Positioning Pre-Service Teacher Beliefs Along The Traditional-Reform Continuum: An Examination Of Normative Beliefs And Discursive Claims, Mary Elizabeth Riley Lloyd, Malia Howell Feb 2019

Positioning Pre-Service Teacher Beliefs Along The Traditional-Reform Continuum: An Examination Of Normative Beliefs And Discursive Claims, Mary Elizabeth Riley Lloyd, Malia Howell

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This study examined a typical sample of K-8 pre-service teachers (PTs) enrolled in typical teacher-preparation programs (TPPs) to provide insight about where on the traditionalreform continuum PTs’ beliefs are positioned. To ensure accuracy in results, a sequential explanatory design was utilized in the examination of the PTs’ normative beliefs assessed three times throughout their TPPs (using Likert items and open-ended questions), relationships between other PTs’ and in-service teachers’ (ITs’) beliefs, and alignment between normative beliefs (what PTs believed they should do) and discursive claims about their teaching (what PTs claimed to do). Results of this study – particularly related to …

Integrating Knowledge For Instruction: A Tale Of Two Teachers, David D. Barker, John K. Lannin, Matthew S. Winsor, J. Vince Kirwan Feb 2019

Integrating Knowledge For Instruction: A Tale Of Two Teachers, David D. Barker, John K. Lannin, Matthew S. Winsor, J. Vince Kirwan

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Teacher knowledge is a critical factor that influences pedagogical decisions. If we want teachers to make appropriate choices in the classroom we must know and understand the types of knowledge used during this decision-making process. To this end, we sought to understand how, and the extent to which, two 5th grade teachers drew upon and integrated their knowledge of mathematics, learners, and pedagogy while teaching. Stimulated recall interviews were analyzed to uncover the types of knowledge and interactions that occurred. Both teachers primarily used their knowledge of learners and pedagogy, with the knowledge of mathematics playing a supportive role. In …

A Mathematics Teacher's Identity Study Through Their Teaching Practices In A Postgraduate Training Course, Veronica Molfino, Cristina Ochoviet Feb 2019

A Mathematics Teacher's Identity Study Through Their Teaching Practices In A Postgraduate Training Course, Veronica Molfino, Cristina Ochoviet

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Guided by the question “Which aspects could affect mathematics teachers’ identity, especially in the context of a postgraduate course that includes teaching practices as mathematics teacher educators?” we analyzed the transition between actual and designated mathematics teachers’ identity in a postgraduate training course. In particular, teaching practices during the course were oriented by emerging recommendations for mathematics teacher training. We concluded that the presence of an explicit intention to develop a specific practice plays a key role in the transition between actual and designated identity. In addition, the possession of methodological tools as a means for implementing renewed practices gave …
