Accurate chemical compositions of star-forming regions provide a critical diagnostic tool for characterizing the star formation history and gas flows that regulate galaxy formation. However, the abundance discrepancy factor (ADF) between measurements derived from the “direct” optical electron temperature (Te ) method and those from recombination lines (RLs) introduces a ∼0.2 dex systematic uncertainty in the oxygen abundance. The degree of uncertainty for other elements is unknown. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of O++ and N+ ion abundances using optical and far-infrared (far-IR) spectra of a star-forming region within the nearby dwarf galaxy Haro 3, which exhibits …

Brain glucose dysregulation is shared by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and diabetes, but whether it arises from central or peripheral mechanisms remains unclear. Amylin, a pancreatic hormone, normally supports CNS cAMP-PKA signaling, metabolism and memory; however, prediabetes-associated hypersecretion disrupts this balance. Using human amylin-inducible mice, we show that toggling amylin secretion during metabolic stress bidirectionally regulates brain glycolysis and function. Excess amylin overactivates cAMP-PKA signaling, suppressing glycolysis and inducing Tau-Ser214 phosphorylation, two core features of AD pathology. This state is accompanied by activation of the amino acid starvation response, Tau-T231 hyperphosphorylation, pTau-Aβ coupling, neuroinflammation and memory deficit. In contrast, reducing amylin …

Taylor Dispersion In Variable-Density, Variable-Viscosity Pulsatile Flows, Prabakaran Rajamanickam, Adam D. Weiss Mar 2026

Taylor Dispersion In Variable-Density, Variable-Viscosity Pulsatile Flows, Prabakaran Rajamanickam, Adam D. Weiss

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

The phenomenon of Taylor or shear-induced dispersion of a non-passive scalar field in a pulsatile pipe flow is investigated, accounting for the scalar field's influence on fluid density and transport coefficients. By employing multiple scale analysis, an effective one-dimensional, unsteady mixing problem for the scalar field is obtained, which includes the diffusion coefficient for shear-induced dispersion. The resulting governing equations are applicable to a range of scalar transport problems in pulsatile pipe flows.

Methane Emissions From Underground Coal Mines, Marcelo Guzman, Thomas Parris, Stephen Greb, Cortland F. Eble, Sean Bailey

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Methane emissions from Kentucky underground coal mines were measured using near-infrared spectrometers deployed on a vehicle, an airplane, and a small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS), offering insights into the effectiveness of these methods under real-world conditions. From 2021–2022, surveys covered 14 active, 4 inactive, and 4 abandoned mines across Kentucky’s coal-producing basins. Vehicle-based surveys at 13 active mines detected methane anomalies at 9 sites with anomaly lengths spanning tens to hundreds of meters and peak emissions of 665 ± 229 kg h–1 from two Cardinal mine fans. Airborne GHGSat surveys identified anomalies at 3 sites, including a peak of 1062 …

Whereas organizational network studies infer employees’ agentic desires through observed network changes, we capture desires to collaborate more closely with co-workers directly through a survey. We argue that formal structures create workflow dependencies between employees as they gather others’ inputs to complete their tasks, and individuals desire to alter their networks to manage those dependencies using the following two main collaborative approaches: (1) collaborating more intensely with existing formal workflow network partners; and (2) engaging in bypassing approaches with specific partners outside of their prescribed formal workflow. We found that employees pursued a tie-strengthening approach with formal partners they already …

Context. Nearby galaxies exhibit a variety of structures, including so-called central or (circum-)nuclear rings that are similar to the Milky Way (MW) Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). These rings are common in barred galaxies and can be gas-rich and highly star-forming. Aims. We aim to study the molecular gas content and star formation rate of central rings within nearby galaxies and link them to global galaxy properties, especially the bar morphology. Methods. We utilized 1″(≲100 pc) resolution CO(2–1) observations from the PHANGS-ALMA survey, visually identifying 20 central rings and determine their properties. For 14 of these rings, MUSE observations tracing star …

Sacbe 1 And Classic Maya Urban Culture, Traci Ardren, Scott R. Hutson, Travis W. Stanton, Patrick Rohrer, Justin P. Lowry

Anthropology Faculty Publications

One of the most significant engineering accomplishments of Maya civilization is Sacbe 1, a raised road connecting the ancient urban centers of Yaxuna and Coba. Using new lidar data in concert with excavation, epigraphic inscriptions, and landscape reconnaissance, we show that settlement and an urban experience emanated westward from Coba along the sacbe. The leaders of Coba - in particular, an ambitious seventh-century queen - used the sacbe to expand the political and cultural influence of their dynasty into the center of the peninsula while securing territory and resources. Gaps in the sacbe, precise delineation of its many curves, and …

Understanding contact-induced damage is of paramount importance in the analysis of the lifespan and performance of surface coatings. In this work, we investigate the effects of dopants and interlayers on the structural durability of diamond-like carbon coatings (DLCs) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) coatings on stainless steel via microscratch tests. The analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) survey spectra and Raman spectra of the DLCs shows that the ratio of sp2/sp3 (i.e., the intensity ratio of sp2 to sp3 obtained via XPS) is proportional to ID/IG, where ID and …

Fructokinase (FRK) initiates fructose phosphorylation, channeling carbon into central metabolic pathways, yet its functional diversity and regulatory networks in C4 cereals remain poorly understood. Here, we performed a comprehensive pan-genome analysis of the FRK gene family in foxtail millet (Setaria italica), identifying 697 SiFRKs across 110 accessions and revealing extensive presence–absence variation shaped by evolution and domestication. Among nine characterized members in the reference genome, SiFRK4 exhibited broad and high expression, a diurnal rhythm, and substantial natural variation. Biochemical assays confirmed its fructokinase activity in vitro. We discovered a novel physical interaction between SiFRK4 and the key photoreceptor Phytochrome …

Synthesis And Structures Of Ru(Ii)-P-Cymene Sandwich Complexes With Electron-Withdrawing Cyclopentadienyl Ligands, Uttam R. Pokharel, Sean Parkin, John P. Selegue

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A modular synthetic route has been developed to prepare a new series of cationic ruthenium(II) complexes with electron-withdrawing 1,2-diacylcyclopentadienyl ligands. The 2-acyl-6-hydroxyfulvenes were synthesized from cyclopentadienide and acyl chlorides and converted to Tl(I) cyclopentadienyl salts using Tl2SO4/KOH. Transmetalation with [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 followed by PF6 metathesis gives the complexes [Ru{η5-1,2-C5H3(CO–R)2}(η6-p-cymene)][PF6] (R = t-Bu, p-Tol, p-ClC6H4, p-IC6H4) in moderate to high yields. The new compounds were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy; mass spectrometry …

Abstract – Introduction: Intermittent hypoxemia (IH) is common in preterm infants and linked to brain injury. S100B is a glial-derived protein that rises early after neural injury and can be measured noninvasively in urine. We evaluated the relationship between IH burden and urinary S100B in preterm infants of ≤32 weeks’ gestation. Methods: Preterm infants of ≤32 weeks’ gestation were prospectively enrolled. Oxygen saturation was continuously monitored, and IH profiles were quantified using validated algorithms. Urine S100B was measured by ultrasensitive immunoassay and normalized for urinary creatinine. Infants with severe intraventricular hemorrhage were excluded. Weighted Spearman correlations examined associations between IH …

All-inorganic lead halide perovskites, specifically CsPbX3 (X = I, Cl, Br), have attracted significant attention over the past few years due to their immense potential in optoelectronic devices, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs), light emitting diodes, photodetectors, and solar cells. Currently, most available synthesis techniques rely on high temperatures, inert environments, and toxic non-polar solvents, with limiting scalability and environmental compatibility. Herein, we present a facile, room-temperature, and partially green approach for synthesizing CsPbBr3-based particles via a biphasic solvent system comprising non-polar octadecene (ODE) layered over deionized water. By simply tuning the volume ratio of DI …

Despite the promise of fuel cells as sustainable energy conversion technologies, their widespread adoption is hindered by the high cost of platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts, particularly for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. Here, we report copper-based single-atom catalysts (Cu-SACs) as cost-effective non-PGM alternatives for ORR. The catalysts were synthesized via simple pyrolysis of pyrene-derived amine-terminated graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in the presence of nitrogen and metal precursors. The abundant nitrogen functionality in GQDs effectively stabilized isolated Cu atoms during their conversion to porous carbon. A subsequent acid-washing step yielded a high density of atomically dispersed …

Improving the dispersion of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) within organic semiconductor (OSC) matrices remains critical for advancing hybrid nanocomposite optoelectronic technologies. This study investigates how film-deposition kinetics influence the morphology of TIPS-tetracene (TIPS-Tc):PbS QD blends, comparing spin-coating and blade coating for QDs ligated with either native oleic acid (OA) or a matched carboxylic acid functionalised tetracene analogue (TET-CA). Films spun-cast at low spin speeds form highly crystalline TIPS-Tc domains with highly aggregated QDs. Increased spin speed induces a deeper solvent quench, driving rapid TIPS-Tc nucleation while kinetically arresting QD diffusion, which improves QD dispersion within the crystalline matrix. TIPS-Tc:PbS-OA blends …

Stress-Induced Bandgap Modulation In Semiconductor Quantum Wells, Saurabh Singh, Fuqian Yang Feb 2026

Stress-Induced Bandgap Modulation In Semiconductor Quantum Wells, Saurabh Singh, Fuqian Yang

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Strained semiconductor quantum wells have been an active area of research for more than three decades. However, a major part of the reported literature has shown a core focus on the theoretical and experimental investigations of their energy band structures under different internal and external perturbations, taking strain parameters as the basis and studying their resulting effects on various optoelectrical properties of the strained quantum wells. However, since stress parameters can be measured more easily and with an enhanced level of accuracy compared to strain parameters, developing a stress-based analytical framework offers distinct advantages. This study focuses on the theoretical …

The APOE-ε4 allele is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. However, APOE-ε4 is not deterministic, highlighting the need to identify additional genetic and environmental factors. APOE-ε4 has been linked to accelerated cognitive decline, so we sought to investigate genetic factors that modify APOE-ε4–associated cognitive decline. We conduct cross-ancestry APOE-ε4-stratified and interaction GWAS using harmonized cognitive data from 32,778 participants, including 29,354 non-Hispanic White and 3,424 non-Hispanic Black individuals. Our primary outcome is late-life cognition, measured using harmonized composite scores for memory, executive function, and language, modeled as continuous traits reflecting both normative cognitive aging and disease-related decline. …
