Clockface Polygons And The Collective Joy Of Making Mathematics Together, Corey Brady, Rachel Blough, Kaitlyn Hollister, Peter Tyree Jordan, Samantha Marshall, Isaac Nichols, Lauren Vogelstein, Panchompoo Fai Wisittanawat

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The social and embodied nature at the heart of all knowing, doing, and learning contrasts with the images that pervade our cultural imagination of mathematical work as a solitary, cognitive activity. This article describes a playful experiment by the author group to do collective mathematics, in an extended effort to construct alternative images, instincts, and practices for ourselves. We present a pair of episodes of mathematical exploration that come from our work together and that we have seen as an early success, intimating features of a stabilized collective mathematics that we hope to continue pursuing. Coming from a single investigation …

A Scientometric Look At Mathematics Education From Scopus Database, Miguel Cruz Ramirez, Rafael Armando Rodriguez Devesa Feb 2019

A Scientometric Look At Mathematics Education From Scopus Database, Miguel Cruz Ramirez, Rafael Armando Rodriguez Devesa

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present work offers a characterization of the development of mathematics education, based on scientometric indicators. The study analyzes 5633 documents registered in the Scopus database which are all related to research in mathematics education. The main results show an exponential increase on the scientific productivity, a tendency to increase collaborative work over individual work, a greater impact per index of the cited references during the last two decades, a high level of international collaboration, a certain concentration of the publications on a reduced group of investigators in some international impact journals, and the existence of 17 invisible colleagues that …

The Expected Value Of A Random Variable: Semiotic And Lexical Ambiguities, Hyung Won Kim, Tim Fukawa-Connelly Feb 2019

The Expected Value Of A Random Variable: Semiotic And Lexical Ambiguities, Hyung Won Kim, Tim Fukawa-Connelly

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In calculus-based statistics courses, the expected value of a random variable (EVORV) is discussed in relation to underlying mathematical notions. This study examines students’ understanding of the mathematical notions of EVORV in connection with its semiotic and lexical representations. It also assesses students’ computational competency revolving around EVORV. We collected qualitative data via surveys and interviews from eight students enrolled in a calculus-based university statistics course. The results suggest that while the students in general had the computational accuracy to correctly calculate EVORV, they struggled to understand the notion, and in particular to make sense of the term “random” in …

Extending Modelling Activity Diagrams As A Tool To Characterise Mathematical Modelling Processes, Lluis Albarracin, Jonas Arleback, Elisabeth Civil, Nuria Gorgorio Feb 2019

Extending Modelling Activity Diagrams As A Tool To Characterise Mathematical Modelling Processes, Lluis Albarracin, Jonas Arleback, Elisabeth Civil, Nuria Gorgorio

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, we present a qualitative study in which we analyse the videorecordings of four groups of students solving Fermi Problems. Previous studies show that Secondary School students solve this type of problems using complex problem solving processes and developing mathematical models. In order to analyse the students’ problem solving processes, so-called Modelling Activity Diagrams were used. The results of the present study demonstrate that solving Fermi problems is a complex matter, and that some of the theoretical tools used in the field of Mathematical Education fail to adequately reflect this level of complexity. In addition, Modelling Activity Diagrams …

A Mathematical Analysis Of Student-Generated Sorting Algorithms, Audrey Nasar Feb 2019

A Mathematical Analysis Of Student-Generated Sorting Algorithms, Audrey Nasar

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Sorting is a process we encounter very often in everyday life. Additionally it is a fundamental operation in computer science. Having been one of the first intensely studied problems in computer science, many different sorting algorithms have been developed and analyzed. Although algorithms are often taught as part of the computer science curriculum in the context of a programming language, the study of algorithms and algorithmic thinking, including the design, construction and analysis of algorithms, has pedagogical value in mathematics education. This paper will provide an introduction to computational complexity and efficiency, without the use of a programming language. It …

A Re-Emergent Analysis Of Early Algebraic Learning, Steven Boyce, Diana Moss Feb 2019

A Re-Emergent Analysis Of Early Algebraic Learning, Steven Boyce, Diana Moss

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, we discuss a novel approach for collaborative retrospective analysis. One researcher was directly involved in a classroom teaching experiment, adopting an emergent perspective as an interpreter-witness of classroom interactions during a four-week algebra instructional unit with sixth-grade students. The other researcher experienced and analyzed the data in reverse chronological order. We describe how this re-emergent perspective revealed aspects of students’ early algebraic reasoning.

Hatch, Vanessa Selimovic, Robert J. Yokelson, Robert Weber, Arantza E. Fernandez, Nathan M. Kreisberg, Kelley C. Barsanti, Allen H. Goldstein

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Western US wildlands experience frequent and large-scale wildfires which are predicted to increase in the future. As a result, wildfire smoke emissions are expected to play an increasing role in atmospheric chemistry while negatively impacting regional air quality and human health. Understanding the impacts of smoke on the environment is informed by identifying and quantifying the chemical compounds that are emitted during wildfires and by providing empirical relationships that describe how the amount and composition of the emissions change based upon different fire conditions and fuels. This study examined particulate organic compounds emitted from burning common western US wildland fuels …

A Brief History Of Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom Jan 2019

A Brief History Of Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

Digital objects are composed of bitstreams, sequences of 1’s and 0’s, which require specific software (and in some cases hardware) to make the content understandable to human users. Digital objects, like word processing documents, digital images, websites, e-mails, datasets and so much more, are fragile, easy to modify, and susceptible to bit rot (loss or reordering parts of the bitstream) and obsolescence. Digital preservation is a combination of policies and workflows that dictate the active management of digital objects to ensure their continued authenticity and meaningful access over time. Obsolescence is one of the unending battles that digital preservationists fight. …

Modeling Of Excitatory Amino Acid Transporters And Clearance Of Synaptic Cleft On Millisecond Time Scale, Denis M. Shchepakin, Leonid Kalachev, Michael Kavanaugh Jan 2019

Modeling Of Excitatory Amino Acid Transporters And Clearance Of Synaptic Cleft On Millisecond Time Scale, Denis M. Shchepakin, Leonid Kalachev, Michael Kavanaugh

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Excitatory Amino Acid Transporters (EAATs) operate over wide time scales in the brain. They maintain low ambient concentrations of the primary excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter glutamate, but they also seem to play a significant role in clearing glutamate from the synaptic cleft in the millisecond time-scale process of chemical communication that occurs between neurons. The detailed kinetic mechanisms underlying glutamate uptake and clearance remain incompletely understood. In this work we used a combination of methods to model EAAT kinetics and gain insight into the impact of transport on glutamate dynamics in a general sense. We derive reliable estimates of the …

America’s National Parks are rich with cultural history, flora, fauna and some of nature’s most impressive landscapes. As climate change continues to accelerate, these parks and their cultural and natural resources are being threatened. In this project, I will present a colorful, informational booklet that concentrates on 4 specific parks: Yellowstone National Park, National Park of American Samoa, Glacier Bay National Park and Mesa Verde National Park. I will focus on the archaeology and cultural significance of these parks, while also examining the ways that climate change is putting these, and other associated assets of the parks, at risk. I …

An Exploration: How Voluntourism Conservation Projects Coordinate With And Contribute To Conservation Efforts In Madre De Dios, Peru, Alejandrina R. Ocanas Jan 2019

An Exploration: How Voluntourism Conservation Projects Coordinate With And Contribute To Conservation Efforts In Madre De Dios, Peru, Alejandrina R. Ocanas

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Mirroring trends in international tourism, alternative tourism, and ecotourism, the voluntourism industry has grown, developed and diversified significantly since 2005. Scientific attention to voluntourism has grown, too, focusing mainly on participant motivations and outcomes. However, explicit research on the outcomes and impacts voluntourism projects generate for their host communities and environments is sparse. As voluntourism becomes increasingly frequent, it is critical to design and implement projects that maximize potential for positive impacts and minimize negative impacts. This study reaches toward that goal by investigating (1) the operational characteristics of voluntourism conservation projects in Madre de Dios, Peru, a global conservation …

Soil Moisture Drives Canopy Water Content Dynamics In The Western U.S., Drew S. Lyons Jan 2019

Soil Moisture Drives Canopy Water Content Dynamics In The Western U.S., Drew S. Lyons

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Drought stress is a major contributing factor to adult tree mortality and limits regeneration across the globe. Drought effects are often studied on a site level, but recent advances in remote sensing allow for observations of plant water status across broader geographic scales. The vegetation optical depth (VOD) derived from satellite sensor microwave backscatter has been shown to be sensitive to canopy water content, and can therefore provide useful information on how plant water status changes over time. We develop an index which quantifies the normalized difference between diurnal VOD retrievals (nVOD) across the western U.S. to determine where plant …

Estimates Of Forest Characteristics Derived From Remotely Sensed Imagery And Field Samples: Applicable Scales, Appropriate Study Design, And Relevance To Forest Management, John S. Hogland Jan 2019

Estimates Of Forest Characteristics Derived From Remotely Sensed Imagery And Field Samples: Applicable Scales, Appropriate Study Design, And Relevance To Forest Management, John S. Hogland

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Information and knowledge about a given forested landscape drives forest management decisions. Within forest management though, information that adequately describes various characteristics of the forested environment in the spatial detail desired to make fully informed management decisions is often limited. Key metrics such as species composition, tree basal area, and tree density are typically too expensive to collect using ground-based inventory methods alone across broad extents for forest level planning (thousands of ha) at fine spatial detail that permit use at tactical spatial scales (tens of ha). However, quantifying these metrics accurately, in spatial detail, across broad landscapes is important …

Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao Jan 2019

Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Modern studies in medicine, epidemiology, pharmacy and other fields generate high dimensional data. We developed statistical analysis methods for two types of such data: activity and microbiome data. Specifically, reliable measures of the frequency, duration and intensity of physical activity provided by wearable technology were used in the analysis of activity data. Accelerometry-derived measures of physical activity were compared with established predictors of 5-year all-cause mortality in older adults, aged between 50 and 85 years from the 2003- 2006 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, in terms of individual, relative, and combined predictive performance. A total of 33 predictors of …

Methods For Estimating Mountain Goat Occupancy And Abundance, Molly Mcdevitt Jan 2019

Methods For Estimating Mountain Goat Occupancy And Abundance, Molly Mcdevitt

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Abundance and occupancy are two parameters of central interest to the field of ecology. Furthermore, accurate (both precise and unbiased) estimates are key pieces to the puzzle of effective wildlife management decision-making. While there exist a variety of sampling techniques and statistical models for effectively estimating population parameters for frequently encountered and large mammals, methods for sampling unmarked and rare species are few and far between. The first step to acquiring usable parameter estimates is through the use of sampling theory and incorporation of probabilistic sampling designs to collect count-data and occurrence-data. Often, it is assumed that probabilistic sampling designs …

Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Nitrogen And Carbon Biogeochemistry In A Wetland-Stream Sequence, Patrick E. Hurley Jan 2019

Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Nitrogen And Carbon Biogeochemistry In A Wetland-Stream Sequence, Patrick E. Hurley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studies of aquatic ecosystems often segregate streams from the influential ponds, lakes, and wetland zones that act as important transitions between terrestrial and fluvial systems. Across the aquatic landscape, these zones interact to form linked ecosystems that function as discrete nutrient processing domains, shifting biogeochemical signals due to spatial and temporal variability in hydrologic and biologic controls. Using a mass-balance approach, we profiled nutrient dynamics along a 23-km wetland-stream sequence over three seasons. Hydrologic, morphologic, and biologic conditions, as well as landscape attributes, were quantified to determine potential controls on biogeochemical cycling in a tributary of the Upper Clark Fork …
