Complete Tripartite Graphs And Their Competition Numbers, Jaromy Kuhl
Complete Tripartite Graphs And Their Competition Numbers, Jaromy Kuhl
Combinatorics Seminar
Let G be a simple graph and let Ik denote the graph on k isolated vertices. The competition number of G is the minimum k such that G Ik is the competition graph of an acyclic digraph. We present a piecewise formula for the competition numbers of the complete tripartite graphs. For positive integers x, y and z where 2 x y z, the competition number of the complete tripartite graph Kxy z is yz z y x + 3 whenever x= y and yz 2y z+4otherwise. Wealso present bounds for the competition number of Knnnn when n is odd.
Generic Special Objects, Sławomir Solecki
Generic Special Objects, Sławomir Solecki
Dalrymple Lecture Series
I will talk about mathematical objects that have two seemingly contradictory attributes. On the one hand, they are generic within a given class, in the sense that if most objects within the class have a property, then our object has it as well. So generic objects are common. On the other hand, they are very special if they exist, for example, there is always, in essence, at most one such object within a given class. Generic objects show up in various areas of mathematics, for example, in topology, geometry, and analysis. They tend to have astonishing mathematical features. Can you …

Degree Sum Condition For K-Ordered Hamiltonian Connected Graphs, Emlee Nicholson
Degree Sum Condition For K-Ordered Hamiltonian Connected Graphs, Emlee Nicholson
Combinatorics Seminar
Let G be a graph on n vertices. If for any ordered set of vertices S = v1 v2 vk , that is, the vertices in S appear in order of the sequence v1 v2 vk, there exists a v1 vk (hamiltonian) path containing S in the given order, then G is k-ordered (hamiltonian) connected. Let u1 u2 and u3 u4 be any distinct pairs of nonadjacent vertices. We de ne 4 = mindG(u1) + dG(u2) + dG(u3) + dG(u4) when G= Kn and G= Kn e, otherwise set 4(G) = . In this talk we will present some new …

Well-Covered K-Trees, K-Frames, And Unique Colorability, Wanda Payne
Well-Covered K-Trees, K-Frames, And Unique Colorability, Wanda Payne
Combinatorics Seminar
A graph is said to be well-covered if all maximal independent vertex sets have the same cardinality. Well-covered trees can be characterized as trees with a perfect matching consisting of pendant edges, i.e. edges incident with a vertex of degree one. The main result of the talk is a generalization of this result to k-trees, with pendant cliques playing in k-trees the role which pendant edges play in trees. A graph is said to be uniquely colorable if, modulo permutations of the colors, there is only one coloring in the minimal number of colors. It is easy to see that …
