Amalgamations And Hamilton Decompositions, Chris Rodger
Amalgamations And Hamilton Decompositions, Chris Rodger
Combinatorics Seminar
In this talk, we will explore the use of amalgamations in the construction of graph decompositions, most often looking for hamilton cycle decompositions. This method uses graph homomorphisms to envision an outline of the structure of interest, then attempts to disentangle the merging of vertices e ected by the homomorphism in such an outline structure. As will be shown, this method has proved to be very e ective, for example, in the studying the embedding of edge-colorings of graphs into hamilton decompositions, and the existence of maximal sets of hamilton cycles in various graphs. The talk is full of pictures …
K-Trees, K-Frames, Shells And Independence Polynomials, William Staton
K-Trees, K-Frames, Shells And Independence Polynomials, William Staton
Combinatorics Seminar
Much of what is known about trees extends smoothly to k-trees. Some fairly recent results of this type, concerning independence polynomials, will be presented. We discuss the shell of a k-tree, corresponding to the line graph of a tree, and some steps are taken toward a possible characterization of shells. A new class of graphs, the k-frames will be de ned, generalizing the k-trees. In each of these classes of graphs, the problem of characterizing the well-covered graphs will be discussed. This is joint work with John Estes, Wanda Payne, Lanzhen Song , Bing Wei and others.

Systematic Observations Of The Availability And Use Of Instructional Technology In Urban Middle School Classrooms, Hersh C. Waxman, Russell T. Evans, Anna W. Boriack, Emin Kilinc
Systematic Observations Of The Availability And Use Of Instructional Technology In Urban Middle School Classrooms, Hersh C. Waxman, Russell T. Evans, Anna W. Boriack, Emin Kilinc
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
The present study uses systematic observations to investigate the availability and use of instructional technology in 64 middle school classrooms serving predominantly minority students from economically disadvantaged families. The T3 Overall Classroom Observation Measure, a high-inference walk-through instrument, was developed to examine: (a) types and use of technology present in the classroom, (b) teachers’ technology usage, (c) students’ technology usage, (d) teachers’ general instructional behaviors, and (e) students’ general behaviors. The results revealed that instructional technology was widely available in the classrooms, but most teachers and students were only using it to “some extent.”
Teachers’ And Students’ Beliefs About Ells In Mainstream Mathematics Classrooms, Stacie K. Pettit
Teachers’ And Students’ Beliefs About Ells In Mainstream Mathematics Classrooms, Stacie K. Pettit
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
The purpose of this study was to explore the beliefs middle school mathematics teachers have about ELLs, to identify the strategies used to help ELLs, to explore the support teachers need to teach ELLs, and understand some of the experiences of ELLs in mainstream mathematics classrooms. In addition to student and teacher interviews, 106 middle school mathematics teachers from 11 school systems completed a questionnaire. The qualitative portion of the data is presented here.
Structural Integrity: A Paradigm Of Systemic Engineering And Organization, Conn Thomas, Dennish Bunch, Joe Blackbourn, Jennifer Fillingim
Structural Integrity: A Paradigm Of Systemic Engineering And Organization, Conn Thomas, Dennish Bunch, Joe Blackbourn, Jennifer Fillingim
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
This article addresses the nature of educational organizations for an engineering perspective. Principles of structural engineering are employed as a means of examining and addressing problems within educational organizations. Both current and future issues are addressed in relation to the redesign of educational organizations in relation to function, flexibility, and efficacy. Suggestions and recommendations are provided.

On Excluded And Unavoidable Minors In Graphs, Stan Dziobiak
Combinatorics Seminar
A classical result of Kuratowski and Wagner states that a graph G is planar if and only if K5 and K33 are not minors of G. (A minor of a graph G is a graph obtained from G by any sequence of the following operations: contracting edges, deleting edges, and deleting vertices). In the mid 80s, Robertson and Seymour proved one of the deepest theorems in combinatorics, known as the Graph Minor Theorem (GMT): in any innite set of graphs, at least one graph is a minor of another. Equivalently, a class of graphs is closed under minors if and …

Accounting Books Of The Imperial Waqfs (Charitable Endowments) In The Eastern Mediterranean (15th To 19th Centuries), Kayhan Orbay
Accounting Historians Journal
The history of accounting in the Eastern Mediterranean has not been adequately studied through its primary sources, despite the fact that the Turkish archives house an enormous amount of material for exploring accounting practices in the Ottoman Empire. Ottomanists used the account books as sources for Ottoman socioeconomic and institutional history. They analyzed, fully transliterated and published the account registers of the central treasury, the Istanbul shipyard and the waqf institutions. Nevertheless, accounting historians did not even show interest into published archival sources up until recent years. Owing to a few recent works that were based on the primary sources, …

Donaldson Brown (1885-1965): The Power Of An Individual And His Ideas Over Time, Dale L. Flesher, Gary John Previts
Accounting Historians Journal
Donaldson Brown developed the expanded Return on Investment (ROI) measure, or DuPont formula, in 1914. However ROI was not Brown's only contribution to financial management. His dealer ten-day reporting system was widely and rapidly adopted throughout the auto industry. His ideas to support a variety of forecasting and planning techniques supported decentralized corporate management and his pricing processes were cutting-edge developments that others tried to emulate. Flexible budgeting at General Motors, frequently unrecognized, also was in place during his financial administration in the early 1920s. ROI remains Brown's most prominent contribution and the technique achieved status as a dominant approach …

Salmagundi; Richard Brief's Contributions To Accounting Thought: Enlivening Accounting History, Robert Bloom
Accounting Historians Journal
This is a personal appreciation of Richard Brief, the accounting historian and professor, who died in 2013. Dick served as a member of my doctoral dissertation committee in 1975-1976. The author of a number of provocative articles on the evolution of accounting practice in the United States and abroad, he published in The Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, and Business History Review. Brief was well-known for editing numerous books on accounting history in the United States and abroad. Additionally, his papers on the application of statistics to accounting issues and financial statement ratios were forerunners in the mathematical …

Impact Mechanics Of A Lap Joint: A Theoretical-Based Parametric Study, Seyed Amir Mansoor Rahmani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The failure of a single connection can cause overload on other structural members, which may consequently fail. Thus, the behavior of damaged or worn joints is of particular concern. In order to represent a loose lap joint, a beam impacting four springs with gaps is modeled. A basis analysis reveals impulse frequency responses with unique dynamic phenomena. Using steady state response, six influential parameters are studied: damping ratio, contact stiffness, position of intermediate springs, gaps, excitation amplitude and beam height. For all parameters, the system response was highly controlled by modes with two contacting springs. Regarding damping, increasing damping ratio …
