Self-Serving Bias In Performance Goal Achievement Appraisals: Evidence From Long-Distance Runners, Moonsup Hyun, Wonsok F. Jee, Christine Wegner, Jeremy S. Jordan, James Du, Taeyeon Oh

Faculty and Student Publications

While working with a long-distance running event organizer, the authors of this study observed considerable differences between event participants’ official finish time (i.e., bib time) and their self-reported finish time in the post-event survey. Drawing on the notion of self-serving bias, we aim to explore the source of this disparity and how such psychological bias influences participants’ event experience at long-distance running events. Using evidence of 1,320 marathon runners, we demonstrated how people are more likely to be subject to a biased self-assessment contingent upon achieving their best finish time at the event. The study samples were split into record-high-achieved …

A Multitarget Approach To Evaluate The Efficacy Of Aquilaria Sinensis Flower Extract Against Metabolic Syndrome, Hee Sung Chae, Olivia Dale, Tahir Maqbool Mir, Bharathi Avula

Faculty and Student Publications

Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Spreng is known for its resinous secretion (agarwood), often secreted in defense against injuries. We investigated the effects of A. sinensis flower extract (AF) on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors alpha and gamma (PPARα and PPARγ), liver X receptor (LXR), glucose uptake, and lipid accumulation (adipogenesis). Activation of PPARα, PPARγ and LXR was determined in hepatic (HepG2) cells by reporter gene assays. Glucose uptake was determined in differentiated muscle (C2C12) cells using 2-NBDG (2-deoxy-2-[(7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl)amino]-D-glucose). Adipogenesis was determined in adipocytes (3T3-L1 cells) by Oil red O staining. At a concentration of 50 µg/mL, AF caused 12.2-fold activation of PPARα and …

Ranking The Biases: The Choice Of Otus Vs. Asvs In 16s Rrna Amplicon Data Analysis Has Stronger Effects On Diversity Measures Than Rarefaction And Otu Identity Threshold, Marlène Chiarello, Mark Mccauley, Sébastien Villéger, Colin R. Jackson

Faculty and Student Publications

Advances in the analysis of amplicon sequence datasets have introduced a methodological shift in how research teams investigate microbial biodiversity, away from sequence identity-based clustering (producing Operational Taxonomic Units, OTUs) to denoising methods (producing amplicon sequence variants, ASVs). While denoising methods have several inherent properties that make them desirable compared to clustering-based methods, questions remain as to the influence that these pipelines have on the ecological patterns being assessed, especially when compared to other methodological choices made when processing data (e.g. rarefaction) and computing diversity indices. We compared the respective influences of two widely used methods, namely DADA2 (a denoising …

Does The Contraction History Of The Muscle Dictate Changes In Strength Following Resistance Training?, Zachary William Bell Jan 2022

Does The Contraction History Of The Muscle Dictate Changes In Strength Following Resistance Training?, Zachary William Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within-subject training models, whereby researchers apply an exercise condition to one limb, and a separate exercise condition to the opposing limb, have become routine amongst the exercise literature. However, no study has directly tested whether exercising one limb with a high-load condition will influence strength adaptations within the opposing limb, even when the opposite limb is training. Furthermore, muscle post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is representing local level changes, however, more research is warranted to understand if this can be differentially impacted with different types (e.g. low load vs. high load) of resistance training. The purpose of this study was to …

Resilience Capacity Of School Meal Programs In Southeastern U.S. School Districts During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Findings From Mississippi, Louisiana, And West Virginia, Kritika Gupta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi (MS), Louisiana (LA), and West Virginia (WV) have some of the nation’s highest rates of poverty and health disparities, reflected in high rates of food insecurity. Many of the school districts in these states have greater than 40% of students qualifying for free meals and, under community eligibility, can provide meals free to all children. School meals play an important role in addressing food insecurity in the U.S. and those were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The ability of social systems (schools) to continue operations during adverse circumstances (pandemic) to ensure the sustained outcome of interest (food security) …

Measuring Impact Of New Teacher Mentoring Programs Through Teacher Sense Of Efficacy Scale, Ezzard Beane Jan 2022

Measuring Impact Of New Teacher Mentoring Programs Through Teacher Sense Of Efficacy Scale, Ezzard Beane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The education gap between economically advantaged and economically disadvantaged students in the United States is accountable for most of the education gap in the United States and other technologically advanced countries. Unfortunately, the students who require the most academic support and quality instruction often receive instruction from the least qualified. The gap in effective instruction for the economically disadvantaged is related to the quality of instruction which is often facilitated by the least effective and least qualified teachers. The quality of teachers is directly related to the high teacher attrition rates of teachers serving economically disadvantaged students. Maximizing strategies to …

Development And Characterization Of Different Dosage Forms Utilizing Hot-Melt Extrusion Technique, Abdulmajeed Althobaiti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hot melt extrusion (HME) is a promising technique for developing different dosage forms and improving products already on the market. Numerous studies have been published utilizing HME due to its advantages over conventional techniques. It is solvent-free, has few processing steps, continuous processing, and low cost. Furthermore, HME has the flexibility to be coupled with Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) to develop complex dosage forms for patient-focused drug delivery. The first objective of this research work was to design and develop different dosage forms (capsule-in-capsule, and three-dimensional-printed tablet) of nifedipine/indomethacin fixed-dose combination (FDC) utilizing hot melt extrusion (HME) with or without …

Perceived Value Of A Vr (Virtual Reality) Tourism Experience: A Scale Development, Fernando Arroyo Lopez Jan 2022

Perceived Value Of A Vr (Virtual Reality) Tourism Experience: A Scale Development, Fernando Arroyo Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Firms are skeptical about what values travelers anticipate obtaining from a Virtual Reality (VR) experience in tourism, and the valuation of trade-offs they are willing to make. This scale development aimed to fill this gap in the literature by creating a scale that can capture the perceived value derived from a VR experience in tourism. This research study adhered to well-established, mainstream psychometric scale creation and validation methods as demonstrated by several authors. This study provides a key step in developing measurement theory related to the perceived value derived from a VR experience in tourism and identifies four value dimensions: …
