Application Of Data Science Techniques To Estimate Soluble Alkali Contribution From Fly Ashes For Determination Of Concrete Pore Solution Chemistry, Anol Mukhopadhyay May 2024

Application Of Data Science Techniques To Estimate Soluble Alkali Contribution From Fly Ashes For Determination Of Concrete Pore Solution Chemistry, Anol Mukhopadhyay

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Application of Data Science Techniques to Estimate Soluble Alkali Contribution from Fly Ashes for Determination of Concrete Pore Solution Chemistry Authors Prof. Anol Mukhopadhyay - United States - Texas A&M University Abstract Traditionally, the available alkali (AA) tests following ASTM C 311 were primarily used to qualify Fly Ashes’ (FA) for suitability in Alkali Silica reaction (ASR) mitigation based on a 1.5% Na2Oeq AA limit. However, the test is currently being discontinued due to criticisms stemming from its lack of correlation with the ASR expansions and high operator/laboratory variability of test measurements. Therefore, a Bayesian machine learning model (ML) is …

Proposed Legacy Rule – Groundwater Compliance Nuances And Lessons Learned, Matthew Dagon, Peter Thibodeau May 2024

Proposed Legacy Rule – Groundwater Compliance Nuances And Lessons Learned, Matthew Dagon, Peter Thibodeau

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Proposed CCR compliance timelines for CCR legacy surface impoundments and management units are compressed compared to 2015 CCR Rule deadlines. Site characterization, configuring monitoring well networks, and statistical analysis are critically important in identifying appropriate closure solutions. The regulated community and environmental consultants offered significant comments on the Proposed Rule, emphasizing that legacy sites are inherently complex and will require similar evaluation as 2015 Rule units. The industry is limited in terms of availability of quality consultants, drill rigs, and laboratories, creating constraints in meeting this compressed proposed timeline. Under the proposed Rule, there is less time for site characterization …

Paper_Chemical-Free, High-Volume Leachate Pond Filtration: Commercial Success, Gerard Simon, Jennie Henthorn May 2024

Paper_Chemical-Free, High-Volume Leachate Pond Filtration: Commercial Success, Gerard Simon, Jennie Henthorn

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Several constituents of concern (COC) are problematic for coal ash leachate pond waste management, and even more so with the effluent limitation guidelines continuing to become more stringent. Filtration management of leachate ponds continues to have difficulty with effective removal of metals such as selenium, arsenic and boron to the wastewater discharge allowances. A novel technology has proven success in providing a chemical-free, high-volume alternative to traditional filtration in the coal ash and energy space. The technology meets or exceeds permitted allowances for discharge and is rapidly deployable as a mobile technology in addition to the ability to scale for …

Proposed Ccr Legacy Rule – Making Sense From Chaos, Will Mattingly, Charla Barnes

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

The proposed CCR Legacy Rule poses numerous challenges and constraints related to implementation and compliance. While the proposed aggressive compliance schedule is daunting, utility owners can set themselves up for success and reduce unwanted surprises by performing low risk, desktop level activities prior to the CCR Legacy Rule promulgation. In addition to the anticipated schedule constraints, there are other obvious challenges related to potential unit interpretations, beneficial use, closure standards, asset repurposing, availability of engineering consultants, certified drillers, laboratories, and qualified reviewers and the lack of consideration of risk. These challenges are known industry-wide and are dependent on requirements to …

To aid in the development of more efficient harvesting strategies, research performed in the emerging Geomaterials Testing and Research Laboratory (GTRL) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science (UTC – …

Paper_Collaborative Utilization Of Fly Ash And Desulfurization Wastewater, Xia Wang, Yang Dong, Jinder Jow May 2024

Paper_Collaborative Utilization Of Fly Ash And Desulfurization Wastewater, Xia Wang, Yang Dong, Jinder Jow

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

In order to reduce sulfur dioxide emission in flue gas to meet the national requirement less than 35 mg/m3, the wet desulfurization process is typically used in the coal-fired power plant, resulting in generation of flue-gas desulfurization gypsum and desulfurization wastewater. The wastewater can be re-used or discharged only after water-treatment to meet the relevant industry standard requirements of water quality. This treatment process increases the operation cost. Fly ash is also produced from the coal-fired power plant, mainly used in building materials as a supplementary cementitious material to cement. The objective of this study is to develop fly ash-based …

Coal Ash & the Public – Tell your story before someone else does! Authors Mr. Tim Hancock - United States - Stantec Ms. Melissa Hedgecoth - United States - Tennessee Valley Authority Abstract Nothing travels quite as fast as bad news, and our industry is a convenient target. Technical reports containing 99% good news can become grist for the mill due to a single line or paragraph that feeds a headline, particularly where human health is concerned. Despite data to the contrary, the industry continues to suffer from headlines like: Toxic coal ash: EPA says Alabama doesn't protect public or …

Managing Ash Pond Closure Waters, Philip Benson

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Managing Ash Pond Closure Waters: Technology Selection and Design Considerations Authors Mr. Philip Benson - United States - Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. Abstract The water management issues created by ash pond closure are complex. Dewatering activities can produce large volumes of water that require treatment. Pore water can contain high constituent concentrations due to the long- term contact with ash. Dewatering and stormwater management practices significantly impact the quantity and quality of water that must be treated. The ash has been deposited in the basin over years or even decades, often from diverse sources of coal. The diverse coal sources and …
