Mathematical Moments: Autoethnographic Excursions With A Mathematical Outsider Sociologist, Michael Corbett Jan 2018

Mathematical Moments: Autoethnographic Excursions With A Mathematical Outsider Sociologist, Michael Corbett

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this essay I offer some reflections on the field of mathematics education, and particularly the sociopolitical analysis of mathematics education that has emerged in contemporary scholarship. Here I attempt to do two things. First of all I respond to a recent book on “disorder” in mathematics education, identifying some themes and problematics that I find intriguing and generative from my perspective outside the field. Here I reflect on the way that mathematics is positioned in educational discourse generally as a proxy for human capital and general intelligence. Next I relate stories from my life and practice as a primary …

Mathematics Education (Research) Liberated From Teaching And Learning: Towards (The Future Of) Doing Mathematics, Jean-Francois Maheux, Jerome Proulx Jan 2018

Mathematics Education (Research) Liberated From Teaching And Learning: Towards (The Future Of) Doing Mathematics, Jean-Francois Maheux, Jerome Proulx

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Now, what do you make of that? We want to discuss mathematics education, and research in mathematics education (we don’t really need to specify, hence the parenthesis). And we want to address teaching and learning (mathematics, but we skipped the parenthesis this time around because we used the word just before) in terms of not-being. You will notice, however, the provocative presence of “liberated”, a strong verb which alludes to the idea of freedom while acknowledging certain constraints: captivity, dependence, and even liability. Its selection was a bold choice. But having made such a suggestive statement (without actually saying things …

Mathematics Education And The Juggernaut Of Capitalism, Roberto Baldino, Tania Cabral Jan 2018

Mathematics Education And The Juggernaut Of Capitalism, Roberto Baldino, Tania Cabral

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article undertakes an ideological critique of mathematics education from a capitalist perspective. By replacing ‘society’ with ‘education’ and ‘the figure of the Jew’ with ‘mathematics’ in quotations from philosopher Slavoj Žižek, we characterize mathematics as the symptom of educational ideology. From such substitutions, we get statements like: Education does not exist and Mathematics is its symptom. In order to explore the kernel of truth in these statements, we introduce two concepts: identity-quilted-speech, to specify the so-called certainty of twentieth century mathematics (M20), and qualified-labor-power, to characterize the commodity that results from school production. Through the development of these concepts, …

Language Use In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen Jan 2018

Language Use In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

A totalistic social group is defined as a collection of individuals who share similar values and goals and who live together within intensive boundaries enforced by the group’s leadership and/or members themselves (Lifton 1969). The focus of this project is to better understand the effect of language on (I) a totalistic group’s social structure and (II) the ideologies and actions of members. The limited linguistic research on totalistic groups claims that leaders and members use language in order to enforce rules and beliefs, encourage conformity, and maintain as well as increase membership. By examining language practices in the US military, …

The Formation Of A Citizen-Police Encounter And Its Effect On Dispositional Outcomes For Traffic Stops In A City And County Jurisdiction, Darby A. Semenza Jan 2018

The Formation Of A Citizen-Police Encounter And Its Effect On Dispositional Outcomes For Traffic Stops In A City And County Jurisdiction, Darby A. Semenza

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This research extends Donald Black’s (1976) theory of law to a large, more diverse sample of traffic stops than previous research. The theory suggests that with every citizen-police encounter, there is social distance separating the two parties. This distance is based on observable characteristics of both the officer and citizen involved. Specifically, their gender, age, race, demeanor, and whether they differ across these variables or not. A large difference in “social distance” increases the likelihood that an officer will cite a motorist; while a small distance reduces this likelihood. Social distance is the amount of diversity between two parties in …

The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman Jan 2018

The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The removal of soft tissue from skeletal remains is a process familiar to a wide array of scientific fields and the methods used to perform it are likewise numerous yet inconsistent. In forensic investigations and crime labs across the country, there lacks a standardization for this process. This lack of standardization pairs with a distinct lack of literature on the potential benefits and risks associated with each method as well as basic information on the proper amount of additives, temperatures, or time estimations. In a forensic context, human remains may be the only evidence available, which makes any damage or …

The Effect Of The State Giant Traveling Map Of Montana On The Geographic Literacy Of Fourth Graders In Western Montana, Rebecca A. Kranitz Jan 2018

The Effect Of The State Giant Traveling Map Of Montana On The Geographic Literacy Of Fourth Graders In Western Montana, Rebecca A. Kranitz

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A complex set of factors and processes operating within the United States public education system contribute to high rates of geographic illiteracy in the majority of young adults. These factors include, but are not limited to, a lack of structured federal controls over state geography requirements, insufficient time to implement effective geography curricula, and inadequate assessment techniques. To raise rates of geographic literacy, the National Geographic Society (NGS) created the State Giant Traveling Maps (SGTM) to actively engage students in a geography education experience that simultaneously promotes positive attitudes towards geography while strengthening student map skills. The SGTMs incorporate a …

Measuring Contact With Transgender Individuals: An Evaluation Of Factors Associated With Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Oak Reed Jan 2018

Measuring Contact With Transgender Individuals: An Evaluation Of Factors Associated With Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Oak Reed

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Objectives: Research has suggested that transgender individuals experience high degrees of prejudice and discrimination (e.g., Grant et al., 2010; James et al., 2016). These attitudes affect transgender individuals in multiple domains, such as employment, education, healthcare, housing, public accommodations, and personal relationships (James et al., 2016). Importantly, contact as an intervention strategy has been shown to reduce anti-transgender prejudice quickly and effectively, especially when compared to other prejudice reduction methods (Walch et al., 2012; Case & Stewart, 2013; Tompkins, Sheilds, Hillman, & White, 2015). The aim of the current study was to explore how different types of contact (e.g., …

“Statistics? Forget Those Old Ladies!!” Exploring The Nonsense Of Mathematics Education, Gustavo Bruno Jan 2018

“Statistics? Forget Those Old Ladies!!” Exploring The Nonsense Of Mathematics Education, Gustavo Bruno

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The objective of this chapter is to develop a reflection on mathematics education (ME) from a socio-political perspective, through the exploration of a parody of ME using episodes from a Mexican sitcom. Different vignettes from the sitcom, consisting of absurd, nonsensical dialogues and situations of a fictional mathematics classroom, will be described, analyzed and used as illustrations of socio-political issues previously explored in ME research (MER). These illustrations allow for a reflection on the public perception of ME as a social practice. Elements from Deleuze’s The Logic of Sense will be used to analyze the scenes. One of the conclusions …

The Effect Of Academic Advisor Type On Undergraduate Student Retention, Brian Patrick French Jan 2018

The Effect Of Academic Advisor Type On Undergraduate Student Retention, Brian Patrick French

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study was designed to examine the effect of academic advisor type on retention of first-year, full-time, four-year degree-seeking students at a mid-size research university in the western U.S., while controlling for several predictor variables identified in contemporary and seminal literature as having a potential impact on student retention. Predictor variables are: socioeconomic status, first generation in family to attend college, high school grade point average, first semester grade point average, and enrollment in developmental coursework.

In the study, a binary logistic regression model was employed to determine whether academic advisor type had a statistically significant effect on the probability …

The Effect Of Parental Involvement On Student-Athlete Academic Performance, Academic Self- Efficacy, Functional Independence, And Achievement Of Adulthood Criteria, Grace Harris Gardner Jan 2018

The Effect Of Parental Involvement On Student-Athlete Academic Performance, Academic Self- Efficacy, Functional Independence, And Achievement Of Adulthood Criteria, Grace Harris Gardner

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Parental involvement in student- athletes’ lives is ubiquitous and important. Despite efforts of many to determine the best means for student-athletes to succeed academically, little is known about the relationship between levels of parent involvement and an athlete’s ability to succeed academically. Having an involved, but not over-involved, parenting relationship is key to having their children develop the necessary academic skills to be ready for the realm of collegiate athletics.

The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative analyses of NCAA Division I student-athletes in the Big Sky Conference was to examine the relationship (if any) among parental involvement, academic performance, academic …

Mismatched Identities: Experiencing White Womanhood And White Motherhood As An Exotic Dancer, Phoenicia S. Sweeney-Summers Jan 2018

Mismatched Identities: Experiencing White Womanhood And White Motherhood As An Exotic Dancer, Phoenicia S. Sweeney-Summers

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this paper I examine the work of exotic dancers in the Rocky Mountain West, focusing on their identities, identity conflict, identity threat, and overcompensation. In over twelve hours of recorded interviews, I asked ten exotic dancers working in Montana about their work, families, and communities as well as their perceptions of themselves and their work. I found that this marginalized group that resides in places that have rural characteristics, often face identity threat because their identities are known within their communities. The identity threat arises as a result of expectations and stereotypes of dancers, and in order to deal …

Reproduction Of Space In The Mountains Of Morocco: A Case Study In The Western Rif, Ismail Medkouri Jan 2018

Reproduction Of Space In The Mountains Of Morocco: A Case Study In The Western Rif, Ismail Medkouri

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The environmental history of the mountains in Morocco was written under the French colonial administration; and its revision upon independence was biased toward an Arabist perspective. These historical narratives significantly influence the study of contemporary spatial phenomena, typically by undermining the validity of the vernacular mode of production of space. This study (1) reviews key myths pertaining to the spatial history and transformation in mountainous areas in Morocco; and (2) analyzes the contemporary mountain settlement of Ain Mediouna, Province of Taounate in light of a revised environmental narrative. Methods include the following: (1) historical document analysis; and (2) morphogenetic analysis …

Gramsci’S Contradictions In Mathematics Education Researcher Positionality, Alyse Schneider Jan 2018

Gramsci’S Contradictions In Mathematics Education Researcher Positionality, Alyse Schneider

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper considers ways in which our positionality as mathematics education research (MER) scholars leads to contradictions between our theory and practice in relation to equity. I draw from Gramsci’s theorizing about traditional intellectuals and hegemony to ground the relationships between MER scholars, teachers and students in an understanding of U.S. class relations and the function of the State in mediating them. Constraints and contradictions in achieving equity are related to broader roles of education reform in maintaining the State as well as local antagonisms between MER scholars, teachers and students. For Gramsci, consent to class relations is secured in …
