The Rhetoric Of Responsibilization: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Campaigns For Hiv Prevention, Catherine M. Pabalate
The Rhetoric Of Responsibilization: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Campaigns For Hiv Prevention, Catherine M. Pabalate
Kentucky Undergraduate Journal for the Health Humanities
Responsibilization refers to the process by which patients are made accountable for their health and wellbeing, which is determined by their habits and behaviors. Though responsibilization affords greater agency to patients, it can also result in anxiety and guilt when the patient appears "deviant" or "noncompliant." Because sexual behavior is attributed to the causality of HIV/AIDS, patients’ sexual patterns and choices are included within their medical decision-making. This rhetorical analysis focuses on pharmaceutical campaigns and commercials for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which were released between 2012 and 2024 and are targeted towards patients at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Findings suggest that specific rhetorical …

Library Presentations
The digital archivist position was created at the University of Kentucky two years ago to help create and refine workflows and process born-digital collections in our manuscripts and university archives collections. While much of the initial work of these last two years was on newly acquired collections and materials, in the decades prior, a variety of born-digital materials on physical media had been gathered in hybrid collections and stored and described in myriad ways. This presentation will demonstrate my processes for discovering and assessing unmigrated born-digital materials on physical media hidden throughout our collection. The process is built on documentation …

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanostructures have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as there is an increasing demand for cost-effective and sustainable hydrogen production. Despite significant progress, there is still a critical need for developing facile and green methods for synthesizing ultrathin TMD nanostructures. In this study, we introduce a green, top-down synthesis method to produce highly exfoliated WS2 nanosheets. The process combines the ultrasonication of bulk WS2 in a binary water-ethanol solvent with a solvothermal treatment. The resulting ultrathin WS2 nanosheets exhibit clean surfaces free of surface ligands and impurities, high crystallinity …
How To Gender Include, Stephen Krueger
How To Gender Include, Stephen Krueger
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Gender inclusion is not an optional part of library work—at least, it isn’t if we want all those “Libraries Are For Everyone” signs to be true. And yet, the reality is that many libraries fail the most basic aspects of gender inclusion for patrons, employees, or both. Even in libraries where Trans 101 trainings do occur and are well received, or where the baseline of knowledge among employees is relatively high, the question remains: What now?
This article intends to answer that question. Very broadly speaking, gender inclusion work in libraries means sustained action to ensure that some patrons and …

From Disruption To Recovery: Charter School Performance During And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Adam Kho, Shelby Smith, Ron Zimmer
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications
In recent decades, an increasing number of students have pursued alternative educational options, including charter schools, as school choice has continued to expand. This trend was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is well established that students experienced widespread learning loss during the pandemic, it remains unclear whether the extent of that loss or the pace of recovery has differed between charter and traditional public schools (TPS). In the current study, we examine the effects of Tennessee charter schools on student achievement during and after the pandemic. Using student-level data from 2017-18 to 2022-23, we estimate the charter school …

Increasing frequency and intensity of global warming pose a profound threat to plant species persistence. Most investigations on plants' resilience to heat events focus on few genotypes of model species. Novel insights into resilience mechanisms will be gained by focusing on natural variation in thermotolerance and its relationship to local-abiotic factors. Additionally, studying species that survived 'ancient periods' of high temperatures provides insight into resilience mechanisms. Within a species, we assessed spatial thermotolerance variation, its association with temperature and light, while testing for thermotolerance sex differences and its relationship with population sex ratios. We used Marchantia inflexa, a species with …

Aggregator Zone Selection For Ev Smart Controls Based-On Ml Clustering Of Grid Strength, Distance, And Charging Homogeneity, Rosemary E. Alden, Sam H. Lowe Ii, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
Smart electric vehicle (EV) charging control methods from a central utility hub often require communication infrastructure over a large service area of electric power distribution systems with a large number of nodes. Industry standards such as Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.1 have evolved to include topologies for local controllers to the individual chargers, i.e. EV aggregator zones. A machine learning (ML) application of k-means clustering is proposed to establish zones for coordination of EV charging based on grid strength and EV owner decision-making to charge per day. Very large-scale distribution networks including the IEEE 123 and 8500 benchmark feeders …

With significant increase in EV adoption expected in the near future and the associated impacts on power systems, the effect of volt/var optimization (VVO) as the next step to conservation voltage reduction (CVR), requires reevaluation. Implementation of a cluster-based VVO control strategy employs a novel approach with machine learning (ML) load forecasting to reduce device adjustments through k-means clustering of contiguous time steps with similar active power load in which a single adjustment would be sufficient. The cluster-based VVO method is tested on a complex real world utility distribution feeder with 2,018 nodes, 8.65MW peak load, 9 capacitor banks (CBs), …

This paper presents an innovative method for designing high-performance electric motors by integrating machine learning (ML) based meta-modeling with a differential evolution (DE) optimization algorithm. The approach utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) data to train the ML meta-model, allowing for efficient optimization of high-power-density machines, such as the reluctance rotor and permanent magnet (PM) stator combined excitation motor, which is characterized by nonlinearities. The meta-modeling process employs an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with 3 hidden layers and uses the motor’s geometrical variables as inputs. The accuracy of the meta-model in capturing the nonlinear relationships between design parameters, core losses, and …

Three And Two Phase Rotating Field Inductive Couplers For Wireless Power Transfer With One Phase Per Layer Windings, Donovin D. Lewis, Lucas Gastineau, Omer Onar, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
Multiphase inductive wireless charging coils have been proposed recently to improve coupler surface power density, reduce component stress and size, and provide near-constant power delivery to charge mobile electric systems. Several aspects for the fundamental characterization of multiphase coils are explored up to six phases including approximate mutual inductance with size and turn variation, induced voltage, and output power estimation. The relative component stress and size of passive components for resonant operation are compared between the multiphase variants. A combination of an experimentally validated 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) and power electronic co-simulations are used to validate the estimated …

Permanent magnet eddy current losses can become substantial in coreless stator axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines operating at high speeds and under high electric loading, potentially leading to elevated temperatures and an increased risk of demagnetization. This paper investigates the origins of these losses through a detailed harmonic analysis of the winding factor and introduces a mitigation strategy. The proposed method utilizes two-layer offset windings, effectively minimizing undesirable armature flux harmonics through harmonic interaction between the offset layers. Two cases are studied: one in which each stator layer is connected to a separate inverter and another in which both …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a significant cause of injury-related deaths and disabilities. Repeated exposure to mechanical impact can lead to metabolic and ionic imbalance, which can cause oxidative stress and worsen the cellular dysfunction initiated by the initial mild TBI (mTBI). Currently, no FDA-approved drug targets repeated mTBI (rmTBI) and its potential sequelae. Mitoquinone (MitoQ) is a mitochondrion-targeted drug that has proven beneficial in different brain-related diseases. We have previously demonstrated the neurotherapeutic effects of MitoQ at a 30-day chronic time point in a similar rmTBI mouse model, where we observed decreased neuroinflammation, enhanced behavioral outcomes, and diminished oxidation. …

We previously demonstrated that neurotensin, a 13-amino-acid gut hormone peptide, enhances small intestinal epithelial cell fatty acid uptake through inhibition of AMPK. Here, utilizing Drosophila and mouse models in vivo, as well as mouse and human small intestinal epithelial organoids or monolayers ex vivo, we determine the targets of neurotensin and AMPK associated with obesity and aging. High-fat diet and aging decreased AMPK and insulin signaling, which was prevented by neurotensin deficiency. High-fat diet feeding increased FABP1 protein expression in wild-type mice; this effect was attenuated in neurotensin-deficient mice. AICAR and metformin increased AMPK phosphorylation in young but not in …

We propose a new random change point model that utilizes routinely recorded individual-level HIV viral load data to estimate the timing of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation in people living with HIV. The change point distribution is assumed to follow a zero-inflated exponential distribution for the longitudinal data, which is also subject to left-censoring, and the underlying data-generating mechanism is a nonlinear mixed-effects model. We extend the Stochastic EM (StEM) algorithm by combining a Gibbs sampler with a Metropolis–Hastings sampling. We apply the method to real HIV data to infer the timing of ART initiation since diagnosis. Additionally, we conduct simulation …

Background: Youth mental health is a public health crisis. Bullying has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes including depression and suicidal ideation. We aimed to update information regarding the associations between bullying and sadness and three suicide-related outcomes, along with the potential moderating effect of physical activity (PA). Methods: Using the 2017–2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) with students in grades 9–12 we used descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regressions to examine the association between students who have been bullied and who reported feeling sad or hopeless, as well as considered, planned, and/or attempted suicide, within …

A diagnostic rubric is required to distinguish between limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 inclusions (FTLD-TDP). In LATE-NC Stage 3, TDP-43 proteinopathy is present in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG), thus posing a potential diagnostic challenge in differentiating these severe LATE-NC cases from FTLD-TDP. LATE-NC Stage 3 cases and other TDP-43 proteinopathies were analyzed from the University of Kentucky (total n = 514 with TDP-43 pathology assessed), The 90+ Study at the University of California Irvine (n = 458), and the Mayo Clinic (n = 5067) brain banks. Digital pathology was used to …
