Seca Stylo (Stylosanthes Scabra Cv. Seca) Populations Increase Faster Under Light Grazing, D M. Orr, C J. Paton

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Augmentation of native pastures with legumes such as Stylosanthes scabra can increase cattle live-weight gain relative to that from native pasture. In the longer term, however, Stylosanthes spp, density can increase and populations of native grasses may become unstable. This paper reports interim results from a study aimed al monitoring changes in the density of S. scabra cv. Seca in relation to stocking rates, The density of Seca monitored in permanent quadrats increased from 15 plants/m2 in 1988 to 100 and 25 plants/m2 in 1992 at 0.25 and 0.5 beasts/ha respectively. These increases resulted from both the survival of the …

Clover-Based Pasture Systems For Intensive Sheep Production In The Central Highlands Of Papua New Guinea, S Sivasupiramaniam, A K. Benjamin, J Pitala

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This paper describes some of the studies that have been conducted since 1985 to develop clover-based pasture systems for intensive sheep production in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea. The clovers tested were Trifolium repens cv. Haifn (Haifa white clover) and Trifolium semipilosum cv. Safari (Kenya white clover). They were sown together, with setaria (Setaria sphacelata cv. Nandi) and signal grass (Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk) at Menifo (1400 m asl) and with setacia and kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum cv. Whittet) at Tambul (2240 m) and Yogos (1950 m) in the central highlands. At Menifo, when rotationally grazed …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Legume-based pastures developed by the Tropical Pastures Program (TPP) of CIAT give spectacular increases in both stocking rates and animal live-weight gains on the savannas of Latin America, A team within the TPP is addressing the problems of their management for legume persistence and soil-plant-animal interactions, using as Its focus a grazing experiment on 2 oxisols of contrasting texture on the Colombian Llanos. The objective is to model the pastures to forecast the effect of management options on long-term persistence and nutrient cycling in grazed legume•grass associations in the Latin American savannas.

Persistence Of Roundleaf Cassia In Grazed Pastures - A Conceptual Model, R M. Jones, C K. Mcdonald, G A. Bunch Jan 2025

Persistence Of Roundleaf Cassia In Grazed Pastures - A Conceptual Model, R M. Jones, C K. Mcdonald, G A. Bunch

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Roundleaf cassia (Cassia rotudifolla) cv. Wynn is a short-lived perennial that relies on seedling recruitment for long-term persistence. Its persistence is considered in terms of survival of plants from the initial sowing, seed set, seedling recruitment, run-down of reserves of soil seed, and survival of seedlings. The major factor controlling all these stages is soil moisture stress; grazing management 'is less important. A conceptual model of Wynn persistence is presented and progress in mathematical modeiling is reported.·

Variation In Hydrological Characteristics Of The Soils Associated With Grazed Patches In Granitic Landscapes In Northern Australia, M M. Sallaway, D Waters, B Bridge, F P. Wandera Jan 2025

Variation In Hydrological Characteristics Of The Soils Associated With Grazed Patches In Granitic Landscapes In Northern Australia, M M. Sallaway, D Waters, B Bridge, F P. Wandera

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Under medium to heavy grazing of black speargrass (Heteropogon contortus) landscapes of south-east Queensland, "patchiness" has developed with a change from H. contortus to Aristida spp., Cllrysopogo11 spp. or a,inual grasses. This grazed patch development is associated with changes in soil hydrological characteristics which in turn affect runoff and soil erosion. T!\e soil hydrologic properties were studied using a rainfall simulator and disc permeameter. The remnant H. contortus areas had higher infiltration characteristics mainly due to the maintenance of larger mncropores (1-3 mm). In the Arlstida patches, the contribution of those large macropores has been greatly reduced. Th is effect …

Evaluation Of Pastures For Sustained Beef Production In Subtropical New South Wales, P T. Mears, D L. Garden, R W. Dicker

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Limitations of low-quality grass pastures, soil fertility, mechanisms of legume persistence and the long-term sustainability of pastures for beef production were studied in a humid subtropical environment of New South Wales, Australia. Sustainability of pastures and animal growth responses in 3 experiments (varying from 4 to 10 years' duration) al 2 sites have been analysed and described. Steers or heifers were used lo assess the effects of introducing subtropical or temperate legumes, level of superphosphate and stocking rate on natural grass pastures, Principal factors which improved the level of beef production from pasture were (i) introducing persistent legumes (ii) level …

Bothriochloa Pertusa- A Useful Grazing-Tolerant Grass For The Seasonally Dry Tropics?, R J. Jones, A Kerr Jan 2025

Bothriochloa Pertusa- A Useful Grazing-Tolerant Grass For The Seasonally Dry Tropics?, R J. Jones, A Kerr

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Data from 2 grazing experiments, small-plot studies, and a vegetation and soil survey showed that Bothriochloa pertusa increased relative to native tufted perennial grasses under heavy grazing pressure and was adapted to a wide range of soils in the 500-1000 mm zone of northern Australia. Ability to grow on low-P soils, lower relative palatability, strong stoloniferous development and good seed production, were features of its success. Annual steer gains on 8. pertusa pastures were similar to those on native pastures, with no species x stocking rate interaction. Steer gains on B. pertusa-Vernno stylo pastures were lower than on Urochloa …

Sustainability Of Sown Pastures In The Tropics And Subtropics, Jose M. Toledo, Daniel Formoso Jan 2025

Sustainability Of Sown Pastures In The Tropics And Subtropics, Jose M. Toledo, Daniel Formoso

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Sown pastures in the tropics and subtropics are important components of production systems. Their role in and contribution to land productivity and economic development are well understood; however, their roles in sustainability and environmental protection are rather misunderstood and little known. The main constraints to sustainability of sown pastures fall into two categories: physical, biological and technical constraints include soil and climatic limitations, lack of adaptation of plants to physical and biotic stress and the limitations of farmers or ranchers to apply technology; socioeconomic factors include political instability, poorness of society and the market forces for land, inputs and products. …

Stability In Rangelands: Ecology And Economics, B H. Walker

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Examples of changes in rangelands are presented relating to changes in livestock number, plant species. composition and soil changes (associated with changes in production), The mechanisms Involved are described, using examples, under the headings: event-driven change, threshold effects, non-linear and hysteresis effects, effects of spatial variation, significance of temporal variation, and interactive effects. The implications for management are presented in the form of a proposed optimal control model which maximises a complex function of welfnre based on long-term net economic benefit, in which stocking rate effects on the state of the rangeland feed back on to economic return.

Complex Tissue Regeneration In Lophuromys Reveals A Phylogenetic Signal For Enhanced Regenerative Ability In Deomyine Rodents, Brennan Riddell, Molly Mcdonough, Adam Ferguson, John M. Kimani, Thomas R. Gawriluk, Chi Peng, Stephen G. Kiama, Vanessa O. Ezenwa, Ashley W. Seifert

Biology Faculty Publications

Identifying why complex tissue regeneration is present or absent in specific vertebrate lineages has remained elusive. One also wonders whether the isolated examples where regeneration is observed represent cases of convergent evolution or are instead the product of phylogenetic inertia from a common ancestral program. Testing alternative hypotheses to identify genetic regulation, cell states, and tissue physiology that explain how regenerative healing emerges in some species requires sampling multiple species among which there is variation in regenerative ability across a phylogenetic framework. Here, we interrogate tissue healing across eleven rodents and show that brush-furred mice (Lophuromys zena) are capable of …

Land use change threatens global biodiversity and compromises ecosystem functions, including pollination and food production. Reduced taxonomic α-diversity is often reported under land use change, yet the impacts could be different at larger spatial scales (i.e., γ-diversity), either due to reduced β-diversity amplifying diversity loss or increased β-diversity dampening diversity loss. Additionally, studies often focus on taxonomic diversity, while other important biodiversity components, including phylogenetic diversity, can exhibit differential responses. Here, we evaluated how agricultural and urban land use alters the taxonomic and phylogenetic α-, β-, and γ-diversity of an important pollinator taxon-bees. Using a multicontinental dataset of 3117 bee …

A clinical and translational scientist (CTS) often seeks to increase their knowledge of statistical topics to effectively conduct biomedical research studies. A common method for obtaining this knowledge is through existing online educational materials that are suggested by a biostatistical collaborator or identified by the CTS. However, the volume of available educational materials on diverse statistical topics makes the task of identifying high-quality educational resources at an appropriate level challenging and time consuming for CTSs and collaborative biostatisticians. In response to these challenges, the Biostats4You website was created, where existing online educational materials for a variety of statistical topics are …

Parents Who Make America Great Again: Identity Politics In Right-Wing Populist Discourses On Gender Ideology And Immigration, Alina Hechler Jan 2025

Parents Who Make America Great Again: Identity Politics In Right-Wing Populist Discourses On Gender Ideology And Immigration, Alina Hechler

Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies

This dissertation explores how anti-immigration and anti-(trans)gender campaigns in the United States engage in an identity politics in which a group benefiting from heteronormative, white supremacist, and nationalist social structures discursively positions itself as an oppressed minority facing an elitist, oppressive, and parasitic establishment. While anti-transgender and anti-immigration platforms represent two distinct issues, they need to be situated within the broader context of right-wing politics. With a focus on the construction of parenthood, my dissertation juxtaposes these two forms of right-wing campaigns through a mixed-method approach by tracing the depiction of two parental figures that have recently emerged in right-wing …

Suicide Exposure In The Army National Guard: A Three Manuscript Dissertation, Rebecca Willis-Nichols Jan 2025

Suicide Exposure In The Army National Guard: A Three Manuscript Dissertation, Rebecca Willis-Nichols

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

Between 2000-2022, the U.S. suicide rate increased 36% with one death now occurring every 11 minutes (CDC, 2024). Despite the Department of Defense making a concerted effort to curb the suicide increases in their ranks, the rates have continued to rise. Active-duty component rates have slowly increased since 2011 while reserve and guard components have held steady (U.S. Department of Defense, 2023). After adjusting for age, the suicide rate in the veteran population was 57% greater than the civilian population in 2020 (CDC, 2024). There is a need for a better understanding of the impact of these deaths and the …

Long-Time Asymptotics For The Kadomtsev–Petviashvili I Equation With Small Initial Data, Samir Donmazov Jan 2025

Long-Time Asymptotics For The Kadomtsev–Petviashvili I Equation With Small Initial Data, Samir Donmazov

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We study the initial value problem for the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili I (KP I) equation (ut + 6uux + uxxx)x = 3uyy with small initial data belonging to a subspace of the energy space for the KP I equation. We establish the long-time asymptotics for solutions of the KP I equation using the inverse scattering transform formalism developed by Zhou. Within this framework, the inverse problem for the KP I equation is formulated as a nonlocal Riemann--Hilbert problem (RHP) in two spatial dimensions. As part of the asymptotic analysis, we determine the long-time behavior of the …

Lagrange Multipliers As A Metric For Early-Stage Shipboard Power System Design, Magdalen A. Barnes Jan 2025

Lagrange Multipliers As A Metric For Early-Stage Shipboard Power System Design, Magdalen A. Barnes

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Integrated power systems are essential in the operation of electric ships and must function under a diverse range of conditions. In addition to routine operation, ships should be prepared to respond to challenging events that require significant amounts of power. Demanding scenarios, coupled with complex and interconnected power systems, present challenging issues. The power and energy ratings of equipment are crucial factors in the operational success of the ship; however, to meet economic constraints, balance between performance and cost must be upheld. Details regarding equipment models and specifications are typically unavailable during early-stage design. Power system modeling and simulation can …

A Radioactive Circuit Split: Addressing Nuclear Waste Storage And Disposal In The United States, Madison King Jan 2025

A Radioactive Circuit Split: Addressing Nuclear Waste Storage And Disposal In The United States, Madison King

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

In this note, Madison King analyzes the emerging circuit split concerning the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) authority to license interim, away-from-reactor nuclear waste storage facilities. King explains that while the D.C. and Tenth Circuits have upheld the NRC’s authority under the Atomic Energy Act, the Fifth Circuit recently rejected that interpretation, ruling the NRC lacks such authority and invoking the major questions doctrine. King argues for a legislative solution to resolve the legal uncertainty and long-standing stalemate over nuclear waste disposal. King proposes that Congress should pass the Nuclear Waste Task Force Act to reevaluate federal policy, eliminate exemptions for …

Puppy Dog Eyes: Begging For Treats And The Regulation Of Dog Breeding, Abigail Barford Jan 2025

Puppy Dog Eyes: Begging For Treats And The Regulation Of Dog Breeding, Abigail Barford

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

In this note, Abigail Barford explores the lack of regulation over dog breeding in Kentucky, particularly the harms caused by puppy mills and backyard breeders. Barford explains that loopholes in the Animal Welfare Act and Kentucky’s absence of state-level protections contribute to dog overpopulation, inhumane conditions, environmental damage, and financial burdens on taxpayers. Barford argues for Kentucky to adopt strong breeding regulations modeled on Pennsylvania’s laws and its own equine breeding system. She proposes statewide legislation to license breeders, enforce humane standards of care, and regulate small-scale breeding to curb overpopulation and protect animal welfare.

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Male sexual assault survivors on college campuses face barriers to disclosure, support, and recovery due to stigma, societal expectations of masculinity, and inadequate institutional resources. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of six male survivors of sexual assault enrolled in college, focusing on their perceptions of sexual violence before and after their assault, the psychological burden of disclosure, and their experiences with available support systems. Participants described challenges including rape myths, feelings of isolation, fear of emasculation, and limited access to gender-inclusive resources. While online communities provided some support, institutional services often failed to meet their needs due …

Coffee Farmgate Price And Post-Harvest Processing In Honduras., Isaac Desouza Jan 2025

Coffee Farmgate Price And Post-Harvest Processing In Honduras., Isaac Desouza

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Volatile commodity markets and changing climate expose coffee farmers to price and production risk. Proponents recommend specialty coffee as a strategy to combat price risk, because its unique attributes differentiate it from commodity coffee. Extrinsic and intrinsic attributes define specialty coffee and affect prices at many levels of the supply chain. Despite much work on extrinsic attributes, little is known about how intrinsic attributes relate to farmgate price. Post-harvest processing is itself an intrinsic trait and driver of coffee quality. In 2024 we surveyed 261 coffee farmers from La Paz, Honduras, to uncover relationships between capital, post-harvest processing, and farmgate …

A Systems-Based Framework For Product Circularity Assessment, Gisele Bortolaz Guedes, Junwon Ko, Fazleena Badurdeen, I. S. Jawahir, K. C. Morris, Vincenzo Ferrero

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the key aspects of Circular Economy (CE), particularly when focusing on the product level, lies in its emphasis on designing products to facilitate the circulation of resources and maximize value throughout their entire lifecycle. To effectively develop such products an understanding of the characteristics of circular products (CP) is needed. Adopting a systems perspective that considers the total lifecycle and stakeholders involved and recognizing interdependencies among them is essential for identifying factors that characterize CPs. Existing methods for assessing product circularity do not identify all factors that charac- terize CPs and have limitations in the measurement methods proposed, …

Energy Dependence Of Polarized Γγ → E+E− In Peripheral Au + Au Collisions At √Snn = 54.4 And 200 Gev With The Star Experiment At Rhic, Star Collaboration Jan 2025

Energy Dependence Of Polarized Γγ → E+E− In Peripheral Au + Au Collisions At √Snn = 54.4 And 200 Gev With The Star Experiment At Rhic, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report the differential yields at mid-rapidity of the Breit-Wheeler process (γ γ → e+e−) in peripheral Au + Au collisions at √s NN = 54.4 and 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as a function of energy √s NN , e+e− transverse momentum pT , p2 T , invariant mass Mee, and azimuthal angle. In the invariant mass range of 0.4 < Mee < 2.6 GeV/c2 at low transverse momentum (pT < 0.15 GeV/c), the yields increase while the pair √〈p2 T〉 decreases with increasing √s NN , a feature that is correctly predicted by the QED calculation. The energy dependencies of the measured quantities are sensitive to the nuclear form factor, infrared divergence and photon polarization. The data are compiled and used to extract the charge radius of the Au nucleus.

A Franciscan Friar’S Defiant Journey: The Extent Of Individual Power In Colonial Mexico, 1782, Genesis Pena-Lozada

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

During Spanish occupation of Mexico from 1521 to 1821, religion was used as an extension of the Spanish crown as Mexico’s native populations were forcibly converted to Catholicism. Religious orders, including Franciscan friars, a group of men who wandered and preached to help the poor and sick, were used in the systematic conversion of native populations. Because of the sheer scale of religious conversion of these native populations, the Spanish crown’s efforts in New Spain are sometimes described as a “spiritual conquest” rather than a military conquest. However, like military conquest, this evangelization was still enacted through power and domination. …

An Improved Machining Temperature Prediction Model For Aerospace Alloys: Effect Of Cutting Edge Radius And Tool Wear, Jonathan Theraroz, Oguzhan Tuysuz, Julius Schoop

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Temperature rise during machining impacts the workpiece material properties, residual stresses, surface and sub-surface quality. Experimental, numerical, and analytical methods have been used to predict the temperature fields in the tool, workpiece and chip. Each approach has its limitations: experimental techniques are cumbersome with expensive equipment, and numerical modeling is computationally inefficient. Existing analytical models only consider the effect of wear while ignoring the edge radius, though the latter changes with the flank wear in practice. To address this limitation, this article proposes an improved analytical temperature prediction model for orthogonal machining by introducing discrete linear heat sources on the …
