Light Nuclei Femtoscopy And Baryon Interactions In 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At Rhic, The Star Collaboration
Light Nuclei Femtoscopy And Baryon Interactions In 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At Rhic, The Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report the measurements of proton-deuteron (š-š) and deuteron-deuteron (š-š) correlation functions in Au+Au collisions at āš NN = 3 GeV using fixed-target mode with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). For the first time, the source size (š šŗ), scattering length (š0), and effective range (š0) are extracted from the measured correlation functions with a simultaneous fit. The spin-averaged š0 for š-š and š-š interactions are determined to be -5.28 ± 0.11(stat.) ± 0.82(syst.) fm and -2.62 ± 0.02(stat.) ± 0.24(syst.) fm, respectively. The measured š-š interaction is consistent with theoretical calculations and low- energy scattering experiment ā¦

Electric-Charge-Dependent Directed Flow Splitting Of Produced Quarks In Au+Au Collisions, The Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report directed flow (š£1) of multistrange baryons (Ī and Ī©) and improved š£1 data for š¾ā, Ģ š, Ģ Ī and š in Au+Au collisions at āš NN =27 and 200 GeV from the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We focus on particles whose constituent quarks are not transported from the incoming nuclei but instead are produced in the collisions. At intermediate impact parameters, we examine quark coalescence behavior for particle combinations with identical quark content, and search for any departure from this behavior (āsplittingā) for combinations having non-identical quark content. Under the assumption of quark ā¦

In heavy-ion collision experiments, the global collectivity of final-state particles can be quantified by anisotropic flow coefficients (vn). The first-order flow coefficient, also referred to as the directed flow (v1 ), describes the collective sideward motion of produced particles and nuclear fragments in heavy-ion collisions. It carries information on the very early stage of the collision, especially at large pseudorapidity (Ī·), where it is believed to be generated during the nuclear passage time. Directed flow therefore probes the onset of bulk collective dynamics during thermalization, providing valuable experimental guidance to models of the pre-equilibrium stage. In 2018, the Event Plane ā¦

Background
Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a relatively uncommon but high mortality form of stroke that can result in long-lasting disability. A better understanding of key neuroinflammatory changes during the early phase (< 72 h) may provide potential avenues of treatment.
Methods
In an attempt to understand these early changes, we recruited 7 aSAH patients for profiling of longitudinal plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins at up to 72 h post injury. We additionally compared this to control plasma obtained previously from healthy elderly volunteers. Using the Alamar Biosciences NULISAseq platform, we obtained a comprehensive picture of early peripheral and central inflammatory changes after injury.

Mutations in the human granulin (GRN) gene are associated with multiple diseases, including dementia disorders such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE). We studied a Grn knockout (Grn-KO) mouse model in order to evaluate a potential therapeutic strategy for these diseases using nicorandil, a commercially available agonist for the ABCC9/Abcc9-encoded regulatory subunit of the āK+ATPā channel that is well-tolerated in humans. Aged (13āmonths) Grn-KO and wild-type (WT) mice were treated as controls or with nicorandil (15āmg/kg/day) in drinking water for 7āmonths, then tested for neurobehavioral ā¦

Introduction: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) face a significant risk of neurodegeneration, and gait variability may serve as a clinical biomarker of neurological health. This longitudinal parent substudy aimed to explore relationships between gait, white matter (WM) integrity, and cognitive function in DS.
Methods: The associations were investigated between magnetic resonance imaging diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), cognition, and self-paced gait data from 22 DS participants (mean age ± SD 37 ± 7.5 years).
Results: DTI measures, such as lower fractional anisotropy (FA) and higher mean diffusivity, were correlated with greater step time variability but not normalized velocities. Lower cognitive scores ā¦

While cerebrovascular dysfunction and reactive astrocytosis are extensively characterized hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, the dynamic relationship between reactive astrocytes and cerebral vessels remains poorly understood. Here, we used jGCaMP8f and two-photon microscopy to investigate calcium signaling in multiple astrocyte subcompartments, concurrent with changes in cerebral arteriole activity, in fully awake 7- to 8-month-old male and female 5xFAD mice, a model for AD-like pathology, and wild-type (WT) littermates. In the absence of movement, spontaneous calcium transients in barrel cortex occurred more frequently in astrocyte somata, processes, and perivascular regions of 5xFAD mice. However, evoked arteriole dilations (in ā¦

Gilead: Municipal Liability For Punitive Damages Under The Fair Housing Act, Robert G. Schwemm
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The 1968 Fair Housing Act (āFHAā) has always been understood to apply to local governments, which have proved to be among the most frequent and significant violators of this law, especially in their opposition to housing of particular value to racial minorities and persons with disabilities. Yet not until the Second Circuitās decision last year in Gilead Community Services, Inc. v. Town of Cromwell did an appellate court approve an FHA-based punitive-damage award against a municipality. Before Gilead, district courts had generally blocked such awards, applying § 1983ās immunities to protect local governments and their officials from the FHAās ā¦

Confronting The Duty To Capitalize In Veil-Piercing, Douglas C. Michael
Confronting The Duty To Capitalize In Veil-Piercing, Douglas C. Michael
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
In corporate law, the doctrine of āpiercing the corporate veilā allows courts to hold shareholders personally liable for corporate obligations. The doctrineāwhich now also applies to entities other than corporationsāhas been widely criticized as imprecise and unworkable. I respond to that criticism in the area of veil-piercing law which remains most intractableāthe case of the tort victim who remains unsatisfied after exhausting corporate assets. Although most commentators have eschewed talk of any duty owed by the business owner to vest the business with sufficient assets, I argue that courts and legislatures should recognizeāconfrontāsuch a duty. I look to negligence law ā¦

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article addresses the application of right of publicity, right of privacy, and trademark law to the problem of deepfakes. It will explore the routine and not so routine ways that personality and persona attributes are exploited in traditional privacy contexts and publicity contexts. It will also examine the use of First Amendment defenses in legal actions traditionally associated with the exploitation of celebrities, sports figures, and other persons under state law theories of name-image-likeness exploitation, as well as and federal trademark law theories of false endorsement and false designation of origin.
Part I provides an introduction and background to ā¦

Networking Among The Human Capitalists: The Organizational Dynamics Of Change And Power In The Large Corporate Law Firm, Alan James Klugel
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Law firms are unique creatures. They are subject to market pressures as well as ethical obligations and professional norms. They are in direct competition with other organizations for both clients and the lawyers necessary to perform work for those clients. They are comprised of lawyers who are simultaneously cooperative and competitive with one another. They are neither hierarchy nor anarchy, neither a collection of independent actors nor an entity under which its employees are subsumed. Instead, they are organizations shaped and reshaped by their members; organized around shared goals, internal contestations and external constraints; and defined by the ties between ā¦

History, Tradition, And Voter Registration, Joshua A. Douglas
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
History and tradition are dominating the Supreme Court, which has invoked history and tradition to curtail some rights, such as abortion, while using it to elevate other rights, such as the right to bear arms. Might history and tradition also cause the Court to strike down new restrictions on the right to vote, even if doing so would cut against the current Courtās narrow protection of voting rights? Disputes over voter registration restrictions will pose that very question. Many states have recently implemented onerous rules on voter registration, especially targeting third-party voter registration organizations. Congress is also debating the SAVE ā¦
The Case Against Surge Pricing, Ramsi A. Woodcock
The Case Against Surge Pricing, Ramsi A. Woodcock
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Surge pricingāusing data and algorithms to raise prices in response to unexpected increases in demandāhas spread across the economy in recent years, from Amazon and Disney World to commuter highways and, of course, Uber, which is infamous for surge pricing rides. Companies claim that surge pricing equilibrates supply and demand, but that is impossible, at least in the short run when demand unexpectedly outstrips supply. What surge pricing really does is to ration existing supply based on ability to pay. That is both distributively unjust and potentially inefficient. It should also be considered a violation of the antitrust laws because ā¦
Gender Disparity In Social Security, Kathryn L. Moore
Gender Disparity In Social Security, Kathryn L. Moore
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Facially neutral, the U.S. Social Security system structurally discriminates against women because it prefers those who successfully fulfill the traditional male breadwinner role rather than the traditional female caregiving role. Overall, women receive lower worker benefits, are much more likely to claim spouse and surviving spouse benefits, and are more dependent on Social Security for their retirement benefits than are men.
This Article assesses Social Securityās disparate treatment of women and how Social Security might be reformed to enhance benefits for women. It begins by providing a broad overview of Social Security benefits. It then discusses how women and couples ā¦
The Migration Of Abolition Theory, Matthew Boaz
The Migration Of Abolition Theory, Matthew Boaz
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Article considers whether and how theories of abolition developed by criminal law scholars are transferrable to the realm of immigration enforcement. A key question is how abolitionist principles might be employed in support of critiques of the United Statesā immigration regulatory regime in the same way that these principles have been deployed in denouncing racialized policing and an injurious, industrialized prison system.
This Article makes two contributions: First, it identifies and illuminates a methodology adopted by critical and decarceral criminal law scholars: (i) denouncing the harms of a structural system, (ii) identifying the normative justification(s) for this system, and ā¦

Kinesiology and Health Promotion Faculty Publications
Knee health constitutes a pivotal determinant of locomotor function and overall mobility throughout the healthspan. Impairments in knee function lead to a series of biomechanical and physiological alterations that pose substantial public health challenges and economic burdens worldwide. This review synthesizes evidence that delineates the complex and multifaceted relationship between knee health and mobility, emphasizing the interplay across various domains in adult populations. Knee health is conceptualized as a dynamic, interconnected system whereby structural integrity, neuromuscular mechanisms, biomechanical adaptations, and functional mobility are intricately interrelated through cascades of mechanistic processes operating across different temporal stages. A comprehensive understanding of these ā¦

Alcohol-induced dysregulation of microglial activity is associated with neuroinflammation, cognitive decline, heightened risk for neurodegenerative diseases, alcohol dependence, and escalation of alcohol drinking. Given the challenge of longitudinally sampling primary microglia, we optimized an in vitro method to differentiate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from rhesus macaque (RM) into induced microglia-like cells (RM-iMGLs). The RM-iMGLs displayed transcriptional profiles distinct from monocyte progenitors and closely resembling primary microglia. Notably, morphological features showed that differentiated RM-iMGLs derived from subjects with chronic alcohol consumption (CAC), while bigger, exhibited a bipolar-like morphology. Additionally, dysregulation in key inflammatory and regulatory markers, along with increased baseline ā¦

Adapting A Mobile Health Intervention To Improve Prep Adherence Among Young Black Msm In Fulton County, Georgia, Kassidy Maust
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) in the southern United States, particularly in Fulton County, Georgia, face disproportionately high rates of HIV and unique structural barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and adherence. Sustained adherence among YBMSM remains low due to intersecting structural, social, and behavioral barriers. To address these disparities, this paper presents an adapted implementation of the evidence-based M-Cubed (Mobile Messaging for Men) mHealth intervention. Prior studies of M-Cubed and similar mHealth interventions have shown promising outcomes in increasing PrEP adherence among Black MSM populations. The adapted intervention integrates culturally tailored messaging specific to behaviors ā¦

Improving End-Of-Life Care: A Nursing Education Initiative, Spring C. Kingsley
DNP Projects
Background: This study addresses the gap in education and training for medical intensive care unit (MICU) nurses regarding the care of hospice patients. The traditional medical model of healthcare prioritizes illness treatment, often leading to inadequate end-of-life support and increased hospitalization during patients' final days. The rise of in-hospital hospice programs, or scatter-bed hospice models, highlights the need for nurses to enhance their skills in providing end-of-life compassionate care. The MICU at the University of Kentuckyās Chandler Hospital serves as a focal point for this initiative, given its role in caring for critically ill patients who require hospice attention.

Purpose/objective
We propose a novel lattice deployment for spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT) treatments. In this approach, a larger diameter high-dose sphere is centrally placed in the bulky tumor mass and surrounded by smaller diameter high-dose spheres.
Materials/methods
Thirty SFRT patients (10 head and neck [HN], 10 abdominal/pelvis, and 10 chest/lung cases) treated with an MLC-based crossfire method were retrospectively analyzed. Eleven differential hole-size lattice patterns were benchmarked against the clinically delivered SFRT plans (1Ā cm diameter cylinders, 2Ā cm spacing) and the standard uniform lattice pattern (1.5Ā cm diameter spheres, 3Ā cm spacing). These patterns varied in core diameter (C: ā¦

Values were further divided into squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma histologies. Probability distributions were fit to histograms using the bootstrapped Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test. Both average and most probable α/β values for cervical cancer were determined. The probability distributions were then applied to three ā¦
Alternative Visions Of Swedish State Feminism, Lukas Bullock
Alternative Visions Of Swedish State Feminism, Lukas Bullock
Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies
Sweden has been lifted as a prominent example of a successful feminist policy enactor, and has built credibility as a humanitarian actor both domestically and transnationally. Simultaneously, intersectionally marginalized groups have attested to patterns of social exclusion and feelings of political disenfranchisement in Swedish society, calling into question Swedenās reputation for feminist exceptionalism. This dissertation project centers on unpacking this dynamic by examining how Swedish gender equality policymaking institutions design and implement feminist policy, and how those efforts are interpreted and contested by intersectionally marginalized groups of Afro-Swedish feminist activists. Drawing from a mixed-methods framework that includes feminist ethnography (interviews, ā¦

This research study examines the challenges Black women encounter when in predominantly white, male academic and professional science settings, where they experience dual discrimination because of their race and gender. These biases perpetuate the negative stereotype that Black women are less competent than white men. This mixed methods study examines how Black women navigate their race, gender, and science identities within predominantly white institutions through their doctoral programs and professional science careers. The study implements Critical Race Mixed Methodology to combine survey data for a wide reach with interview data for detailed exploration. The study involved eight Black women science ā¦
Investigation Of Subsurface Thermal Radiation Phenomena In Fibrous Thermal Protection Systems, Colby L. Gore
Investigation Of Subsurface Thermal Radiation Phenomena In Fibrous Thermal Protection Systems, Colby L. Gore
Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
Atmospheric re-entry induces intense thermal stress upon vehicles through a high-enthalpy boundary layer that encompasses the craft. To protect these vehicles, numerous insulative methods, known as thermal protection systems (TPS), are deployed to protect the craft during re-entry. The TPS materials insulate the craft from intense thermal transmission that would terminate a mission. In hypersonic environments, vast temperature gradients exist, enforcing the exponential effect of thermal radiation. However, TPS materials are commonly low-density fibrous materials that allow for the potential to be penetrated by thermal radiation. A series of arc-jet tests was completed to replicate enhanced radiative conditions in a ā¦
