In addition, total-Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) levels were determined in the inflow and outflows from Enid and Sardis Lakes and in bottom sediment and suspended solids in Enid Lake. Potential sources of Hg to Enid Lake were investigated, including precipitation and runoff from urban, …

Well-Covered Graphs, Unique Colorability, And Covering Range, Wanda Renea Payne Jan 2013

Well-Covered Graphs, Unique Colorability, And Covering Range, Wanda Renea Payne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A graph is called well-covered if all of its maximal independent sets have the same cardinality. We give a characterization of well-covered k-trees. A graph is said to be uniquely χ-colorable if, modulo permutations of colors, it has exactly one proper χ-coloring. The k-trees with at least k+1 vertices are minimal uniquely (k +1)-colorable, i.e., they have the minimal number of edges necessary for uniquely (k+1)-colorable graphs. We introduce the k-frames, a new class of minimal uniquely (k+1)-colorable graphs that generalizes the k-trees.

The covering range of a graph is the difference between the cardinality of a largest maximal independent …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between patient adherence to secondary prevention therapies post an initial episode of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and subsequent risk of cardiovascular events by using time-invariant and time-varying measures of adherence. The effectiveness of both measures in predicting a (i) recurrent AMI, and (ii) mortality using various mathematical models and statistical techniques was compared. Time dependent confounding was accounted for by using marginal structural models (MSMs). A longitudinal cohort observational study design was employed using the retrospective Medicare 5% random national sample claims data from January 1st, 2006 to December 31st, …

Reconsidering The Theoretical/Practical Divide: The Philosophy Of Nishida Kitarō, Lockland Vance Tyler Jan 2013

Reconsidering The Theoretical/Practical Divide: The Philosophy Of Nishida Kitarō, Lockland Vance Tyler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the years professional philosophy has undergone a number of significant changes. One of these changes corresponds to an increased emphasis on objectivity among philosophers. In light of new discoveries in logic and science, contemporary analytic philosophy seeks to establish the most objective methods and answers possible to advance philosophical progress in an unambiguous way. By doing so, we are able to more precisely analyze concepts, but the increased emphasis on precision has also been accompanied by some negative consequences. These consequences, unfortunately, are much larger and problematic than many may even realize. What we have eventually arrived in at …

Numerical Modeling Of Lightning Initiation And Stepped Leader Propagation, Sumedhe Karunarathne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) observed at the beginning of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes and stepped leaders that folloIBPs were modeled using multi-sensor electric field change (E-change) measurements. This study uses data collected with a network of ten E-change sensors located at Kennedy Space Center. Locations (x,y,z,t) of IBPs were found using a time-of-arrival technique called PBFA. Location errors were determined from Monte Carlo simulations and were usually less than 100 m for horizontal coordinates and several hundreds of meters for altitude. Comparison of PBFA source locations to locations from a VHF lightning mapping system shows that PBFA locates most of …

Molecular Considerations In The Design Of Novel Alpha/Beta Hydrolase Inhibitors, Shana Victoria Stoddard Jan 2013

Molecular Considerations In The Design Of Novel Alpha/Beta Hydrolase Inhibitors, Shana Victoria Stoddard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alpha/beta hydrolases (ABHs) are a superfamily of hydrolytic enzymes that process a wide variety of substrates. A subfamily of ABHs called carboxylesterases (CEs) are important enzymes that catalyze biological detoxification, hydrolysis of certain pesticides, and metabolism of many esterified drugs. The chemotherapy drug irinotecan used for treatment of colorectal cancer is metabolized to SN-38, the active drug metabolite, by two CE isozymes CES1 (localized in the liver) and CES2 (localized in the small intestines). CES2's ability to activate irinotecan at a faster rate than CES1 creates a localization of activated SN-38 in the gut epithelium, resulting in the dose limiting …

Modeling Software Product Lines Using Feature Diagrams, Hazim Husain Shatnawi Jan 2013

Modeling Software Product Lines Using Feature Diagrams, Hazim Husain Shatnawi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The leading strategies for systematic software reuse focus on reuse of domain knowledge. One such strategy is software product line engineering. This strategy selects a set of reusable software components that form the core around which software products in a domain are built. Feature modeling is a process that enables engineers to identify these core assets, in particular the com(e.g., shared) and variable features of products. The focus of this thesis is to give an overview of the feature modeling process by introducing feature diagrams. Feature diagrams capture and represent comand variable properties (features) of the software products in a …

Partial Replica Location And Selection For Spatial Datasets, Yun Tian Jan 2013

Partial Replica Location And Selection For Spatial Datasets, Yun Tian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the size of scientific datasets continues to grow, we will not be able to store enormous datasets on a single grid node, but must distribute them across many grid nodes. The implementation of partial or incomplete replicas, which represent only a subset of a larger dataset, has been an active topic of research. Partial Spatial Replicas extend this functionality to spatial data, allowing us to distribute a spatial dataset in pieces over several locations. We investigate solutions to the partial spatial replica selection problems. First, we describe and develop two designs for an Spatial Replica Location Service (SRLS), which …

Advances in two-dimensional numerical modeling have allodam break floods to be simulated with larger domains than ever before. These types of simulations are important to meet the needs of inundation mapping, consequence analysis, and emergency planning for the large number of significant and high-hazard dams in the United States. Globally refining the mesh to the small cell sizes necessary to resolve small features such as dam breach geometry result in significant computational burden for these types of simulations. This manuscript details the research done to facilitate the implementation of quadtree local mesh refinement to represent dam breach geometry in an …

Pedagogy And Identity In "The Night Lessons" Of Finnegans Wake, Zachary Paul Smola Jan 2013

Pedagogy And Identity In "The Night Lessons" Of Finnegans Wake, Zachary Paul Smola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores chapter II.ii of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake (1939)—commonly called "The Night Lessons"—and its peculiar use of the conventions of the textbook as a form. In the midst of the Wake's abstraction, Joyce uses the textbook to undertake a rigorous exploration of epistemology and education. By looking at the specific expectations of and ambitions for textbooks in 19th century Irish national schools, this thesis aims to provide a more specific historical context for what textbooks might mean as they appear in Finnegans Wake. As instruments of cultural conditioning, Irish textbooks were fraught with tension arising from their investment …

Generative Space: Embodiment And Identity At The Margins On The Early Modern Stage, Sallie Anglin Jan 2013

Generative Space: Embodiment And Identity At The Margins On The Early Modern Stage, Sallie Anglin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In "Generative Space: Embodiment and Identity at the Margins on the Early Modern Stage," I argue that the early modern stage provides a space in which emerging, marginal and unsanctioned identities can be shaped through the physical interactions between characters and their environments. Spaces that are marginalized on the stage, set apart from the main action of the play, or considered culturally or environmentally offensive, harbor figures that are not socially accepted or alloto exist legitimately outside of those spaces. This is in some ways liberating to the characters, but at the same time their identities are contingent upon the …

Improving Qualitative Assessment In Higher Education, Chad Woodson Russell Jan 2013

Improving Qualitative Assessment In Higher Education, Chad Woodson Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers in turn the role education plays in civil, democratic society; the role assessment plays in education; and the role theoretical constructs and cultural contexts play in assessment. Then, through literature review, document analysis, and interviews, the analysis investigates, identifies, and recommends grounded-theory-derived practices for improving qualitative assessment in higher education settings. The process of qualitative assessment is understood as being heuristic and continual, requiring re-examination and revision to maintain both its validity and reliability. To this end, rubrics are essential to efficiently and reliably assessing everything qualitative, whereas the realities of institutional culture and politics require adroit …

Malaria is a widespread tropical and subtropical parasitic disease which is caused by malarial parasites and transmitted by the infected anopheles mosquitoe. The natural product artemisinin and its derivatives are currently considered the most effective drugs against drug resistant plasmodium falciparum. However, its undesired physicochemical proprieties have limited its usage. In order to improve its effectiveness, scientists around the world have developed novel methodology to synthesize artemisinin derivatives on different positions of the artemisinin skeleton. Previous work in our group has shown that many analogues modified at the C-16 …

[ ] (Making Sense Of What Is Known And What Is Unknown, Jake Weigel Jan 2013

[ ] (Making Sense Of What Is Known And What Is Unknown, Jake Weigel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ontological curiosity of how "things" work and how our perceptions are shaped are two of the most innate and difficult questions to answer as there is a vast amount of information that is unknowable. The great void of this unknown is the driving force behind all mystical, alchemical and religious endeavors throughout human history, which seek to alleviate the discomfort of such nature. The art that I create is from a complex development of research and experience into this area of philosophy. It seeks to visualize the immaterial in order to have a better grasp on the difficult questions. …

The final result will also describe …

Interaction Of The Cyclonic Winds With The Infrasonic Signal Generated By A Large Maritime Storm, Philip Stephen Blom Jan 2013

Interaction Of The Cyclonic Winds With The Infrasonic Signal Generated By A Large Maritime Storm, Philip Stephen Blom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The collision of counter propagating ocean surface waves of like periods is known to produce an infrasonic signal termed a microbarom. It has been suggested that microbaroms associated with large maritime storms are generated far from the storm center at a location in which the storm swell and background swell have equal period and are counter-propagating. It is shown in this work that the interaction of the atmospheric microbarom signal generated by a large maritime storm with the cyclonic winds of the storm results in a characteristic acoustic signal far from the storm which could potentially be used to estimate …

These liquid salts have a number of unique properties that make them an interesting system to study. These properties include almost zero vapor pressure, thermal stability, large liquidus range, etc. Due to these properties and others, ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted much attention in the emerging field of green chemistry as potentially new solvents for many of the hazardous and volatile solvents currently in use. Moreover, the complex interactions of the anion and cation systems …

Shifting Local Ecologies: Biocultural Interactions And Ecuadorian Public Health, Sabrina Bradford Jan 2013

Shifting Local Ecologies: Biocultural Interactions And Ecuadorian Public Health, Sabrina Bradford

Honors Theses

Though biology is considered universal, this thesis argues against the assumption of the universal applications of biomedicine in favor of a biocultural approach, emphasizing shifting local ecologies in an increasingly globalized world. This research investigated Ecuadorian health within an ecological context in coordination with an international public health internship that was completed through the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and the Ecuadorian Ministerio de Salud Pública. Throughout this thesis, examples are provided demonstrating that globalization, though appearing as a homogenous process on the international level, creates heterogeneous effects on the local scale. To explain the mechanisms and implications of these …
