World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Legacy Rule Implementation Deadlines: Examining the Agency vs. Industry Disconnect Authors Mr. Lucas Carr - United States - Ramboll Mr. Eric Tlachac - United States - Ramboll Mr. Brian Hennings - United States - Ramboll Abstract In May of 2023 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published a proposed draft expansion of the 2015 CCR Rule (40 C.F.R. Part 257, Subpart D) that would effectively remove the exemption of legacy CCR units. These units are broadly defined as CCR impoundments and landfills located at power stations that had closed prior to October 15, 2015, inactive landfills at operating power …

Wicking Wells - A Novel Method To Remediate Dissolved Solids In Groundwater, Shane Mcdonald

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Wicking Wells, a new novel method to remediate dissolved solids in groundwater Authors Mr. Shane McDonald - United States - HDR Abstract A newly patented method for removing total dissolved solids (TDS) from groundwater has been developed at HDR. This method, called ‘wicking wells’, uses capillary media positioned to be just touching the water table in a purpose-designed well. The purpose-designed well taps the most contaminated groundwater, focusing on the highest TDS. The capillary media wicks the water to above the water table where heated dry air is passed across the media to evaporate the water. The produced water vapor …

A newly patented method for removing total dissolved solids (TDS) from groundwater has been developed at HDR. This method, called ‘wicking wells’, uses capillary media positioned to be just touching the water table in a purpose-designed well. The well taps the most contaminated groundwater, focusing on the highest TDS. The capillary media wicks the water to above the water table where heated dry air is passed across the media to evaporate the water. The newly-moistened air is exhausted to the atmosphere and any dissolved solids will precipitate and be captured on the capillary media. In this way, the most onerous …

The durability of mortars and concrete with a high volume of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) substituted by a fly ash calcium sulfoaluminate binder Authors Dr. Peeter Paaver - Estonia - University of tartu Abstract The durability of mortars and concrete with a high volume of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) substituted by a fly ash calcium sulfoaluminate binder is investigated in this study. The utilization of circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers imposes limitations on the recycling of fly ash due to its low combustion temperature. This low temperature inhibits the formation of reactive calcium silicate minerals and diminishes the cementation …

Coal Combustion Residual Characterization For Beneficial Use, Ross Gorman May 2024

Coal Combustion Residual Characterization For Beneficial Use, Ross Gorman

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Coal Combustion Residual Characterization for Beneficial Use Authors Mr. Jimmy Knowles - United States - The SEFA Group, LLC Abstract Characterization of coal ash impoundments is a critical early step for a successful harvesting and beneficiation project. Thorough characterization of a CCR impoundment is necessary to determine the material's suitability for beneficial use. It is also necessary to determine which type of beneficiation is required and the design specifications of the beneficiation technology system. Pond or Basin Characterization is vital to design a safe harvesting or excavation plan that optimizes beneficiation and use of the material in the impoundment. This …

Paper_A Practical Approach To Manufacturing Sintered Lightweight Aggregates From Unrecycled Waste Coal Ash, Yousif Alqenai, Mo Balapour, Mohammadamin Zooyousefin, Thuy Nguyen

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

The focus of this study was to manufacture sintered lightweight aggregates (LWA) using unrecycled landfill condition waste coal ash (LC-WCA) that has been exposed to a harsh weathering and storage environment for 15-20 years. WCA under field conditions typically consists of an intricate blend of fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag, flue gas desulfurization, cenosphere, sand, rocks, shells, twigs, and various land minerals. This complicated raw material blend obtained from a Pennsylvania landfill underwent characterization to understand its physical and chemical composition. Microscopy revealed LC-WCA composition consisted of 9% field debris (size ≥600 μm), 43% bottom ash (size 600-75 μm), …

Paper_Coal Combustion Residuals – Productive, Reliable, And Sustainable Approaches To Remediation, Dave Donahue, Faizan Chowdhury, Max Swoboda

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Coal combustion residuals (CCRs) are the second-largest waste material in the U.S., behind household garbage. As such, it is vital that CCRs are correctly managed to prevent environmental damage and safeguard human and animal health. With almost 5 billion tons of coal ash stored by utilities at more than 1,000 sites across the U.S. – whether in ponds as a wet slurry or in landfills as dry powder – preventing leaks into waterways or the air is an industry priority. Every day, Xylem’s experts help power plant operators safely manage CCRs by combining decades of on-the-ground expertise with cutting-edge technology …

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

CCR Dewatering – Back to the Basics Authors Dr. Paul Schmall - United States - Keller Abstract The increase in CCR pond closure activity spurred by the EPA’s 2015 rule publication has created a tremendous opportunity to innovate with respect to traditional methods of safely working around and on saturated CCR material. The volume of work and the speed at which it must be completed requires that the industry adapt in order to meet regulatory timelines. One technique that has been successfully implemented is the use of conventional construction dewatering technology to stabilize CCR by reducing and controlling pore pressures. …

Paper_Dry Fgd Byproduct Characteristics And Utilization In China – Development And Trends, Qingfa Su, Muh-Cheng Wu, Jianchun Wang, Cangeng Xu

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Dry FGD process is a major FGD technology other than wet FGD process and has been widely used in China. In the last decade, it has been successfully applied not only to coal-fired power plants, but also to iron and steel sintering and pelleting plants, glass kilns, carbon black, aluminum, catalytic cracking, coking and other industry installations. In contrast to gypsum produced from wet FGD process, characteristics of dry FGD byproducts are often site-specific, depending on source flue gas compositions, unit operations, operating conditions, and other factors. These could affect dry FGD byproduct performance in utilization applications and generated products. …

PVC LINER INTERFACE FRICTION AND SLOPE STABILITY Authors Mr. John Klamut - United States - GAI Consultants, Inc. Mr. Ron Harris - United States - GAI Consultants, Inc. Mr. James Shields - United States - GAI Consultants, Inc. Abstract PVC liners have been used for numerous CCR landfill liner systems. In general, the industry has moved away from the use of PVC liners in favor of HDPE or LLDPE geomembranes. An important reason for this shift is due to the veneer stability of PVC liner systems when compared to HDPE or LLPE geomembrane liner systems. The results of stability analyses …

Ccr Landfills – Part 2: Using A Graphical Interpretation With Model Simulations To Predict Groundwater Elevations During And After Ccr Landfill Construction, Jerry Wylie, Rong Yu

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

State solid waste regulations require the post-settlement bottom elevation of the base liner system of a CCR landfill to be a minimum of 4 feet above the long-term seasonal high (LTSH) groundwater table prior to operation. During landfill sump construction, standing water was observed outside of and within the sump footprint. Because the landfill base liner had been placed, direct groundwater measurements were not feasible by installing piezometers within the sump. Using groundwater elevation data from piezometers outside of the landfill, historical measurements within the landfill near the sump, data from surveys and photogrammetry, and previous groundwater flow model simulations, …
