The first studies made in Cuba about the effect of grazing on several legumes demonstrated that the highest yields during the dry season as well as the higher estimated intake were obtained with Leucaena (Funes, 1980). Productions higher than 14 I (litres)/ cow were obtained and the concentrate was substituted (Funes and Jordan, 1987) using Leucaena forage during another slight short work which was conducted to substitute totally or partially a commercial concentrate in dairy cows diets. Dans le contexte des quotas laitiers, les patures de ray-grass anglais - trefle blanc a faible fumure azotee peuvent etre l'une des voies pour maintenir le revenu, dans la mesure ou elles per­mettent des productions laitieres par vache et par hectare pro­ches de celles obtenues sur pature de ray-grass recevant 300 unites d'azote par ha et par an. Le programme de recherche mis en place en Bretagne a partir de 1982 sur ce theme s'appuie sur un reseau d'observations d'une centaine de fermes laitieres et sur des essais en station, dont ceux de Trevarez presentes ci­apres.

A positive relationship between herbage mass and intake has been reported (Stockdale, 1985). The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of herbage mass on intake and ingestive behaviour of dairy cows and the influences of herbage digesti­bility and daily herbage allowance on those effects.

High quality fibrous concentrates have been reported to give higher milk production responses and lower substitution rates compared to starchy concentrates wht:n fed to dairy cows (Meijs, 1986). Very large substitution rates for barley compared to both molassed beet pulp and beet pulp were found (Stakelum and Dillon, 1988) with grazing dairy cows. The pre­sent experiment was designed to investigate further the effects of concentrate type on herbage intake at two levels of herbage intake.

A considerable amount of herbage which is only partially grazed accumulates around dung pats over the grazing season in swards grazed by dairy cows or beef cattle. This tall grass can represent 15-45 % of the sward area (Marsh and Cam piing, 1970) depending on stocking rate or herbage allowance, grass growth rate and season of the year. The present study was un< ;lertaken to measure the area and proportion of a perennial ryegrass sward represented by short-grass and tall grass, the extent to which each category was grazed and their contri­bution to the diet of cows when rotationally grazed in an inten­sive leader/follower grazing system.

In south eastern Australia, the mild climate permits year­round grazing for 1.5 million dairy cows which results in a low production cost for milk. Milk production responses to nitrogen fertiliser on tropical grass systems have been well documented (Davison et al. 1985a; 1985b). However, there are no reports on the long term phosphorus fertiliser requirements of dairy pastures. This experiment, which ran for 7 years, was designed to determine the long term phosphorus fertiliser requirements, for mainten­ance of a grass pasture fertilised with nitrogen. The effects of fertiliser level were monitored in terms of changes in soil fer­tility, plant productivity and milk yield.

There is increasing interest in exploiting legume-based pastures in the temperate zones of NW Europe-their value for lamb and beef production being recently documented (Stewart, 1984; Davies and Munro, 1988). Legume-based intensive dairying is currently not prevalent north of - 49 NL but quota restrictions leading to fewer cows may create conditions favourable to legumes within dairying. This paper describes the results of experimentation comparing N and legume-based dairying in cool temperate conditions and assesses future pros­pects.

The weight of animals and hence their intakes vary between grazing experiments and at different stages of the same study but the results are often presented as though these differences do not affect grazing pressure (Roberts, 1980). Thus we have sheep/ha and cattle/ha, with no indication of the effects that differences in intake and hence grazing pressure might have on the pasture/animal interaction. Pastures are utilized by different classes of stock and there is a need to have a common basis for comparing their productivity. These problems would be over­come by the use of a Standard Livestock Unit (SLU).

Engulfment and cell motility protein 1 (Elmo1) forms a complex with Dedicator of cytokinesis (Dock) 1–5 and promotes GTP-loading of Rac1, the major agent of cell movement. While the pathophysiological roles of Elmo1 have expanded from apoptotic cell engulfment to cancer, inflammation, diabetic nephropathy and cardiomyopathy, little information is available on its transcriptional regulation. Genome databases indicate at least five transcript variants for human ELMO1: the variants V1, V4 and V5 encode a full-length 727 aa protein, whereas V2 and V3 encode a truncated Elmo1 of 247 aa that lacks N-terminal domains. We used mapping of bedrock lithology, bedrock fractures, and lake density in Inglefield Land, northwestern Greenland, combined with cosmogenic nuclide (¹⁰Be and ²⁶Al) measurements in bedrock surfaces, to investigate glacial erosion and the ice sheet history of the northwestern Greenland Ice Sheet. The pattern of eroded versus weathered bedrock surfaces and other glacial erosion indicators reveal temporally and spatially varying erosion under cold- and warm-based ice. All of the bedrock surfaces that we measured in Inglefield Land contain cosmogenic nuclide inheritance with apparent ¹⁰Be ages ranging from 24.9 ± 0.5 to 215.8 ± 7.4 ka. The …

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of a neonatal resuscitation training program using traditional training and partial distance learning.

METHOD: Through an open cluster-randomized trial, the authors compared a traditional approach involving face-to-face theory and practice sessions using information and communication technology to offer theory and distance examination, followed by face-to-face practice. Twelve health facilities were allocated by blocked randomization. Comparisons were made adjusting for clustering in qualitative and quantitative data. We evaluated the effect of selected insecticides on 6 mature Shademaster honey locust trees (Gleditsia triacanthos L., ‘Shademaster’) which were planted in 2 rows along a roadside on the University of Kentucky’s campus. We used a randomized complete block design where each tree represented a block, and within each tree, the effect of insecticides on scales was evaluated on separate labeled branches. All trees had been heavily infested with calico scale (CS) for multiple years. On each tree we sectioned off 11 randomly selected 30-cm branch sections with zip-ties. A novel engineered Ni-Cu/Al₂O₃ decarboxylation/decarbonylation catalyst achieved quantitative conversion of brown grease, excellent yield of diesel-like hydrocarbons, effective heteroatom removal, and remarkable resistance to deactivation for hundreds of hours on stream. This offers an industrial alternative to hydrotreating for transforming waste oleaginous feedstocks into renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.

Oftentimes, archivists and programmers feel like Sisyphus of Greek myth, continually rolling our boulder, the digital library, up the hill of stakeholder expectations. Since 1998, the University of Kentucky Libraries has provided online access to digital and digitized archival content through ExploreUK.uky.edu and other sites. Like many other institutions, UK Libraries has faced technological, organizational, and communication challenges in this endeavor. This presentation explores how UK Libraries responded to these challenges by expanding the decision-making team, after years of unclear responsibility and ownership, to reinvigorate internal interest and investment in the local digital library system and workflows.
