Estimating Proportions By Group Testing: A Frequentist Approach, Charles Katholi
Estimating Proportions By Group Testing: A Frequentist Approach, Charles Katholi
Probability & Statistics Seminar
Group testing is a statistical method for estimating proportions of a factor in a population by testing pools of subjects rather than individuals. Although group testing has been in the literature since 1943, the use of the method has increased dramatically in the last two decades because of the development of screening methods based on DNA amplification by PCR. The probability model for this approach is presented and a short history of the method and a survey of known results are given. Two cases are distinguished; when the pool sizes are equal and when they are not equal. A new …

On Regular And Binary Matroids Without Small Minors, Kayla Davis Harville
Combinatorics Seminar
A matroid is a mathematical set system that is a common generalization of the concepts of a graph and of a projective geometry. Many important results in combinatorics deal with excluded-minor characterizations of classes of graphs and matroids. One famous example of such a result is Kuratowskis Theorem which states that a graph is planar if and only if it is K5K33free. Guoli Ding and Cheng Liu have characterized many classes of graphs that are H-free for graphs H with fewer than twelve edges. We have extended some of their results to the class of regular 3-connected matroids. Dillon Mayhew …

Dynamical Models For Superdiffusion And Superconductivity, Nikolai Chernov
Dynamical Models For Superdiffusion And Superconductivity, Nikolai Chernov
Colloquium
Electrical current is modeled by a periodic Lorentz gas under an external field. One can also picture this as a pinball machine or a Glaton board. Depending on the size and positions of the pins (heavy molecules) the resulting current may be normal (satisfying Ohm’s law and the Einstein relation) or ballistic (exhibiting superconductivity). Most of the facts were first observed by physicists in computer experiments and recently proven rigorously by mathematics. A few facts, though, were first discovered mathematically and then verified experimentally.

Who Counts Reality And Why It Counts: Searching For A Community-Based Approach To Quantitative Inquiry, John J. Green
Who Counts Reality And Why It Counts: Searching For A Community-Based Approach To Quantitative Inquiry, John J. Green
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Community-based research is often discussed in a way that assumes an inherent qualitative methodological approach. This includes discussions of research design, data collection, and analysis. The limitations of quantitative research aside, ignoring this strategy for developing knowledge may result in many project outcomes going undocumented and unmeasured, and it may ultimately be disempowering for the people and organizations that community-based researchers seek to assist. On this basis, I argue that researchers should take a more holistic and pragmatic approach to methods and analysis, following efforts to go beyond the traditional qualitative-quantitative divide. Doing so will provide the basis for addressing …

Don’T I Know You? A Misstep In Teaching Mathematics With And For Social Justice In A Rural Context, Joel Amidon
Don’T I Know You? A Misstep In Teaching Mathematics With And For Social Justice In A Rural Context, Joel Amidon
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
In this paper, I document my own struggles and insights in moving toward a pedagogy of teaching mathematics with and for social justice within a rural high school. Teaching mathematics for social justice has been presented as a way to address the inequities present in the classroom, and the world at large, by having students work with mathematics to question and analyze inequities in their world (Gutstein, 2006). Inclusive education has been presented as a means for providing all students, regardless of their needs, abilities and interests, access to engaging content in the classroom (Villa & Thousand, 2005). These approaches …

Promoting College Readiness And Access: Practices And Policy Implications, Frankie Williams
Promoting College Readiness And Access: Practices And Policy Implications, Frankie Williams
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
Persisting social and economic inequalities exist in achieving a postsecondary education. These inequalities are attributable to economic, racial, and gender disparities that result in considerable gaps in college access, achievement, and college completion for minority groups. This article presents the current landscape for college readiness and access. Effective practices for promoting college readiness and access are discussed along with policy implications at the state level.

A Pilot Study On The Use Of Nonlinguistic Concrete Materials And Drama To Aid Vocabulary Learning For Third-Grade Students, Kerry P. Holmes, Stacy V. Holmes, Blair Ellenburg
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
This article reports on the effects of the use of nonlinguistic concrete materials and dramatization on student vocabulary learning in eight third-grade classrooms. It follows a preceding study which determined that the use of nonlinguistic concrete materials and drama in K-3 classrooms for vocabulary instruction was minimal and varied across content areas. The results of the pilot study showed that the use of nonlinguistic materials significantly improved vocabulary learning for normally-progressing students (p=0.00185), but had little or no effect on students in reading intervention classrooms. The study was quasi-experimental in nature and utilized six third-grade classrooms of normally-progressing students and …
