Examining Rural-Urban Population Change In The Southeastern United States, Buddhi Raj Gyawali, Anquinette Hill, Swagata “Ban” Banerjee, Duncan Chembezi, Colemore Christian, James Bukenya, Maifan Silitonga
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study examined the factors that influenced population change in 875 counties in the southeastern United States between 1970 and 2000, using U.S. Census data. Binary logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between socioeconomic factors and population change. The results of marginal probability estimates indicate that race and employment factors have been strongly related to population change in these counties. African-American-dominant counties have lost population to urban areas of more diverse counties. Our results suggest that individuals place high importance on better education, job opportunities, and living conditions in their decisions to move from their traditional places …
Algebraic Methods In Geometric Problems, Javid Validashti
Algebraic Methods In Geometric Problems, Javid Validashti
Colloquium
In this talk, I will describe some algebraic methods to study problems in geometry, where there is a beautiful interplay between ideas from commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. The main goal is to understand how geometric ideas manifest in various algebraic structures and invariants. It turns out there are often elegant characterizations of geometric properties in terms of algebraic conditions that can be captured numerically. For instance, certain equisingularity conditions are translated into algebraic conditions known as integral dependence of modules, governed by numerical invariants referred to as multiplicities. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend.

Logistic Regression Model Effectiveness: Proportional Chance Criteria And Proportional Reduction In Error, Jeffry L. White
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
The importance of classification tables in binary logistic regression analysis has not been fully recognized. This may be due to an over reliance on statistical software or lack of awareness of the value that computation of the proportional by chance accuracy criteria (PCC) and proportional reduction in error (PRE) statistic can add to binary logistic regression models. Case illustrations are used in this paper to demonstrate the usefulness of these computations. An overview of logistic regression is proffered along with a discussion of the function of case classifications and strategies in application of the PCC and PRE. It offers guidance …
