Nested Adaptation Of Mcmc Algorithms, Dao Nguyen, Perry De Valpine, Yves Atchade, Daniel Turek, Nicholas Michaud, Christopher Paciorek

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 International Society for Bayesian Analysis Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are ubiquitous tools for simulation-based inference in many fields but designing and identifying good MCMC samplers is still an open question. This paper introduces a novel MCMC algorithm, namely, Nested Adaptation MCMC. For sampling variables or blocks of variables, we use two levels of adaptation where the inner adaptation optimizes the MCMC performance within each sampler, while the outer adaptation explores the space of valid kernels to find the optimal samplers. We provide a theoretical foundation for our approach. To show the generality and usefulness of the …

Load-Balancing Rendezvous Approach For Mobility-Enabled Adaptive Energy-Efficient Data Collection In Wsns, Jian Zhang, Jian Tang, Zhonghui Wang, Feng Wang, Gang Yu

Faculty and Student Publications

Copyright © 2020 KSII The tradeoff between energy conservation and traffic balancing is a dilemma problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). By analyzing the intrinsic relationship between cluster properties and long distance transmission energy consumption, we characterize three node sets of the cluster as a theoretical foundation to enhance high performance of WSNs, and propose optimal solutions by introducing rendezvous and Mobile Elements (MEs) to optimize energy consumption for prolonging the lifetime of WSNs. First, we exploit an approximate method based on the transmission distance from the different node to an ME to select suboptimal Rendezvous Point (RP) on the …

© 2013 IEEE. Employing heavy conventional encryption algorithms in communications suffers from added overhead and processing time delay; and in wireless communications, in particular, suffers from severe performance deterioration (avalanche effect) due to fading. Consequently, a tremendous reduction in data throughput and increase in complexity and time delay may occur especially when information traverse resource-limited devices as in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. To overcome these drawbacks, efficient lightweight encryption algorithms have been recently proposed in literature. One of those, that is of particular interest, requires using conventional encryption only for the first block of data in a given frame being transmitted. …

Cooperative Relay Selection For Load Balancing With Mobility In Hierarchical Wsns: A Multi-Armed Bandit Approach, Jian Zhang, Jian Tang, Feng Wang Jan 2020

Cooperative Relay Selection For Load Balancing With Mobility In Hierarchical Wsns: A Multi-Armed Bandit Approach, Jian Zhang, Jian Tang, Feng Wang

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2013 IEEE. Energy efficiency is the major concern in hierarchical wireless sensor networks(WSNs), where the major energy consumption originates from radios for communication. Due to notable energy expenditure of long-range transmission for cluster members and data aggregation for Cluster Head (CH), saving and balancing energy consumption is a tricky challenge in WSNs. In this paper, we design a CH selection mechanism with a mobile sink (MS) while proposing relay selection algorithms with multi-user multi-armed bandit (UM-MAB) to solve the problem of energy efficiency. According to the definition of node density and residual energy, we propose a conception referred to …

© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Histone deacetylases (HDAC) are being targeted for a number of diseases such as cancer, inflammatory disease, and neurological disorders. Within this family of 18 isozymes, HDAC4 is a prime target for glioma, one of the most aggressive brain tumors reported. Thus, the development of HDAC4 inhibitors could present a novel therapeutic route for glioma. In this work, molecular docking studies on cyclopropane hydroxamic acid derivatives identified five novel molecular interactions to the HDAC4 receptor that could be harnessed to enhance inhibitor binding. Thus, design guidelines for the optimization of potent HDAC4 …

A Berry-Esseen Bound Of Order P1√ N For Martingales, Songqi Wu, Xiaohui Ma, Hailin Sang, Xiequan Fan

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved. Renz [13] has established a rate of convergence 1/pn in the central limit theorem for martingales with some restrictive conditions. In the present paper a modification of the methods, developed by Bolthausen [2] and Grama and Haeusler [6], is applied for obtaining the same convergence rate for a class of more general martingales. An application to linear processes is discussed.

Two Symmetric And Computationally Efficient Gini Correlations, Courtney Vanderford, Yongli Sang, Xin Dang Jan 2020

Two Symmetric And Computationally Efficient Gini Correlations, Courtney Vanderford, Yongli Sang, Xin Dang

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 Courtney Vanderford et al., published by De Gruyter. Standard Gini correlation plays an important role in measuring the dependence between random variables with heavy-tailed distributions. It is based on the covariance between one variable and the rank of the other. Hence for each pair of random variables, there are two Gini correlations and they are not equal in general, which brings a substantial difficulty in interpretation. Recently, Sang et al (2016) proposed a symmetric Gini correlation based on the joint spatial rank function with a computation cost of O(n2) where n is the sample size. In this paper, …

Comparing The Variability Of Natural Sand To The Variability Of Sand Containing A Simulant Land Mine, Anna Marie Mcwhirter Jan 2020

Comparing The Variability Of Natural Sand To The Variability Of Sand Containing A Simulant Land Mine, Anna Marie Mcwhirter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the relationship between excitation sources, buried target (i.e., buried hazard, land mine, acoustic article) response, and soil properties is fundamental to improve laser-ground-vibration sensing methods. This project investigates the natural soil’s behavior under acoustic stimuli and compares soil behavior with a buried target through geostatistical methods. Vibrational velocity of sand is measured with an LDV in a confined box filled with and without a buried target. Geostatistical calculations were performed on standardized data (e.g., background velocity and with-target velocity) sets to observe spatial variability. The standardized background velocity is mean 0 and variance of 1, while the addition of …

This dissertation in practice (DiP) studies the relationship between the receipt of the Mississippi Higher Education Legislative Plan for Needy Students (MS-HELP) Grant and cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the beginning of their graduating term among graduating senior students at the University of Mississippi (UM). This study relies on the metric of Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is a dollar amount generated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) designed to measure the amount of money a household can reasonably be expected to contribute to higher education. The MS-HELP Grant is a need-based grant provided by the …

Novel Ophthalmic Formulations For Improved Natamycin Delivery In Fungal Infections Of The Eye., Akash Vijay Patil Jan 2020

Novel Ophthalmic Formulations For Improved Natamycin Delivery In Fungal Infections Of The Eye., Akash Vijay Patil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natamycin (NT) is a front-line drug in the management of ocular fungal infections (OFI). An ophthalmic marketed NT suspension (Natacyn®) is currently the only FDA approved medication prescribed in the pharmacotherapy of OFI. Current NT pharmacotherapy requires frequent topical administration (every hour or 2-hours over 6-8 times in a day) due to it being instilled as eye-drops. This leads to higher precorneal losses and subsequent poor permeation and bioavailability. Therefore, in this research study, alternative ocular formulations of NT were investigated with an intent to improve precorneal retention and corneal permeation in comparison to Natacyn®. Chapter 1 discusses various aspects …

Simulation Analysis Of Bluetooth Scanning Systems, George Humphrey Jan 2020

Simulation Analysis Of Bluetooth Scanning Systems, George Humphrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We develop and present a simulation program to investigate the failure probability of a scanning job conducted by a Bluetooth Low-Energy scanner on a group of items. Each item is outfitted with a BLE device and are sorted into large, batch sizes to be moved into the scanning area. The BLE device broadcasts packets, known as advertisements, to the scanning system. The rate at which the advertisements broadcast is determined by its interadvertisement time, which is the sum between a fixed advertising interval and a pseudo-random advertising delay. The objective is to determine the optimal interadvertisement time that minimizes the …

Acoustic Modeling Of A Uas For Use In A Hostile Fire Detection System, Keegan Kurpakus Jan 2020

Acoustic Modeling Of A Uas For Use In A Hostile Fire Detection System, Keegan Kurpakus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) usage has continually increased in recent years for both recreational and military applications. One particular military application being researched is utilizing a UAS as a host platform for Hostile Fire Detection Systems (HFDS), with particular interest being focused on multi-rotor drone platforms. The type of HFDS considered in this work is based upon acoustic sensors. An acoustic based HFDS utilizes an array of microphones to measure acoustic data and then applies signal processing algorithms to determine if a transient signal is present and if present then estimates the direction from which the sound arrived. The main …

Admission Officers' Perceptions Of Implicit Bias In The Admission Process, Christi Denise Hardy Jan 2020

Admission Officers' Perceptions Of Implicit Bias In The Admission Process, Christi Denise Hardy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although they are not involved in the decision making process, admission officers at institutions of higher learning could have a significant effect on the admission process. For the purposes of this research, admission officers are defined as the primary personnel assisting applicants to complete their applications through the collection of applications, fees, essays, transcripts, test scores, and other supplemental documents required by the institution for admission consideration. More specifically, their implicit biases could significantly affect the admission process. Research on implicit biases is on the rise, and studies investigating this issue in health care and hiring practices are abundant. Implicit …

Topics In Analytic And Combinatorial Number Theory, Zhenchao Ge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I introduce some results that I have proved (collaboratively and independently) in analytic number theory and additive combinatorics. In analytic number theory, I study certain continuous and discrete mean value estimates for the Z-function associated to a Dirichlet L-functions. These problems lead naturally to an investigation of certain Gauss type sums which are studied in some depth. This is joint work with Jonathan W. Bober and Micah B. Milinovich. In additive combinatorics, I study two problems on sumsets. This is joint work with Thai Hoang Le.
