A Functional Analysis Of 2012 U.S. Presidential Primary Debates, Mark Glantz, William L. Benoit, David Airne Apr 2013

A Functional Analysis Of 2012 U.S. Presidential Primary Debates, Mark Glantz, William L. Benoit, David Airne

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examines the Republican primary debates from the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign. With a weak economy, numerous Republicans vied to challenge President Barack Obama who was completing his first term in office. Of course, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney eventually seized the Republican nomination. This investigation employs content analysis and applies Functional Theory to the primary campaign debate messages. Acclaims were more common than attacks, which in turn occurred more frequently than defenses; and policy was discussed more often than character. Findings from the 2012 debates are compared with results from analysis of presidential primary debates in earlier campaigns.

Ten ice-sheet models are used to study sensitivity of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to prescribed changes of surface mass balance, sub-ice-shelf melting and basal sliding. Results exhibit a large range in projected contributions to sea-level change. In most cases, the ice volume above flotation lost is linearly dependent on the strength of the forcing. Combinations of forcings can be closely approximated by linearly summing the contributions from single forcing experiments, suggesting that nonlinear feedbacks are modest. Our models indicate that Greenland is more sensitive than Antarctica to likely atmospheric changes in temperature and precipitation, while Antarctica is more …

Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership V. Salazar, Josh Nichols Mar 2013

Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership V. Salazar, Josh Nichols

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership v. Salazar, the United States District Court of Appeals, District of Columbia, upheld a district court decision denying environmental groups‟ claims that the Bureau of Land Management‟s Record of Decision, accompanying environmental impact statement, and subsequent drilling permits violated the National Environmental Policy Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, and the Administrative Procedure Act. The Court concluded that appellants failed to show any of the Bureau of Land Management‟s decisions were “arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion, or otherwise not in accordance with law.” The decision was a victory for groups pursuing development …

Improved understanding of Greenland ice sheet hydrology is critically important for assessing its impact on current and future ice sheet dynamics and global sea level rise. This has motivated the collection and integration of in situ observations, model development, and remote sensing efforts to quantify meltwater production, as well as its phase changes, transport, and export. Particularly urgent is a better understanding of albedo feedbacks leading to enhanced surface melt, potential positive feedbacks between ice sheet hydrology and dynamics, and meltwater retention in firn. These processes are not isolated, but must be understood as part of a continuum of processes …

Dynamically Downscaled Winter Precipitation Over Complex Terrain Of The Central Rockies Of Western Montana, Usa, Nicholas Loren Silverman, Marco P. Maneta, S.-H. Chen, Joel T. Harper Jan 2013

Dynamically Downscaled Winter Precipitation Over Complex Terrain Of The Central Rockies Of Western Montana, Usa, Nicholas Loren Silverman, Marco P. Maneta, S.-H. Chen, Joel T. Harper

Geosciences Faculty Publications

We evaluate the results of dynamically downscaled winter precipitation over Western Montana using the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model through comparison with estimates from the observationally based parameter-elevation regressions on independent slopes model (PRISM). Seven years (six winters) from 2000 to 2006 are simulated at 4 km resolution to assess the similarities and differences between the two models as well as the implications for hydrologic modeling. Inherent biases in both approaches are apparent, highlighting the difficulty in climate model validation. Results show general agreement between the two models in the spatial distribution of winter precipitation. A principal component analysis …

Proof And Problem Solving At University Level, Annie Selden, John Selden Jan 2013

Proof And Problem Solving At University Level, Annie Selden, John Selden

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper will be concerned with undergraduate and graduate students’ problem solving as they encounter it in attempting to prove theorems, mainly to satisfy their professors in their courses, but also as they conduct original research for theses and dissertations. We take Schoenfeld’s (1985) view of problem, namely, a mathematical task is a problem for an individual if that person does not already know a method of solution for that task. Thus, a given task may be a problem for one individual, who does not already know a solution method for that task, or it may be an exercise for …

A Proposal For A Problem-Driven Mathematics Curriculum Framework, Judith S. Zawojewski, Marta T. Magiera, Richard Lesh Jan 2013

A Proposal For A Problem-Driven Mathematics Curriculum Framework, Judith S. Zawojewski, Marta T. Magiera, Richard Lesh

The Mathematics Enthusiast

A framework for a problem-driven mathematics curriculum is proposed, grounded in the assumption that students learn mathematics while engaged in complex problem-solving activity. The framework is envisioned as a dynamic technologicallydriven multi-dimensional representation that can highlight the nature of the curriculum (e.g., revealing the relationship among modeling, conceptual, and procedural knowledge), can be used for programmatic, classroom and individual assessment, and can be easily revised to reflect ongoing changes in disciplinary knowledge development and important applications of mathematics. The discussion prompts ideas and questions for future development of the envisioned software needed to enact such a framework.

Prospective Teachers’ Interactive Visualization And Affect In Mathematical Problem-Solving, Inés Mª Gómez-Chacón Jan 2013

Prospective Teachers’ Interactive Visualization And Affect In Mathematical Problem-Solving, Inés Mª Gómez-Chacón

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Research on technology-assisted teaching and learning has identified several families of factors that contribute to the effective integration of such tools. Focusing on one such family, affective factors, this article reports on a qualitative study of 30 prospective secondary school mathematics teachers designed to acquire insight into the affect associated with the visualization of geometric loci using GeoGebra. Affect as a representational system was the approach adopted to gain insight into how the use of dynamic geometry applications impacted students’ affective pathways. The data suggests that affect is related to motivation through goals and self-concept. Basic instrumental knowledge and the …

Cognition And Affect In Mathematics Problem Solving With Prospective Teachers, Lorenzo J. Blanco, Eloisa Guerrero Barona, Ann Caballero Carrasco Jan 2013

Cognition And Affect In Mathematics Problem Solving With Prospective Teachers, Lorenzo J. Blanco, Eloisa Guerrero Barona, Ann Caballero Carrasco

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Recent studies relating the affective domain with the teaching and learning of mathematics, and more specifically with mathematics problem solving, have focused on teacher education. The authors of these studies have been ever more insistently pointing to the need to design educational programs that take an integrated cognitive and affective approach to mathematics education. Given this context, we have designed and implemented a program of intervention on mathematics problem solving for prospective primary teachers. We here describe some results of that program.

Influences Of Lithology On Water Quality: A Study Of The Ngam And Mou Watersheds In West Cameroon (Central Africa), E. Kemayou Tchamako, Rv Tsinkou Fotsing, Jp Tchouankoue, Jr Ndam Ngoupayou, B Ngounou Ngatcha, Nancy W. Hinman Jan 2013

Influences Of Lithology On Water Quality: A Study Of The Ngam And Mou Watersheds In West Cameroon (Central Africa), E. Kemayou Tchamako, Rv Tsinkou Fotsing, Jp Tchouankoue, Jr Ndam Ngoupayou, B Ngounou Ngatcha, Nancy W. Hinman

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The Ngam and Mou Rivers belong to the river system of the central part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line. The Ngam River watershed comprises 51 Ma old basalts, while the Mou River watershed comprises younger, < 5 Ma pyroclastic basalts. The physico-chemical characteristics of water samples from both watersheds indicated pH between 4.2 and 8.2, and 4.2 to 7.5, and very low mineralization between 11 and 246 μS/cm and 45 to 165 μS/cm, respectively, for the Ngam River and the Mou River. Chemical data showed that waters from old, highly weathered plateau basalts (Ngam River watershed) were dominated by calcium and sodium (signatures of feldpars from syenites and orthogneisses), while waters in the Mou River watershed were dominated by magnesium (signature of olivines and pyroxenes from basalts). Mineralizations in the two watersheds are thus primarily controlled by lithology rather than anthropic activities. These results are promising for identifying potential potable water resources in these areas.

Kinetic Models Reveal The In Vivo Mechanisms Of Mutagenesis In Microbes And Man, Barbara E. Wright, Karen H. Schmidt, Michael F. Minnick Jan 2013

Kinetic Models Reveal The In Vivo Mechanisms Of Mutagenesis In Microbes And Man, Barbara E. Wright, Karen H. Schmidt, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

This review summarizes the evidence indicating that mutagenic mechanisms in vivo are essentially the same in all living cells. Unique metabolic reactions to a particular environmental stress apparently target specific genes for increased rates of transcription and mutation, resulting in higher mutation rates for those genes most likely to solve the problem. Kinetic models which have demonstrated predictive value are described and are shown to simulate mutagenesis in vivo in Escherichia coli, the p53 tumor suppressor gene, and somatic hypermutation. In all three models, direct correlations are seen between mutation frequencies and transcription rates. G and C nucleosides in single-stranded …

Role Of Resonance-Enhanced Multiphoton Excitation In High-Harmonic Generation Of N-2: A Time-Dependent Density-Functional-Theory Study, Xi Chu, Gerrit C. Groenenboom Jan 2013

Role Of Resonance-Enhanced Multiphoton Excitation In High-Harmonic Generation Of N-2: A Time-Dependent Density-Functional-Theory Study, Xi Chu, Gerrit C. Groenenboom

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A minimum at similar to 39 eV is observed in the high-harmonic-generation spectra of N-2 for several laser intensities and frequencies. This minimum appears to be invariant for different molecular orientations. We reproduce this minimum for a set of laser parameters and orientations in time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations, which also render orientation-dependent maxima at 23-26 eV. Photon energies of these maxima overlap with ionization potentials of excited states observed in photoelectron spectra. Time profile analysis shows that these maxima are caused by resonance-enhanced multiphoton excitation. We propose a four-step mechanism, in which an additional excitation step is added to the well-accepted …

An extensive program of experiments focused on biomass burning emissions began with a laboratory phase in which vegetative fuels commonly consumed in prescribed fires were collected in the southeastern and southwestern US and burned in a series of 71 fires at the US Forest Service Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. The particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions were measured by gravimetric filter sampling with subsequent analysis for elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and 38 elements. The trace gas emissions were measured by an open-path Fourier transform infrared (OP-FTIR) spectrometer, proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTRMS), proton-transfer ion-trap mass spectrometry (PIT-MS), negative-ion proton-transfer …

In October-November 2011 we measured trace gas emission factors from seven prescribed fires in South Carolina (SC), US, using two Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) systems and whole air sampling (WAS) into canisters followed by gas-chromatographic analysis. A total of 97 trace gas species were quantified from both airborne and ground-based sampling platforms, making this one of the most detailed field studies of fire emissions to date. The measurements include the first emission factors for a suite of monoterpenes produced by heating vegetative fuels during field fires. The first quantitative FTIR observations of limonene in smoke are reported along with …

Young Children Investigating Advanced Mathematical Concepts With Haptic Technologies: Future Design Perspectives, Stephen Hegedus Jan 2013

Young Children Investigating Advanced Mathematical Concepts With Haptic Technologies: Future Design Perspectives, Stephen Hegedus

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this chapter, we focus on how new technologies can be used with young children to investigate mathematical ideas and concepts that would normally be introduced at a later age. In particular, we focus on haptic technologies that allow learners to touch and feel objects through force feedback in addition to visual images on a screen. The main purpose of this paper is to describe how these technologies can be used to enable young learners to construct meaning about geometric shapes and surfaces as well as attributes of particular mathematical constructions in multiple dimensions (particularly 2D and 3D for purposes …

Problem Solving In The Primary School (K-2), Richard Lesh, Lyn English, Chanda Riggs, Serife Sevis

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article focuses on problem solving activities in a first grade classroom in a typical small community and school in Indiana. But, the teacher and the activities in this class were not at all typical of what goes on in most comparable classrooms; and, the issues that will be addressed are relevant and important for students from kindergarten through college. Can children really solve problems that involve concepts (or skills) that they have not yet been taught? Can children really create important mathematical concepts on their own – without a lot of guidance from teachers? What is the relationship between …

Does Attainment Of Piaget's Formal Operational Level Of Cognitive Development Predict Student Understanding Of Scientific Models?, Richard Dennis Lahti Jan 2013

Does Attainment Of Piaget's Formal Operational Level Of Cognitive Development Predict Student Understanding Of Scientific Models?, Richard Dennis Lahti

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Knowledge of scientific models and their uses is a concept that has become a key benchmark in many of the science standards of the past 30 years, including the proposed Next Generation Science Standards. Knowledge of models is linked to other important nature of science concepts such as theory change which are also rising in prominence in newer standards. Effective methods of instruction will need to be developed to enable students to achieve these standards. The literature reveals an inconsistent history of success with modeling education. These same studies point to a possible cognitive development component which might explain why …
