© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Background: Cognitive decline and balance impairment are prevalent in the aging population. Previous studies investigated the beneficial effects of 24-style Tai Chi (TC-24) on either cognitive function or balance performance of older adults. It still remains largely unknown whether modified Chen-style TC (MTC) that includes 18 complex movements is more beneficial for these age-related health outcomes, as compared to TC-24. Objective: We investigated if MTC would show greater effects than TC-24 on global cognitive function and balance-related outcomes among older adults. Methods: We conducted a randomized trial where 80 eligible adults …

Elemental Analysis Of Edible Clay From The Copperbelt Province Of Zambia, Amelia M. Craze, Mina L. Brandon May 2019

Elemental Analysis Of Edible Clay From The Copperbelt Province Of Zambia, Amelia M. Craze, Mina L. Brandon

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Trace elements in three edible clay samples from an open-air market in Kitwe, Zambia were analyzed for heavy metals using a scanning electron microscope coupled with an energy-dispersive spectrometer. The ingestion of clays has been observed throughout history but persists in many rural countries that lack sufficient access to proper medical care. In many African countries, women have been observed eating clay during pregnancy to reduce nausea or meet their recommended intake of iron. Similar studies identified harmful heavy metals in the makeup of the edible clays, however, the results of this analysis elemental analysis coupled with the SEM for …

Watering The Desert: Azraq, Public Opinion, And Environmental Post-Materialism, Wesley A. Gerard May 2019

Watering The Desert: Azraq, Public Opinion, And Environmental Post-Materialism, Wesley A. Gerard

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This article focuses on physical, socioeconomic, and political changes in the community of Azraq, Jordan. Azraq, a small town in northeastern Jordan, sits atop a large aquifer that has been heavily pumped by the government for several decades in response to an increasing nationwide demand for water. This has led to large-scale transformations in not only the physical landscape surrounding the aquifer, but also in the daily lives, economic statuses, and political opinions of the people living there. My research thus fits the case of Azraq into larger academic discourse on groundwater governance, resource access, and environmentalism. I use a …

How Moisture Content Levels And Packing Density In Soil Affect Crude Oil Spreads, Shaylin N. Williams May 2019

How Moisture Content Levels And Packing Density In Soil Affect Crude Oil Spreads, Shaylin N. Williams

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Crude oil spills are one of the most destructive disasters that can occur, and they are extremely difficult to recover from. Many studies focus on what can be done to clean these crude oil spills, but more research should be focused on means of prevention. Currently, very little is known about how the moisture content levels and the packing efficiency of soil can affect an oil spill. These two factors alone can offer a variety of information to environmental agencies, manufacturers, and refineries. Through utilization of a chemical engineering lab, a recording mechanism, and ImagePro software, data was collected and …

Methods Utilizing The Phenomena Of Light Scattering To Measure Microscopic Aluminum Oxide Particle Size In Both Solution And Turbulent Air Flow, Lawrence Edward Deese May 2019

Methods Utilizing The Phenomena Of Light Scattering To Measure Microscopic Aluminum Oxide Particle Size In Both Solution And Turbulent Air Flow, Lawrence Edward Deese

Honors Theses

Lawrence Deese: Methods Utilizing the Phenomena of Light Scattering to Measure Microscopic Aluminum Oxide Particle Size in Both Solution and Turbulent Air Flow The purpose of this research project was to measure microscopic aluminum oxide (alumina) particle size both in solution and in air flow. Experimentally, the process of sizing microscopic particles is technically challenging. Two methods were used for measuring the sizes of 4 different manufacturer labeled aluminum oxide particles sizes. The first method was using Dynamic Light Scattering analyzed by a LS Spectrometer to measure the alumina particle size while suspended in solution. The second method was using …

Internalizing Disorders Among Mississippi Public School Students And The Need For Intervention, Madison Varner Apr 2019

Internalizing Disorders Among Mississippi Public School Students And The Need For Intervention, Madison Varner

Honors Theses

Childhood anxiety disorders traditionally do not garner much attention in academic settings. However, many studies have concluded that approximately 1 in 8 children has an anxiety disorder by age 12, often beginning at earlier ages but going undiagnosed. Further, studies have shown that these disorders strongly affect both behavior (e.g. bullying, school attendance, and social performance) and academic performance (e.g. literacy, mathematical learning). Under several existing pieces of legislature, public schools should already be providing treatment for these disorders; however, due to financial costs and the silent nature of these internalizing disorders, few schools have any provisions for the numerous …

Background: Due to the nature of their work, state park workers receive substantial exposure to sunlight, putting them at an increased risk of developing skin cancer. Increased use of sun protection behaviors can reduce this risk. Objectives: Using the health belief model (HBM) as a theoretical framework, the purpose of this study was to assess factors associated with sun protection behaviors among state-park workers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of participants were recruited from 23 state parks in the Southeastern …

The Bounds Of Vertex Padmakar-Ivan Index On K-Trees, Shaohui Wang, Zehui Shao, Jia Bao Liu, Bing Wei

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019 by the authors. The Padmakar-Ivan (PI) index is a distance-based topological index and a molecular structure descriptor, which is the sum of the number of vertices over all edges uv of a graph such that these vertices are not equidistant from u and v. In this paper, we explore the results of PI-indices from trees to recursively clustered trees, the k-trees. Exact sharp upper bounds of PI indices on k-trees are obtained by the recursive relationships, and the corresponding extremal graphs are given. In addition, we determine the PI-values on some classes of k-trees and compare them, and …

© 2018 The Authors This study examines the initiation of two intracloud (IC) and two cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes using electric field change (FA) sensors and VHF (LogRF) sensors located at seven sites near Oxford, Mississippi, USA. For each flash the initiating event caused a pulse in the LogRF data and started an Initial E-Change (IEC) in the FA data. The initiating LogRF pulses had powers ~1 μs. Numerous LogRF pulses occurred during each IEC; these pulses had durations ≤3 μs. Fewer FA pulses occurred during each IEC; these pulses had durations of ≤7 μs. During each IEC, a few …
