The Effect Of Hydration Status On Jump Height In Track And Field Athletes, Joshua Hogg
The Effect Of Hydration Status On Jump Height In Track And Field Athletes, Joshua Hogg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The maintenance of hydration levels are often a key focus when trying to sustain athletic performance in sport. The amount of fluid intake needed to reach appropriate hydration levels varies widely from a multitude of factors. This ideal hydration level (euhydration) is characterized by an optimal total intracellular and extracellular body water content, which is the ultimate goal of fluid intake protocols within athletics. The aim of this research was to investigate if a specific fluid recommendations for track and field (TAF) athletes, based upon urine specific gravity (USG) classification cutoffs, helps to improve athletic performance. This study also analyzed …
"The Wild Asleep": A Cultural And Environmental History Of Ramps, Catherine Jessee
"The Wild Asleep": A Cultural And Environmental History Of Ramps, Catherine Jessee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ramps, wild onions, or allium tricoccum are a variety of spring ephemeral, or a flowering plant that emerges for a brief period every spring. In working through stereotypical ideas about Appalachian regional identity, I interpret the environmental history of this plant. Incorporating memory, oral histories, and folklore, this thesis complicates wider conceptions of home, community, and boundary. Tapping into an archive of ramps knowledge as it is created, I ask, what can the future of ramps tell us about place, space, and belonging?
The Longitudinal Influence Of Adhd Status And Stimulant Medication On Body Mass Index And Blood Pressure Among Obese Youth, Sophie Kollin
The Longitudinal Influence Of Adhd Status And Stimulant Medication On Body Mass Index And Blood Pressure Among Obese Youth, Sophie Kollin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Youth with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more vulnerable to developing obesity, as they have significantly higher body mass index (BMI) and are at increased risk of food addiction and binge eating. Stimulant medication use, which is an evidence-based treatment for ADHD, is associated with lower BMI and higher blood pressure among normal weight youth. The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal influence of ADHD and stimulant medication use on BMI and blood pressure trajectories among a sample of 456 youth treated in a weight management clinic. Mixed linear modeling examined the main and interactive effects of …

Speech Fluency Changes Following Deep Brain Stimulation Of The Subthalamic Nucleus In Parkinson’S Disease: A Meta-Analysis, Emily Morphis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Speech fluency changes following deep brain stimulation are one aspect that is crucial to consider when exploring treatments for Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation, specifically of the subthalamic nucleus, has been linked to a decrease in speech fluency despite improved bodily motor control. This acquired dysfluency is referred to as “neurogenic stuttering.” The purpose of the current study is to determine the incidence and severity of speech fluency decline following deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinson’s disease. A meta-analysis was conducted with 7 studies (239 subjects) that recorded changes in speech fluency. All studies used a quantitative assessment, …
Role Of Astrocytic Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 In The Regulation Of Behavior, Cognition, And Neuroinflammation, Brayden Thomas
Role Of Astrocytic Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 In The Regulation Of Behavior, Cognition, And Neuroinflammation, Brayden Thomas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Modern medicine has consistently extended life expectancy over recent decades and centuries. Despite this, age-associated cognitive decline and risk of neurodegenerative disease grow in parallel with lifespan, meaning the capacity to live healthier has not mirrored that to live longer. Many studies in both human and rodents have shown the association between age-related cognitive impairment and reduction of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signaling. Additional research has indicated that dysregulated IGF-1 signaling, either systemic or local to the central nervous system (CNS) in cells like neurons and glia, leads to impaired spatial learning and memory in mice. Glia, or glial cells, …

Using Adaptive-Choice Based Conjoint Analysis To Explore Attributes Important In Performance For Division 1 College Football Players, Michaela Marie Slatniske
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interdisciplinary teams are essential in the care of collegiate athletes. However, interdisciplinary teams may be composed of members who place utility in key athletic attributes differently. To better understand the differences in utilities various members place on athletic attributes, this study explored the relative importance of attributes in wide receivers (WR), and part-worth utilizes among levels of an attribute through an Adaptive Choice Based Conjoint (ACBC) study. Interdisciplinary team member involved in the care of college football players, including athletic trainers (ATs), ball coaches (BCs), strength and conditioning coaches (S&C), and sports dietitians (SN) were identified from 131 D1 collegiate …
An Examination Of Poverty: Dimensions, Causes, And Solutions, David Nii O. Tackie
An Examination Of Poverty: Dimensions, Causes, And Solutions, David Nii O. Tackie
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This article, based on the 2021 Southern Rural Sociological Association (SRSA) Presidential Address, assesses the dimensions, causes of, and solutions to poverty. It finds that the definition of poverty varies based on the criteria used, and even by which agency or institution is defining it. It also finds that poverty indices vary by state and by county. For instance, in selected SRSA states, Virginia has the lowest poverty rate and Mississippi has the highest poverty rate. There are several causes of poverty, some of which are lower levels of education, lower levels of health, unemployment, lack of livable wages, and …

Transmission Studies And The Composition Of Prokaryotic Communities Associated With Healthy And Diseased Aplysina Cauliformis Sponges Suggest That Aplysina Red Band Syndrome Is A Prokaryotic Polymicrobial Disease, Matteo Monti, Aurora Giorgi, Cole G. Easson, Deborah J. Gochfeld
Faculty and Student Publications
Aplysina cauliformis, the Caribbean purple rope sponge, is commonly affected by Aplysina Red Band Syndrome (ARBS). This transmissible disease manifests as circular lesions with red margins and results in bare spongin fibers. Leptolyngbya spp. appear to be responsible for the characteristic red coloration but transmission studies with a sponge-derived isolate failed to establish disease, leaving the etiology of ARBS unknown. To investigate the cause of ARBS, contact transmission experiments were performed between healthy and diseased sponges separated by filters with varying pore sizes. Transmission occurred when sponges were separated by filters with pore sizes ≥ 2.5 μm, suggesting a prokaryotic …

Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1 or delta-9 desaturase, D9D) is a key metabolic protein that modulates cellular inflammation and stress, but overactivity of SCD1 is associated with diseases, including cancer and metabolic syndrome. This transmembrane endoplasmic reticulum protein converts saturated fatty acids into monounsaturated fatty acids, primarily stearoyl-CoA into oleoyl- CoA, which are critical products for energy metabolism and membrane composition. The present computational molecular dynamics study characterizes the molecular dynamics of SCD1 with substrate, product, and as an apoprotein. The modeling of SCD1:fatty acid interactions suggests that: (1) SCD1:CoA moiety interactions open the substrate-binding tunnel, (2) SCD1 stabilizes a substrate conformation …

Weak Spatial-Genetic Structure In A Native Invasive, The Southern Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus Frontalis), Across The Eastern United States, Ryan C. Garrick, Ísis C. Arantes, Megan B. Stubbs, Nathan P. Havill
Faculty and Student Publications
The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis, is a native pest of pine trees that has recently expanded its range into the northeastern United States. Understanding its colonization, dispersal, and connectivity will be critical for mitigating negative economic and ecological impacts in the newly invaded areas. Characterization of spatial-genetic structure can contribute to this; however, previous studies have reached different conclusions about regional population genetic structure, with one study reporting a weak east-west pattern, and the most recent reporting an absence of structure. Here we systematically assessed several explanations for the absence of spatial-genetic structure. To do this, we developed nine …

On Caribbean coral reefs, sponges are important members of the benthic community and play multiple roles in ecosystem structure and function. They have an important role in benthic-pelagic coupling, consuming particulate organic matter (POM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) and in turn providing food in the form of sponge biomass or the release of detritus for a variety of coral reef organisms. Throughout the Caribbean, sponges show consistent increases in their abundance and growth rates as depth increases into the mesophotic zone (30–150 m). This has been hypothesized to be driven by bottom-up forces, particularly the increased supply of nitrogen-rich …

Comparison And Predicted Equation Of Energy Expenditure During Walking Or Running Among Caucasians, African Americans And Asians, Xi Jin, Teresa Carithers, Mark Loftin
Faculty and Student Publications
Knowledge of measured energy expenditure (EE) during walking and running is important for exercise prescription. Further, research on the EE comparison and EE predicted equation during walking or running among different ethnicities is limited. The purpose of the current study was to compare EE to walk or run 1 mile in Caucasian, African American and Asian adults and to develop a regression equation to predict EE to walk or run 1 mile. Two hundred and twenty-four participants were included (71 Caucasians, 68 African Americans and 85 Asians) with 3 groups (normal weight walking, overweight walking and running). EE was measured …

With the emerging popularity of online food delivery (OFD) services, this research examined predictors affecting customer intention to use OFD services amid the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Specifically, Study 1 examined the moderating effect of the pandemic on the relationship between six predictors (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, price saving benefit, time saving benefit, food safety risk perception, and trust) and OFD usage intention, and Study 2 extended the model by adding customer perceptions of COVID-19 (perceived severity and vulnerability) during the pandemic. Study 1 showed that all of the predictors except food safety risk perception significantly affected OFD …
