The Impact Of High School Principal's Technology Leadership On The Sustainability Of Corporate Sponsored Information Communication Technology Curriculum, Bruce Ryan Gottwig

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The proliferation of information communication technology (ICT) has placed educational institutions in the forefront in educating and training students as skilled consumers, engineers, and technicians of this widely used technology. Corporations that develop and use ICT are continually building a skilled workforce; however, because of the growth and ultimately the need for a strong, skilled workforce they are reaching out to educational institutions to help bridge the gap in building this need. Corporations such as Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe, VMware, and others developed curricular programs that offer both K - 12 and higher education a means to educate and …

Estimation And Modeling Of Forest Attributes Across Large Spatial Scales Using Biomebgc, High-Resolution Imagery, Lidar Data, And Inventory Data, Jordan Seth Golinkoff Jan 2013

Estimation And Modeling Of Forest Attributes Across Large Spatial Scales Using Biomebgc, High-Resolution Imagery, Lidar Data, And Inventory Data, Jordan Seth Golinkoff

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The accurate estimation of forest attributes at many different spatial scales is a critical problem. Forest landowners may be interested in estimating timber volume, forest biomass, and forest structure to determine their forest's condition and value. Counties and states may be interested to learn about their forests to develop sustainable management plans and policies related to forests, wildlife, and climate change. Countries and consortiums of countries need information about their forests to set global and national targets to deal with issues of climate change and deforestation as well as to set national targets and understand the state of their forest …

Peripherally-Multiplicative Spectral Preservers Between Function Algebras, Jeffrey Verlyn Johnson Jan 2013

Peripherally-Multiplicative Spectral Preservers Between Function Algebras, Jeffrey Verlyn Johnson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

General sufficient conditions are established for maps between function algebras to be composition or weighted composition operators, which extend previous results regarding spectral conditions for maps between uniform algebras. Let X and Y be a locally compact Hausdorff spaces, where A \subset C(X) and B \subset C(Y) are function algebras, not necessarily with unit. Also let \partial A be the Shilov boundary of A, \delta A the Choquet boundary of A, and p(A) the set of p-points of A. A map T \colon A \to B is called weakly peripherally-multiplicative if the peripheral spectra of fg and TfTg have non-empty …

Prioritizing The Upper Clark Fork River Tributaries For Instream Flow Restoration, Catherine B. Berg Jan 2013

Prioritizing The Upper Clark Fork River Tributaries For Instream Flow Restoration, Catherine B. Berg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Off stream uses of water in the west have left many rivers and streams depleted, including the Upper Clark Fork River and its tributaries. As drought conditions persist or worsen, this issue will become more critical. Public-private partnerships, like the Upper Clark Fork Steering Committee, have formed to monitor the flow of our rivers. In order to assist the Steering Committee and river advocacy groups working within the Upper Clark Fork River Basin, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the studies on existing flows and target flows in the upper river, synthesizes past priorities for stream restoration, and provides …

Developmental Stress In Birds: Phenotypic And Fitness, Ondi L. Crino Jan 2013

Developmental Stress In Birds: Phenotypic And Fitness, Ondi L. Crino

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The environment animals experience during development can have important effects on phenotype, performance, and fitness across multiple life-history stages. Environmental cues experienced during development can provide information to animals about the environment they will soon inhabit and promote phenotypic changes which affect fitness. Increasing evidence suggests that physiological stress may be one such cue that conveys environmental information to developing animals. Here, I explore the short- and long-term consequences of developmental stress in captive and free-living birds. In chapter one, I explore the effects of developmental stress on body size and physiological stress responses across life-history stages in zebra finches …

Diagnosis Threat In Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Renee Madathil Jan 2013

Diagnosis Threat In Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Renee Madathil

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurological condition currently defined by the American Psychological Association as "a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity" (APA, 2000, p. 85). Currently, there is no DSM-IV diagnosis for ADHD in adults, although some researchers estimate that approximately 50-80% of childhood cases of ADHD carry on into adolescence and adulthood (Barkley, Fischer, Smallish, & Fletcher, 2002). Obtaining an accurate estimation is prevented by several factors, including a lack of an objective diagnostic test for ADHD (Stefanatos & Baron, 2007). One construct that has not been well studied in ADHD populations is the effect of negative …

4-Isoxazolyl-1,4-Dihydropyrirines Bind The Multidrug-Resistance Transporter, Scott Steiger Jan 2013

4-Isoxazolyl-1,4-Dihydropyrirines Bind The Multidrug-Resistance Transporter, Scott Steiger

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The development of multidrug resistance in tumor cells has been recognized as a major obstacle to successful cancer treatment. Tumor cells in vitro and in vivo can develop multidrug resistance (MDR) to the lethal effects of a variety of cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancerous tumor cells. The over expression of multiple drug resistance gene 1 has been correlated with the expression of multi drug resistance protein 1(MDR1, also known as P-glycoprotein or P-gp). MDR1's role in altering uptake, distribution and bioavailability is considered a significant factor when examining drugs for clinical administration, and represents a viable drug target for …

Assessing Changes In Connectivity And Abundance Through Time For Fisher In The Southern Sierra Nevada, Jody Marlene Tucker Jan 2013

Assessing Changes In Connectivity And Abundance Through Time For Fisher In The Southern Sierra Nevada, Jody Marlene Tucker

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Small populations are at increased risk of extinction due to their vulnerability to stochastic events. The population of fisher (Pekania pennanti, formerly Martes pennanti) in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California is small and completely genetically isolated. My dissertation research investigates the timing and cause of this population's isolation, the degree of genetic subdivision within the population, the landscape features shaping gene flow, and the detection of population declines. I detected a 90% decline in effective population size and dated the time of decline to over a thousand years ago. Analyzing historical and contemporary genetic samples, I also found …

Characterizing Crown Struture Of Three Interior Northwest Conifer Species Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning, Jena Ferrarese Jan 2013

Characterizing Crown Struture Of Three Interior Northwest Conifer Species Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning, Jena Ferrarese

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Emerging interests in wildland fire behavior and risk, bioenergy utilization, carbon sequestration, and wildlife conservation increasingly rely on accurate assessments of the amount and location of biomass within the dominant plants on the landscape, often at finer scales than traditional methods have provided. At the tree scale, current studies often distribute biomass uniformly through simple volumes (e.g., cones and cylinders). However, biomass is heterogeneous at a variety of scales from needle clusters to groups of trees. This thesis presents techniques for using terrestrial laser scanning data to define crown profiles and describe within-crown heterogeneity in Pseudotusga menziesii, Pinus ponderosa, and …

Novel Ribosome Biogenesis In The Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, Melissa Lynn Hargreaves Jan 2013

Novel Ribosome Biogenesis In The Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, Melissa Lynn Hargreaves

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Here we demonstrate the first characterization of an RNase III enzyme from a spirochete and its role in processing rRNA transcripts from the unusual rRNA gene operons of Borrelia burgdorferi. In most bacteria, the three rRNA transcripts (16S, 23S, and 5S rRNAs) that form the ribosome are produced as a single transcript from an operon with minimal spacing between genes. In the B. burgdorferi genome, however, a single 16S rRNA gene is encoded more than 3 kb from the bicistronic 23S-5S rRNA operons. The 23S-5S operons are tandemly duplicated, yielding an uneven number of rRNA genes, a feature unique to …

Implementation Of A Vertically Integrated Ice Sheet Momentum Balance Model, Joshua Charles Campbell Jan 2013

Implementation Of A Vertically Integrated Ice Sheet Momentum Balance Model, Joshua Charles Campbell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A new high-fidelity ice sheet momentum balance model meant for inclusion in the Glimmer community ice-sheet model is presented. As a component of the Community Earth Systems Model the newly developed momentum balance will directly benefit from ice/ocean and ice/atmosphere coupling efforts occurring elsewhere. The objectives of this thesis are to develop a model which converges quickly (quadratic convergence rates) for non-Newtonian Stokes flow approximations, and to provide a clear and low-level discussion of its derivation, variation and discretization. The model utilizes the Finite Element Method to discretize variational forms of the first variation arising from the Galerkin method and …

The Development Of The First Legend For Geomorphologic Mapping Of High Mountain Environments In The United Sates, Mitchell Lee Fyock Jan 2013

The Development Of The First Legend For Geomorphologic Mapping Of High Mountain Environments In The United Sates, Mitchell Lee Fyock

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Geomorphological mapping is the attempt to depict the physical setting of the surface of the earth by mapping the landforms present and the processes responsible for their appearance, and is method that is practiced worldwide. Currently, there is no universally accepted legend for mapping the geomorphological features of all environments, though there have been several attempts made to develop such a legend. Instead, many different European nations have developed their own geomorphologic mapping legends for mapping the landscapes that exist within their national boundaries. In addition, certain countries have even developed highly specific geomorphologic mapping legends for specific geomorphologic environments. …

Variational Methods In Ice Sheet Modelling, Douglas John Brinkerhoff Jan 2013

Variational Methods In Ice Sheet Modelling, Douglas John Brinkerhoff

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A complete simulation of flowing ice requires knowledge of both the fundamental physical principles that govern the stress and energy balances and a framework for assimilating data into a model to help estimate unknown parameters. Modelling ice is complex, due to the large spatial extent of ice sheets, the multiple scales at which relevant physics operate, and the coupling between heat, stress, and ice rheology. As such, it is usually necessary to make approximations to the equations governing ice flow. At the same time, it is important to have an understanding of the specific assumptions that lead to these approximations. …

Aluminum In Silica Phases Formed In Hot Springs, Nancy W. Hinman, J. Michelle Kotler Jan 2013

Aluminum In Silica Phases Formed In Hot Springs, Nancy W. Hinman, J. Michelle Kotler

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Sinters are difficult to characterize with traditional methods and are often described by their chemical composition alone. Yet information about the depositional environment and possible diagenetic processes is available in atomic structure. This study probes the atomic structure of siliceous sinters from two geothermal areas using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques. Specifically, this study demonstrated that Al is present in tetrahedral coordination with or without octahedral coordination in geyserites from Yellowstone National Park, WY, USA and Geyser Valley, Kamchatka, Russia.

Decision Making In Forest Road Planning Considering Both Skidding And Road Costs: A Case Study In The Hyrcanian Forest In Iran, M. Jourgholami, E. Abdi, Woodam Chung Jan 2013

Decision Making In Forest Road Planning Considering Both Skidding And Road Costs: A Case Study In The Hyrcanian Forest In Iran, M. Jourgholami, E. Abdi, Woodam Chung

Forest Management Faculty Publications

Hyrcanian forest is the only forest designated for commercial timber production in Iran. Ground-based skidding is the most common extraction system used in the forest, though large parts of the forest are still inaccessible due to the low road density (1-2 m ha-1). To facilitate timber harvesting in the forest, it has been proposed to increase the road density up to 20 m ha-1. The aim of this study was to incorporate the estimated skidding costs through a time study into an existing transportation planning tool, NETWORK 2000, to help decision making on forest road building. …

Compressional And Em Wave Velocity Anisotropy In A Temperate Glacier Due To Basal Crevasses, And Implications For Water Content Estimation, John Bradford, Joshua Nichols, Joel T. Harper, Toby W. Meierbachtol Jan 2013

Compressional And Em Wave Velocity Anisotropy In A Temperate Glacier Due To Basal Crevasses, And Implications For Water Content Estimation, John Bradford, Joshua Nichols, Joel T. Harper, Toby W. Meierbachtol

Geosciences Faculty Publications

We have conducted a series of experiments designed to investigate elastic and electromagnetic (EM) velocity anisotropy associated with a preferentially aligned fracture system on a temperate valley glacier in south-central Alaska, USA. Measurements include a three-dimensional compressional wave (P-wave) seismic reflection survey conducted over a 300 m x 300 m survey patch, with uniform source grid and static checkerboard receiver pattern. Additionally, we acquired a multiazimuth, multi-offset, polarimetric groundpenetrating radar (GPR) reflection experiment in a wagon-wheel geometry with 94 degrees of azimuthal coverage. Results show azimuthal variation in the P-wave normal-moveout velocity of less than 3% (3765 and 3630 ms …

Water-Rock Interaction And Life, Nancy W. Hinman Jan 2013

Water-Rock Interaction And Life, Nancy W. Hinman

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Water-rock interactions play a critical role in the origin, existence, and prospects of life. Minerals are sources of energy and nutrients. Life uses aqueous chemical gradients to access and use minerals. Chemical disequilibrium, therefore, represents one type of biotic signature. Life also controls other types of disequilibrium, including isotopic disequilibrium and morphology. Water is a fundamental contributor to all of these biosignatures, acting as a medium for mass transfer and a reservoir for components. Distinguishing biosignatures from abiotic signatures challenges instrumental capabilities. Finally, the ubiquity and heterogenous distribution of life on Earth challenges the ability to interpret different types of …

Evaluation Of A New Method For Large-Scale And Gene-Targeted Next Generation Dna Sequencing In Nonmodel Species, Ted Cosart Jan 2013

Evaluation Of A New Method For Large-Scale And Gene-Targeted Next Generation Dna Sequencing In Nonmodel Species, Ted Cosart

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The efficient method called exon capture provides for sequencing genes genome-wide, targeting candidate genes, and sampling specific exons within genes. Although developed for model species with available whole genome sequences, the method can capture exons in nonmodel species using the genomic resources of a related model species. How close the relatives must be for effective exon capture is not known. The work herein demonstrates cross-taxa capture in ungulates, using the domestic cow genome as a reference. It also describes a computer program designed for collecting exon sequences for exon capture, allowing users to set per-gene and overall base pair (bp) …

Two-Step Arithmetic Word Problems, Enrique Castro-Martínez, Antonio Frías-Zorilla Jan 2013

Two-Step Arithmetic Word Problems, Enrique Castro-Martínez, Antonio Frías-Zorilla

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This study uses the perspective of schemes to analyze characteristics of arithmetic word problems that can influence the process of translation from the verbal statement to an arithmetical representation. One characteristic that we have detected in the two-step word problems is the presence of one or two connections (nodes) in schemes that represent them, and this paper explores whether the number of nodes affects the activation of the associated schemas. With students from the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school (11 and 12 years of age), we analyze the written productions and would stress that the number of connections …

Trajectory Of A Problem: A Study In Teacher Training, Alain Kuzniak, Bernard Parzysz, Laurent Vivier Jan 2013

Trajectory Of A Problem: A Study In Teacher Training, Alain Kuzniak, Bernard Parzysz, Laurent Vivier

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Problems are frequently used in mathematics to introduce and convey new notions and skills. Hence, teachers transform and adjust those problems to their students' level. The present study focuses on this transformation process on the particular case of a geometric problem posed by two teacher educators in one French Institute for Teacher Training. The whole process is described as a trajectory of the problem through various institutions from training center to secondary school and back. Before presenting the notion of trajectory of the problem, some elements about a general theoretical frame which refers to didactics of mathematics are presented.

Primary School Teacher’S Noticing Of Students’ Mathematical Thinking In Problem Solving, Ceneida Fernández, Salvador Llinares, Julia Valls Jan 2013

Primary School Teacher’S Noticing Of Students’ Mathematical Thinking In Problem Solving, Ceneida Fernández, Salvador Llinares, Julia Valls

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Professional noticing of students’ mathematical thinking in problem solving involves the identification of noteworthy mathematical ideas of students’ mathematical thinking and its interpretation to make decisions in the teaching of mathematics. The goal of this study is to begin to characterize pre-service primary school teachers’ noticing of students’ mathematical thinking when students solve tasks that involve proportional and non-proportional reasoning. From the analysis of how pre-service primary school teachers notice students’ mathematical thinking, we have identified an initial framework with four levels of development. This framework indicates a possible trajectory in the development of primary teachers’ professional noticing.
