Cis/Trans Energetics In Epoxide, Thiirane, Aziridine And Phosphirane Containing Cyclopentanols: Effects Of Intramolecular Oh···O,S,N And P Contacts, Ben E. Smith, Jeremy M. Carr, Gregory S. Tschumper

Faculty and Student Publications

c 2019 by the authors A recent computational analysis of the stabilizing intramolecular OH···O contact in 1,2-dialkyl-2,3-epoxycyclopentanol diastereomers has been extended to thiiriane, aziridine and phosphirane analogues. Density functional theory (DFT), second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and CCSD(T) coupled-cluster computations with simple methyl and ethyl substituents indicate that electronic energies of the cis isomers are lowered by roughly 3 to 4 kcal mol−1 when the OH group of these cyclopentanol systems forms an intramolecular contact with the O, S, N or P atom on the adjacent carbon. The results also suggest that S and P can participate in these stabilizing …

Wind-Induced Ground Motion: Dynamic Model And Non-Uniform Structure For Ground, Mohammad Mohammadi, Craig J. Hickey, Richard Raspet, Vahid Naderyan Jan 2019

Wind-Induced Ground Motion: Dynamic Model And Non-Uniform Structure For Ground, Mohammad Mohammadi, Craig J. Hickey, Richard Raspet, Vahid Naderyan

Faculty and Student Publications

Wind-induced ground vibrations are a source of noise in seismic surveys. In a previous study, a wind-ground coupling theory was developed to predict the power spectral density (PSD) of ground motions caused by wind perturbations on the ground surface. The prediction was developed using a superposition of the point source response of an elastic isotropic homogeneous medium deforming quasi-statically with the statistical description of the wind-induced pressure fluctuations on the ground. Model predictions and field measurements were in agreement for the normal component of the displacement but under predicted the horizontal component. In this paper, two generalizations are investigated to …

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019, University of Nis. All rights reserved. Zagreb indices and their modified versions of a molecular graph originate from many practical problems such as two dimensional quantitative structure-activity (2D QSAR) and molecular chirality. Nowadays, they have become important invariants which can be used to characterize the properties of graphs from different aspects. Let Vkn (or Ekn respectively) be a set of graphs of n vertices with vertex connectivity (or edge connectivity respectively) at most k. In this paper, we explore some properties of the modified first and second multiplicative Zagreb indices of graphs in Vkn and Ekn. By using …

Electro- And Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction And Thermal Isomerization Of Highly Strained Tricyclocompounds, Weiwei Yang Jan 2019

Electro- And Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction And Thermal Isomerization Of Highly Strained Tricyclocompounds, Weiwei Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anthracene-bridged dinuclear rhenium complexes are reported for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to carbon monoxide (CO). Related by hindered rotation of each rhenium active site to either side of the anthracene bridge cis and trans conformers have been isolated and characterized. Electrochemical studies reveal distinct mechanisms whereby the cis conformer operates via cooperative bimetallic CO2 activation and conversion and the trans conformer reduces CO2 through well-established single-site and bimolecular pathways analogous to Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl. Higher turnover frequencies are observed for the cis conformer (35.3 s−1) relative to the trans conformer (22.9 s−1) with both outperforming Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl (11.1 s−1). Photocatalytic …

Cognitive Influences On Preschoolers’ And Adults’ Eyewitness Memory In Response To Misleading Questions, Tonya M. Vandenbrink

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated cognitive influences on the malleability of memory for an eyewitness event, specifically focusing on age, executive function, and divided attention. Preschoolers (3- to 5-year-olds) and adults completed an executive function (EF) battery, witnessed an event either under divided attention (DA) or full attention (FA), following this, participants were asked a series of questions, the majority of which were misleading from the Video Suggestibility Scale for Children. This study supports previous findings that children are more suggestible than adults to misleading questions. However, there was no influence of EF on suggestibility in either children or adults. Lastly, …

Ni And Au Transition Metal Complexes In The Photocatalytic Co2 Reduction Reaction, Shakeyia Davis Jan 2019

Ni And Au Transition Metal Complexes In The Photocatalytic Co2 Reduction Reaction, Shakeyia Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The production of renewable fuels by the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy is a challenge. Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to usable fuel precursors are approaches to overcoming this challenge. The two-electron reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide is an appealing process because CO can be used as a commodity chemical in industrial processes. Many molecular CO2 reduction catalysts have been reported and commonly use expensive late transition metals. These systems are inspired by natural photosynthesis and generally combine a photosensitizer, a catalyst, and a sacrificial electron donor. This work focuses nickel and gold complexes as …

The Development Of Novel Rhenium- And Copper-Based Molecular Catalysts For Applications In Energy Conversion Chemistry, Joseph Michael Lee Jan 2019

The Development Of Novel Rhenium- And Copper-Based Molecular Catalysts For Applications In Energy Conversion Chemistry, Joseph Michael Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the Industrial Revolution, the consumption of fossil fuels has increased dramatically worldwide. The combustion of fossil fuels leads to the generation of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, but also a C1 feedstock that could be utilized for the generation of renewable fuels and commodity chemicals. However, CO2 is chemically inert and typically demands strong chemical reductants or very negative potentials before it undergoes conversion into reduced carbon products. The desire to carry out CO2 conversion in the presence of water presents a significant challenge, as protons may be reduced to hydrogen gas rather than facilitating …

Structured interviews were conducted with nine faculty in four community colleges across the state to determine conditions that helped or hindered faculty in their implementation of content learned in online professional development courses on credit-bearing courses they would later teach. Analysis of faculty transcripts indicate faculty …

Survey Of Biosynthetic Gene Clusters From Sequenced Myxobacteria And Analysis Of Potential Metabolic Diversity, Katherine C. Gregory Jan 2019

Survey Of Biosynthetic Gene Clusters From Sequenced Myxobacteria And Analysis Of Potential Metabolic Diversity, Katherine C. Gregory

Honors Theses

The importance of natural product discovery to society is undeniable as natural products have seemingly infinite applications, particularly in regard to pharmacological use as antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, anticancer and immunosuppressive agents. The search for new therapeutics and other new chemical commodities thus grows simultaneously with antibiotic resistance and commercial pressure on pharmaceutical research. However, the increasingly common phenomenon of natural product rediscovery continues to inhibit advancement in this field. We contend that the likelihood of rediscovery can be predicted by taxonomic distance between the bacteria in question and previously studied bacteria. That is, our data supports a correlation between chemical …

Acoustic Radiation Force On A Fluid To Fluid Boundary By Phase Plate Focused Ultrasound, Robert Lee Lirette Jan 2019

Acoustic Radiation Force On A Fluid To Fluid Boundary By Phase Plate Focused Ultrasound, Robert Lee Lirette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the physics and applications of the ultrasonic radiation force at the interface between two immiscible fluids were investigated. These studies were performed using low-profile discrete-stepped lenses to the modify the phase of the incident radiation generating multiple field morphologies. In its first application to acoustics, a fraxicon lens was developed to approximate the field generated by an axicon. This type of lens creates a minimally diffractive Bessel beam and long depth of focus that is useful in ultrasonic imaging, therapy, and non-destructive evaluation techniques. Fields modified by fraxicon, Fresnel, and axicon lenses were characterized experimentally by scanning …

Generalized Radial Transport Model For Interpreting Convergent Flow Tracer Tests In Fractured Rock, Md Lal Mamud Jan 2019

Generalized Radial Transport Model For Interpreting Convergent Flow Tracer Tests In Fractured Rock, Md Lal Mamud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The double-porosity Generalized Radial Transport (GRT) model is an extension of the generalized radial flow approach developed for hydraulic test interpretation. In both approaches, a flow dimension characterizes the change in flow area versus radial distance from the borehole. The GRT model collapses to a 1D, radial, and spherical advection dispersion equation (ADE) for integer flow dimensions of 1, 2, and 3, respectively. And, the model also transforms to sub-linear, sub-radial, sub-spherical and eventually transform to super-spherical transport model for non-integer flow dimension, n of 0 < n < 1, 1 < n < 2, 2 < n < 3 and n >3 respectively. Non-integer flow dimensions, especially sub-radial, are commonly reported from pumping tests in …

Cramer Type Moderate Deviations For Random Fields And Mutual Information Estimation For Mixed-Pair Random Variables, Aleksandr Beknazaryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we first study Cramer type moderate deviation for partial sums of random fields by applying the conjugate method. In 1938 Cramer published his results on large deviations of sums of i.i.d. random variables after which a lot of research has been done on establishing Cramer type moderate and large deviation theorems for different types of random variables and for various statistics. In particular results have been obtained for independent non-identically distributed random variables for the sum of independent random to estimate the mutual information between two random variables. The estimates enjoy a central limit theorem under some …
