The Effect Of Accountability On Dialectical And Elaborative Complexity, Gavin W. Ploger Apr 2018

The Effect Of Accountability On Dialectical And Elaborative Complexity, Gavin W. Ploger

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

This experiment examined how accountability to an audience with unknown views influenced the integrative, dialectical, and elaborative complexity of people’s statements. The experiment tested 185 undergraduate students randomly assigned to one of two conditions: No Accountability and Accountability. Participants in the No Accountability condition were assured their responses would be completely anonymous. Participants in the Accountability condition were told they would have to explain their views to another individual, but not what that individual’s views were. Participants responded with their views on 4 controversial social issues: abortion, immigration, climate change, and gun ownership. Hypothesis One: Individuals who are accountable to …

Portrayal Of Married And Unmarried Women In Bhojpuri Folksongs, Srijeet Mukherjee Apr 2018

Portrayal Of Married And Unmarried Women In Bhojpuri Folksongs, Srijeet Mukherjee

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Folksongs and traditional music have for long been an area of study. Traditional music "reveals especially the individual views, customs and prejudices of a people” (Engel 1866: 6, 206). Bhojpuri people, culture and language originate from parts of southern Nepal, various districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Western Bihar and some areas of Jharkhand in India. The Bhojpuri people have a lasting tradition of folksongs which have centuries of history affiliated with them and the inventory of these folk songs is still flourishing. Bhojpuri folksongs depict patrilocal, patriarchal and patrilineal Hindu joint families and women in the Bhojpuri society have for …

Community And Individual Responses To Flooding On Louisiana's Last Inhabited Barrier Island, Lauren Miller Apr 2018

Community And Individual Responses To Flooding On Louisiana's Last Inhabited Barrier Island, Lauren Miller

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

This case study attempted to better understand local attitudes of public flood interventions and their individual responses to flood risks on a remote barrier island—Grand Isle, Louisiana.

People have lived Grand Isle for over a century and the island has been an efficient community for tourism, seafood, and petroleum in the past. However, today’s residents are confronting social and environmental challenges that early settlers of the island did not experience. For example, oilfield employment on the island has dwindled and seafood workers are facing challenges within the surrounding natural environment. Both industries are now having to compete within the globalized …

To Know Is To Grow: How Different Types Of Contact With Transgender Individuals Is Associated With Varying Levels Of Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Oak Reed Apr 2018

To Know Is To Grow: How Different Types Of Contact With Transgender Individuals Is Associated With Varying Levels Of Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Oak Reed

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In societies around the world, transgender individuals are often stigmatized and discriminated against due to their gender identity. Previous research suggests that transgender individuals, compared to other highly stigmatized sexual minority groups, experience some of the highest levels of prejudice (e.g., Dispenza, Warson, Chung, & Brack, 2012; Hughto, Reisner, & Pachankis, 2015; etc.). Importantly, gender-based prejudice is associated with negative mental health outcomes, particularly major depressive disorder and attempted suicidality (Nemoto, Boedecker, & Iwamoo, 2011; Clements-Noelle, Marx, & Katz, 2006). Therefore, examining and deploying methods to reduce anti-transgender prejudice may provide a socio-cultural approach to reducing mental health disparities among …

Intentional Danger: Understanding Risk And Identity Within Mountaineering, Mira Cleveland Apr 2018

Intentional Danger: Understanding Risk And Identity Within Mountaineering, Mira Cleveland

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

This study seeks to examine how identity is navigated within ‘risky’ situations, and ultimately how this may contribute to crisis situations. From understanding and accepting the inherent dangers of driving a car, to the potential of falling off of a step ladder when reaching for a dish on the top shelf, risk is an accepted part of life. However, there are risks fundamental to extreme adventure sports that reach beyond the everyday accepted risks. In the case of mountaineering above 26,000 feet, climbers accept the risk of lost money in the event of a summit failure, frostbite when unexpected time …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa Apr 2018

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (an artifact; a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. The problem is that the object of ideological desire is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Historical Archaeologist Mark P. Leone attempted to locate such an object several times while conducting archaeological investigations into historical Mormonism, Mormon historical ecology, and technologies employed by Mormons in the arid American West. It is posited here that the object of Mormon ideological desire in the archaeological record within …
