequent and more intense wildfires. Severe, stand-replacing wildfire substantially reduces forest nitrogen (N) stocks, a critical nutrient that often limits net primary productivity on land. Continued increases in wildfire activity may exacerbate forest N limitation in the future. Yet, while research shows N stocks in northern conifer forests recover following severe wildfire, the processes that contribute to rapid increases in N during post-fire regeneration are unclear. Atmospheric deposition of N and known sources of biological N fixation cannot explain the observed post-fire N accumulations. This paradox raises the question: How …

Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) has emerged as a promising experiential therapeutic intervention, yet the lived experience of adults participating in EAP within residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings remains underexplored. This hermeneutic phenomenological study examined the lived experience of 12 adults who participated in EAP groups during residential SUD treatment across three treatment facilities in the United States. The primary research question was: What is the lived experience of participating in EAP for adults in residential SUD treatment? Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through iterative hermeneutic interpretation guided by van Manen’s (1990) existential framework.

Axially loaded weight may impose a metabolic demand equivalent to that of fat mass (FM) during load carriage. Males (M) typically have a lower body fat percentage than females (F), resulting in metabolic demand differences during load carriage that may be mitigated by accounting for FM in pack loads. PURPOSE: To determine whether normalizing pack load to FM equalizes metabolic cost across sexes during load carriage. Accurate estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) remains challenging in forensic anthropology, particularly in arid and high-elevation environments where decomposition processes and insect activity are highly variable. Postmortem microbial succession has emerged as a promising alternative framework for PMI estimation. However, the effects of climate and elevation on microbial decomposition dynamics remain insufficiently characterized.

Scholars and activists identify agroecology as a crucial science, practice, and movement to move towards more just, equitable, and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Yet, the exploitative industrial food system, that deepens inequalities like food insecurity (Clapp et al., 2025), reduces farmer autonomy (Rotz, 2015), and contributes to increased carbon emissions (Lin et al., 2011) and biodiversity decline (Rotz, 2015), still dominates. Long-term satellite image archives enable ecological monitoring at large scales, but manual extraction of fine-grained features (e.g., beaver dams) remains time-consuming. Machine learning models may automate these tasks, but their temporal transferability for multiannual monitoring is still poorly resolved.

We evaluated the performance of two complementary neural-network frameworks across a 100,000-hectare watershed in Montana USA, using a decade of satellite imagery (2014-2024): (i) a single-class ResNet-50 beaver dam detector, and (ii) a multi-class ResU-Net landcover classifier.

Competing expectations about strength, care, and protection shape how presidential leadership and authority are constructed in contemporary U.S. politics, particularly for members of marginalized communities. This thesis examines Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign as a case study to explore how candidates negotiate competing understandings of political authority through appeals to Lakoff’s (2002, 2008) Strict Father Morality and the Nurturant Parent Morality. An analysis of her campaign reveals that Harris repeatedly appeals to both moral frameworks, constructing authority through empathy, mutual responsibility, and care while also emphasizing threat identification, protection, discipline, and moral strength. The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 is a landmark in United States environmental law. For more than half a century, under its authority, all federal agencies contemplating proposed actions that pose significant environmental impacts have incorporated an analysis of those impacts into their decisions. These analyses provided an avenue for opponents to challenge an agency’s final decision in federal court. This report details the wetland and riparian mapping methodologies implemented for the Wetland 38 Utah East and CO project. The project area consists of 167 1:24,000 US Geological Survey (USGS) quads across Western Colorado, with quads across Larimer, Gunnison, Eagle, La Plata, Pitkin, Garfield, Montezuma, Rio Blanco, Mesa, Saguache, Dolores, Rio Grande, Pueblo, Grand, Moffat, Teller, Hinsdale, Jackson, Montrose, Routt, and Huerfano counties. There are also quads across three Wyoming counties (Sweetwater, Albany, and Uinta) and 8 Utah counties (Duchesne, Daggett, Grand, Carbon, Uintah, Emery, San Juan, and Utah).
