Background In the United States, complete abstinence persists as the standard for demonstrating recovery success from substance use disorders (SUDs), apart from alcohol use disorder (AUD). Although the FDA has recently indicated openness for non-abstinence outcomes as treatment targets, the traditional benchmark of complete abstinence for new medications to treat SUDs remains a hurdle and overshadows other non-abstinent outcomes desired by people with SUDs (e.g., improved sleep, employment, family reunification). This study sought to expand the definition of recovery to include non-abstinent pathways by exploring non-abstinence-based outcomes desired by people who use methamphetamine (PWUM).

Floral Encounters: Examining The Role Of Experience Goods And Promoters In Specialty Cut Flower Workshops, Savannah L. Columbia
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This thesis provides insight for any farmer interested in agritourism, specifically, specialty cut flower workshops, by investigating consumer behavior related to specialty cut flower workshops as an experience good. It investigates which experience good cues may be important for a consumer’s decision-making process. It introduces a Specialty Cut Flower Workshop Experience Map, which explains how potential participants move from first learning about a specialty cut flower workshop to their long-term behaviors as consumers. These findings help to provide marketing support for smaller-scale specialty crop farmers, specifically, specialty cut flower farmers.

A sense of belonging to familial and peer networks is crucial for the mental health of LGBTQ + youth. Black LGBTQ + youth report feeling rejected and isolated due to their sexual and/or gender identities. Utilizing linear regression analyses, this study explored the relationship between peer and family belongingness and levels of depression, anxiety, and self-rated mental health among 181 Black LGBTQ + youth in the United States and Canada. Findings suggest that family and peer belongingness are important factors in Black LGBTQ + youth’s mental health and warrant further study into the protective nature of peer and family relationships …

Environmental Health Priorities In Rural Public Health Departments: Perspectives From Health Agency Directors, Michelle Rastegar
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Rural communities are staffed by environmental health practitioners with less formal public health training and fewer years of public health experience. The literature on environmental health program implementation in rural communities is incomplete and specifically misses the perspectives of those charged with developing and fielding such programs. The purpose of this paper is to gather and report the insights of three rural local public health department leaders regarding the challenges, opportunities and stakeholders for implementing environmental health programs. Using purposive sampling of faculty community partners, three rural Kentucky local health department directors were recruited to participate in the study. After …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Bourbon County faces rates of obesity and levels of physical inactivity that are at, or worse, than the Kentucky state average. The Bourbon County Health Department (BCHD) has prioritized addressing these issues and received funding from a private foundation to do so. Collaboration with the University of Kentucky and additional funding from UK Healthcare (UKHC) will support these efforts to improve the rates of regular physical activity, raise awareness of the negative health impacts of inactivity, and increase access to safe places to exercise. The BCHD developed a 6-month program that involves several interventions aimed at increasing the percent of …
An Ethnography Of Love Jihad: The Governance Of Interfaith Marriages In Times Of Hindutva, Snehal Sharma
An Ethnography Of Love Jihad: The Governance Of Interfaith Marriages In Times Of Hindutva, Snehal Sharma
Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies
My doctoral research focuses on the violations of human and citizenship rights of women and religiously marginalized communities (based on religious differences) in the backdrop of right-wing movements in India. I assess the Hindu nationalist propaganda named “love jihad” to demonstrate the way it weaponizes religious exogamy. This propaganda legitimizes violence against Indian religious minorities and women as it claims that marriages between Hindu women and Muslim men are acts of terrorism against Hindus with the sole aim of increasing the Muslim population using Hindu women's bodies. I have used ethnographic research methods to explore the legal process of interfaith …
We Know The Odds Aren't Ever In Our Favor: Toward An Understanding Of White Privilege Deprivation Amongst Black Individuals And The Initial Validation Of The White Privilege Deprivation Scale, Jennifer Burris
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Social science scholarship acknowledges that disparities affecting Black people in the United States are rooted in historical race-based oppression (Black & Stone, 2005; Borell, Barnes, & McCreanor, 2018; Harrell, 2000; Mills, 1997). Yet little is understood about the ways Black people psychologically experience being denied the social privileges conferred upon Whites (i.e., White privilege). The belief that White privilege exists, along with the perceptions that Black people as a group are systematically deprived of benefits conferred upon Whites, could expose Black people to negative psychological and psychosocial experiences. As such, White privilege deprivation (the belief one is denied the social …

Examining The Psychometric Properties Of The Classroom Whiteness Scale (Claws) Through Rasch Partial Credit Analysis, Jaylene T. Patterson
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
This pilot study examines how whiteness manifests in K-12 classrooms by developing and evaluating the Classroom Whiteness Scale (ClaWS), an instrument designed to assess in-service teachers’ salience and engagement with whiteness-informed practices. ClaWS consists of 21 items across two subscales: one measuring the salience of whiteness-related beliefs in teachers’ pedagogical decisions and the other capturing the frequency of these practices in classroom settings. Rooted in critical whiteness studies, the scale operationalizes key dimensions of whiteness, including ethnocentric monoculturalism, white standardization, white silence, right to comfort, white saviorism, and colorblind racial ideology.
Using Rasch Partial Credit Model (RPCM) analysis, this study …
Pathways To Financial Wellness: Using Intersectionality Theory To Understand Black Women’S Financial Socialization, Courtney J. Wright
Pathways To Financial Wellness: Using Intersectionality Theory To Understand Black Women’S Financial Socialization, Courtney J. Wright
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Black women experience high levels of financial vulnerability and consistently exhibit poor financial outcomes across the literature; however, few studies have investigated Black women’s financial socialization processes and outcomes. As a function of gendered racial marginalization, Black women occupy a unique standpoint that may influence their financial socialization experiences. Therefore, research that investigates Black women’s financial socialization and perceived financial capability, responsibility, and well-being is warranted.
Within this dual-manuscript style dissertation, the first manuscript investigates the sources, content, and methods of Black women’s family financial socialization messages. Using a critical-constructivist research paradigm and Reflexive Thematic Analysis for data analysis, findings …
Developing Novel Therapeutic Strategies For Mcrc With A Brafv600e Mutation, Mariah Geisen
Developing Novel Therapeutic Strategies For Mcrc With A Brafv600e Mutation, Mariah Geisen
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The overall incidence rates of CRC have decreased in those over 50, but there is an increasing incidence rate in those under 50. Risk factors for CRC include diet, family history, and a sedentary lifestyle. Early detection of CRC is key to patient survival and treatment response. Localized CRC has a survival rate of 90% and allows for surgical resection and chemotherapy. The 5-year survival for metastatic CRC (mCRC) is significantly reduced to around 14%. Despite early detection, 50% of patients will develop metastasis after surgical resection and …
Nf-Κb-Mediated Oxidative Stress Drives Cigarette Smoke-Induced Emt In Human Bronchial Cells, Sarah M. Alqithami
Nf-Κb-Mediated Oxidative Stress Drives Cigarette Smoke-Induced Emt In Human Bronchial Cells, Sarah M. Alqithami
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, many being carcinogens and proinflammatory agents contributing to chronic respiratory diseases like COPD and lung cancer. This study investigated responses of human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) to cigarette smoke condensate (CSC), focusing on oxidative stress and NF-κB signaling. Three HBEC lines were exposed to non-cytotoxic CSC doses for 48 hours, inducing morphological changes consistent with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). RNA sequencing revealed transcriptomic shifts in all cell lines, particularly affecting genes related to oxidative stress, inflammation, hypoxia, and metabolism. Enrichment analyses confirmed activation of NRF2 antioxidant, NF-κB and IL-17 inflammatory, and hypoxiainducible factor pathways, indicating …
Elucidating The Adverse Effects Of Chronic Pfos Exposure On Gastrointestinal Pathology And Colorectal Cancer, Jerika Durham
Elucidating The Adverse Effects Of Chronic Pfos Exposure On Gastrointestinal Pathology And Colorectal Cancer, Jerika Durham
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to a number of detrimental health effects, including an elevated risk of cancer. One "long-chain" subtype of PFAS, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), has a long elimination half-life and a significant propensity for bioaccumulation. Because PFOS is commonly found in drinking water, the gastrointestinal system absorbs it at a high rate. Recent studies demonstrate that PFAS exposures promote intestinal inflammation and gut barrier dysfunction. However, how a long-term PFOS exposure affects colorectal cancer (CRC) progression is not known. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to understand how …

Investigating Plk1 In Pulmonary Fibrosis, Tempany Arbogast
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and fatal interstitial lung disease, with a median survival of only 2–3 years following diagnosis. In the United States, the disease contributes to more than 40,000 deaths annually, underscoring its severe clinical burden. Alveolar type II (AT2) lung epithelial cells serve as progenitors that maintain alveolar integrity by replenishing epithelial populations and producing surfactants, while fibroblasts and myofibroblasts regulate the extracellular matrix and structural support. In pulmonary fibrosis (PF) injury to AT2 cells promotes cytokine and growth factor release, driving inflammation, fibroblast proliferation, myofibroblast accumulation, and excessive extracellular matrix deposition. Aberrant AT2 cell …

U-Net-based deep learning models have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their strong denoising capabilities in image restoration tasks. This study critically evaluates both the strengths and limitations of these models, with a particular focus on their architectural design and constituent components, in an effort to further advance denoising performance. Based on the insights derived from these analyses, a novel architecture–termed U-Tunnel-Net–is proposed. The model is trained on the UNS and Waterloo datasets, each augmented with Rayleigh-distributed speckle noise at four distinct intensity levels (σ = 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75), and evaluated on the UNS, BSD68, and …
Predicting Biologic Nonadherence In Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using Machine Learning Models, Christian Rhudy
Predicting Biologic Nonadherence In Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using Machine Learning Models, Christian Rhudy
Theses and Dissertations--Clinical and Translational Science
Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic relapsing-remitting disease of the intestinal tract affecting approximately 0.5% of the population in the US. Moderate to severe inflammatory bowel disease is managed with biologic therapies to induce and maintain remission, however nonadherence to biologics occurs in and estimated 16.9% and 45% of patients. Nonadherence to biologics can increase the risk of disease flares, emergent healthcare utilization, and surgical intervention. While numerous factors have been associated with biologic nonadherence, there are limited resources for prospectively assessing patient-specific risk of biologic nonadherence. Accordingly, objective of this work is to develop machine learning methods of predicting …
