Leading Edge, Seth Michael Thibodaux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I was introduced to the airplane at a young age through my father. Since that time I have been obsessed with airplanes. Wanting to be like my father in my youth, I became interested in the construction of these machines. I would spend hours working in the shop with my dad on airplanes and learning the specific structures that made up all sorts of different aircrafts. As I grew older I became fascinated with the history of aviation and where the idea of flight came from. It was this passion and knowledge that led me to my current body of …

Pocket Monsters And Pirate Treasure: Fantasy And Social Platforms In The 21st Century, Jacob Waalk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

POCKET MONSTERS AND PIRATE TREASURE: FANTASY AND SOCIAL PLATFORMS IN THE 21ST CENTURY is an anthropology project examining media, fantasy, ideology, and social groups in order to build a better foundation for the ways in which economic and social changes influence social networking, popular media, and values by using the anime-manga subculture as an example. The thesis draws from three major theorists: Thomas LaMarre, Anne Allison, and Ian Condry as well as major anthropological theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu. As an ethnography, the project was split into two sections: one consisting of interviews with eight anime-manga subculture participants drawn primarily …

The Effects Of Clinorotation In The Host Plant, Medicago Truncatula, And Its Microbial Symbionts, Ariel Dauzart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this research was to understand mutualistic relationships between plants and endophytic microbes under the influence of an altered gravity vector. Understanding the outcome of the plant-microbe symbiosis in altered gravity is vital to developing life support systems for long distance space travel and colonization of other planets. This research utilized the model tripartite relationship among Medicago truncatula–Sinorhizobium meliloti–Rhizophagus irregularis. Plants were inoculated with rhizobial bacteria (S. meliloti), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (R. irregularis), both microbes, or none (microbial control), and placed on a rotating clinostat for 28 d. Vertical and horizontal static controls were also performed. Plant development …

The Influence Of Casual Footwear On Human Balance, Samuel J. Wilson Jan 2015

The Influence Of Casual Footwear On Human Balance, Samuel J. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Falls are the third leading cause of unintentional death in homes and communities in the United States, causing 27,800 fatalities in 2012. The ability to maintain postural control is an essential part of activities of daily living (ADLs). However, recent types of casual footwear may be putting the body’s postural control system at a functional disadvantage, predisposing wearers to the risk of a fall. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects three forms of casual footwear (thong style flip-flops (FF), clog style Crocs® (CC), and Vibram® Five-Fingers (MIN)) have on postural control following a one mile walk …

Visual Phallacies, John Howard Cummings Jan 2015

Visual Phallacies, John Howard Cummings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Roland Barthes wrote that only after removing all of the author's intentions and traces can a work of art truly be perceived by viewers fairly (Barthes). A viewer's perception of the world is influenced by his or her individual subjective history, which is the product of his or her own experiences. But as the author of ceramic work, my influence is ever-present. Clay records every push, pull, spank, squeeze, and poke. It fully records its physical history and as well as my actions upon it. This thesis exhibition asks the question: Can a viewer de-contextualize familiar-but-contentious subject matter and be …

Discovery Of Alternative Artemisinin Binding Sites In Plasmodium Falciparum Atpase-6, Shuneize Elizabeth Slater

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Malaria is a fatal yet preventable and treatable disease. It is commonly spread through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Malaria parasites belong to the Plasmodium genus and can be caused by the falciparum, malariae, ovale, vivax, and knowlesi species. Artemisinin is an endoperoxide lactone extracted from qinghaosu (Artemisia annua L. or sweet wormwood). It and its derivatives possess uncharacteristically rapid action against Plasmodium falciparum. Artemisinin is unique in its effectiveness in deadly cerebral malaria. The endoperoxide bridge is crucial for its antimalarial activity; however, how it aids in killing the parasite is unknown. While there are multiple suggested …

Analysis Of Pervious Concrete As A Stormwater Management Tool Using Swmm Modeling, Liya Eshetu Abera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation flows over the ground. Increase in impervious land cover due to urbanization causes excess stormwater runoff and affects the quantity and quality of water bodies. The use of low impact development (lid) controls is highly recommended to reduce the excess volume of stormwater runoff. Lid controls include infiltration techniques such as pervious pavements, evaporation, and storage techniques to reduce the volume of runoff. In this study, an analysis is done for the performance of pervious concrete pavement located at the University of Mississippi Law School parking area. The law school was constructed in 2010 and …

Pathogen Indicator Monitoring In The Ross Barnett Reservoir, Hannie Quay Parker Capps

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Man-made reservoirs are often used for both water supply and recreation. The Ross Barnett Reservoir in central Mississippi, a 33,000-acre man-made lake, provides drinking water to the city of Jackson, MS, and forty-eight surrounding communities. Further, an estimated 2.5 million people visit the Reservoir each year for recreational purposes, including boating, fishing, water-skiing, and swimming. Protecting the water quality in the Reservoir is important for these visitors and inhabitants along the shoreline, and for these reasons, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected it as a Priority Watershed in Mississippi. Presently, there is a concern regarding recent data collected that …

Exploring The Use Of Criminal Background Checks In Higher Education: Perceptions Of Leaders At Four Institutions Of Higher Education In Mississippi, Tiffany Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Criminal background checks as a requisite for employment is not a new idea, specifically when recruiting for security sensitive job positions. In recent years, this practice has become increasingly widespread within the workforce, not only with businesses, but also with institutions of higher education. Four institutions of higher education within the state of Mississippi were randomly selected for this qualitative, phenomenological study. The researcher sought an answer to the following question: how has the use of criminal background checks transformed the nature of recruitment and hiring on university campuses? To answer this question, the researcher explored historical practices at each …
