Grain Size Distributions And Photoelectric Heating In Ionized Media, P. A. M. Vanhoof, J. C. Weingartner, P. G. Martin, K. Volk, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Ever since the pioneering study of Spitzer, it has been widely recognized that grains play an important role in the heating and cooling of photoionized environments. This includes the diffuse interstellar medium and H II regions, planetary nebulae and photodissociation regions. A detailed code is necessary to model grains in a photoionized medium since the interactions of grains with their environment include a host of microphysical processes. In this paper we will use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY for this purpose. A comprehensive upgrade of the grain model has been recently incorporated into CLOUDY. One of these upgrades is the …

Loss Of Sympathetic Control Of Cardiovascular Function Following Spinal Cord Injury, Charles Everett Hogancamp Ii Jan 2004

Loss Of Sympathetic Control Of Cardiovascular Function Following Spinal Cord Injury, Charles Everett Hogancamp Ii

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Cardiovascular control in the human is significantly impaired after spinal cord injury(SCI) having a direct effect on the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) causing an inability toregulate vasoconstriction below the level of the lesion. The effects of SCI on the two majorcomponents of blood pressure regulation, control of plasma volume and neural control of theheart and peripheral vasculature are poorly understood. In particular, no index to diagnosedisorders to autonomic control of the heart and vasculature has been developed. The presentstudy primarily utilized noninvasively acquired, easily accessible variables that may havepromise as indicators of autonomic activity for assessing the level of autonomic …

An Econometric Analysis Of Infant Mortality, Pollution, And Income In The U.S. Counties, Margarita Yuri Somov

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The concept of economic development has broadened to include environmental quality and population health. Interactions between income and pollution, income and health, and pollution and health have been studied separately by researchers from various disciplines. This study attempts to unify several different research strands and analyze simultaneous interactions between population health, measured by the infant mortality rate, pollution, and income in one endogenous system. Socioeconomic, racial, and rural urban disparities in infant mortality, pollution, and income are analyzed. The simultaneous equation system, estimated using the two-stage least squares method, tests whether pollution effects on infant mortality are outweighed by income …

Quantitative Analysis Of Hemocyte Morphological Abnormalities Associated With Campoletis Sonorensis Parasitization, Matthew W. Turnbull, Stacy B. Martin, Bruce A. Webb Jan 2004

Quantitative Analysis Of Hemocyte Morphological Abnormalities Associated With Campoletis Sonorensis Parasitization, Matthew W. Turnbull, Stacy B. Martin, Bruce A. Webb

Entomology Faculty Publications

Endoparasitoids of arthropods evoke host cellular immune responses that result in hemocytic encapsulation of the endoparasitoid, unless these responses are disrupted by the parasite. Our interest has focused on mutualistic viruses found in some hymenopteran endoparasitoids that disrupt hemocyte function and prevent encapsulation. Specifically, the Campoletis sonorensis polydnavirus interacts with wasp factors to suppress immunity via expression of intracellular and secreted viral proteins. To study the roles of specific parasitization-associated factors on immunocyte morphology, fluorescence microscopy was used to visualize the actin cytoskeleton in infected and uninfected cells, or after treatment with C. sonorensis ovarian proteins or plasma from infected …

Wavelet And Sine Based Analysis Of Print Quality Evaluations, Vijay Venkatesh Mahalingam Jan 2004

Wavelet And Sine Based Analysis Of Print Quality Evaluations, Vijay Venkatesh Mahalingam

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Recent advances in imaging technology have resulted in a proliferation of images across different media. Before it reaches the end user, these signals undergo several transformations, which may introduce defects/artifacts that affect the perceived image quality. In order to design and evaluate these imaging systems, perceived image quality must be measured. This work focuses on analysis of print image defects and characterization of printer artifacts such as banding and graininess by using a human visual system (HVS) based framework. Specifically the work addresses the prediction of visibility of print defects (banding and graininess) by representing the print defects in terms …

Nutrient Mediated Protection Against Endothelial Cell Dysfunction, Gudrun Reiterer Jan 2004

Nutrient Mediated Protection Against Endothelial Cell Dysfunction, Gudrun Reiterer

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is thought to be initiated by endothelial cell dysfunction. Research described in this dissertation is focused on interactions of nutrients, cytokines and pharmaceutical compounds in the intracellular signaling pathways leading to endothelial cell activation. The flavonoid quercetin could significantly downregulate the inflammatory pathways induced by linoleic acid as determined by DNA binding assays of the proinflammatory transcription factors nuclear factor-kappaB and activator protein-1 as well as by gene expression studies of interleukin-6 and vascular adhesion molecule-1. Interestingly, quercetin and vitamin E also prevented the linoleic acid-induced activation of PPAR DNA binding - suggesting a role of oxidation in the …

Leptin Receptors In Caveolae: Regulation Of Lipolysis In 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Gentle P. Chikani Jan 2004

Leptin Receptors In Caveolae: Regulation Of Lipolysis In 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Gentle P. Chikani

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The present study has tested the hypothesis that leptin receptors are localized in caveolae and that caveolae are involved in the leptin-induced stimulation of lipolysis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Leptin, a peptide hormone, is secreted primarily by adipocytes and has been postulated to regulate food intake and energy expenditure via hypothalamic-mediated effects. Exposure to leptin increases the lipolytic activity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We isolated caveolae from 3T3-L1 adipocytes using a detergent free sucrose gradient centrifugation method. Leptin receptors were localized in the same gradient fraction as caveolin-1. Confocal microscopic studies demonstrated the colocalization of leptin receptors with caveolin-1 in the plasma …

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between several aspects of family environment and adolescent substance use. Participants included 372 (M = 15.45 years, range = 15-17) adolescent males with and without a paternal history of Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Participants completed measures of family functioning, family communication, parentadolescent communication, living arrangement, temperament, and substance use. Results indicated that family functioning and communication predicted a significant reduction in the number of drugs used, frequency of drug use, and problems associated with drug use beyond the effects of demographic covariates. Additionally, temperament and family history of SUD were …

Loline Alkaloid Biosynthesis In Neotyphodium Uncinatum, A Fungal Endophyte Of Lolium Pratense, Jimmy Douglas Blankenship Jan 2004

Loline Alkaloid Biosynthesis In Neotyphodium Uncinatum, A Fungal Endophyte Of Lolium Pratense, Jimmy Douglas Blankenship

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Some endophytes in mutualistic associations with Festuca, Lolium and other grass species produce insecticidal loline alkaloids (1-aminopyrrolizidines; LA). These loline alkaloids have a saturated pyrrolizidine ring system (two-rings sharing a carbon and nitrogen atom), a 1-amine substituted with methyl, acetyl, or formyl groups, and an oxygen bridge between C-2 and C-7. The development of a reliable system of production of LA in cultures of the Lolium pratense (meadow fescue) endophyte, Neotyphodium uncinatum, facilitated work on the LA biosynthetic pathway. N. uncinatum produced norloline, loline, methylloline, N-acetylnorloline (NANL), N-formylloline (NFL), and N-acetylloline as detected in culture filtrates. The total production …

The Role Of Tombusvirus Replicase Proteins And Rna In Replicase Assembly, Replication And Recombination, Zivile Sliesaraviciute Panaviene

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Tombusviruses are single, positive strand RNA viruses of plants, often associated with parasitic defective interfering (DI) RNAs. Two viral- coded gene products, namely p33 and p92, are required for tombusvirus replication. The overlapping domains of p33 and p92 contain an arginine/proline-rich (RPR) RNA binding motif. In this study, the role of RPR motif and viral RNA in tombusvirus replication and recombination, as well as involvement of viral RNA in tombusvirus replicase assembly was examined. Using site-directed mutagenesis I generated a series of RPR mutants of Cucumber necrosis tombusvirus (CNV). Analysis of RPR mutants defined that wild type RPR motif, especially …

Thymoquinone: The Evaluation Of Its Cytotoxic Potential, Effects On P53 Status And The Cell Cycle In Various Cancer Cell Lines, Alison Ann Mokashi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Cancer is a group of diseases that are the second leading cause of human mortality in the United States. Discovering new therapies is vital to conquer cancer. Thymoquinone (TQ) is found in the plant Nigella sativa. TQ was found to be cytotoxic to the human ovarian cancer cell lines PA-1, CAOV-3 and SKOV-3, which have varying p53 status. PA-1 cells were the most sensitive, indicating that TQ was effective against cells having wild-type (WT) p53. Western blots indicated an increase in p53 in cell lines having WT p53. TQ when given concurrently with cisplatin resulted in antagonism for PA-1, A172 …

Comparative Mapping: Homology Within The Order Perissodactyla Of Four Genes Located On Equus Caballus Chromosome 20, Christine Marie Mains

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Since changes in chromosome morphology contribute to the knowledge of evolution as well as to chromosome dynamics, this study looks specifically at one chromosome compared in twelve different species of Perissodactyls: Equus caballus (ECA), E. przewalskii (EPR), Equus africanus somaliensis (EAF), E. asinus (EAS), E. hemionus onager (EHO), E. h. kulan (EHK), E. h. kiang (EKI), E. zebra hartmannae (EZH), E. grevyi (EGR), E. burchelli (EBU), Tapirus indicus (TIN), and Rhinoceros unicornis (RUN). While chromosome morphology studies have been done in some of the extant equids, none have followed the evolution of this chromosome, homologous to Equus caballus chromosome 20 …

Supernatant Protein Factor: Insights Into Its Regulation And Ability To Stimulate Cholesterol Synthesis In Vitro And In Cell Culture, Vishwesh Mokashi Jan 2004

Supernatant Protein Factor: Insights Into Its Regulation And Ability To Stimulate Cholesterol Synthesis In Vitro And In Cell Culture, Vishwesh Mokashi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Supernatant protein factor (SPF) is a 46-kDa cytosolic protein that stimulates squalene monooxygenase, which catalyses the second committed step in cholesterol biosynthesis. The mechanism by which SPF stimulates this enzyme is not understood and the goal of these studies was to see if SPF affected cholesterol synthesis in cultured cells. Rat supernatant protein factor-like protein (SPF2) shares 77% sequence identity with human SPF. In my studies SPF2 also stimulated squalene monooxygenase in vitro and incubation of SPF2 with protein kinase A (PKA) and C increased its activity by about 2-fold, as shown earlier with SPF. GTP and GDP prevented the …

The Transport And Modulation Of Hiv Protease Inhibitors Into The Rat Central Nervous System And Milk, Jeffrey Earl Edwards Jan 2004

The Transport And Modulation Of Hiv Protease Inhibitors Into The Rat Central Nervous System And Milk, Jeffrey Earl Edwards

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to study the mechanism by which HIV protease inhibitors enter into the central nervous system (CNS) and breast milk of rats, and what effects MDR modulators have on the distribution and metabolism of HIV protease inhibitors. The transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp) has been shown to limit the distribution of HIV protease inhibitors into the CNS of rodents. This thesis examined the effects of GF120918, an MDR modulator, on the CNS distribution of amprenavir, an HIV protease inhibitor, in rats. GF120918 significantly increased the unbound CNS concentrations of amprenavir without altering the unbound blood concentrations of …

Regulation Of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: An Application Of Economic Theory To Firm Decision Making And Applications For Public Policy, Benjamin Gramig

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The livestock industry in the United States has experienced significant concentration and vertical integration in recent years. This change has resulted in greater observed levels of pollution attributed to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) and society has attempted to use regulation to remedy these problems. Despite regulation at the federal and local level no documented improvement in water quality has been observed to date. This thesis is concerned with the response of profit-maximizing economic agents to the form of environmental regulation adopted at the federal level. A theoretical model of firm profit is proposed and analyzed using comparative statics to …

Breeding For Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Virginia Laura Verges Jan 2004

Breeding For Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Virginia Laura Verges

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Fusarium graminearum, the causative agent of Fusarium head blight, is an economically important pathogen of wheat (Triticum aestivum). Breeding Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistant wheat requires knowledge of the underlying genetic control of FHB resistance. Genetic parameters for FHB resistance and five related traits were estimated in three populations at two locations and in two years. Moderate broad sense heritabilities for FHB severity and Fusarium damaged kernels (FDK) were observed. Incidence of FHB and the toxin deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation had low to moderate broad sense heritabilities. Correlations between FDK and severity and FDK and DON were moderate to high in …

Line Associative Registers, Krishna Melarkode Jan 2004

Line Associative Registers, Krishna Melarkode

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

As technological advances have improved processor speed, main memory speed has lagged behind. Even with advanced RAM technologies, it has not been possible to close the gap in speeds. Ideally, a CPU can deliver good performance when the right data is made available to it at the right time. Caches and Registers solved the problem to an extent. This thesis takes the approach of trying to create a new memory access model that is more efficient and simple instead of using various add on mechanisms to mask high memory latency. The Line Associative Registers have the functionality of a cache, …

Pressurized Solvents In Whole-Cell Bioprocessing: Metabolic And Structural Perturbations, Geoffrey D. Bothun Jan 2004

Pressurized Solvents In Whole-Cell Bioprocessing: Metabolic And Structural Perturbations, Geoffrey D. Bothun

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Compressed and supercritical fluids, such as pressurized CO2, ethane, orpropane, provide a versatile and environmentally acceptable alternative to conventionalliquid organic solvents in bioprocessing applications – specifically in the areas ofproduct extraction, protein purification, microbial sterilization, and enzymatic and wholecellbiocatalysis. While their advantages have been well demonstrated, the effects ofcompressed and supercritical fluids on whole cells are largely unknown.Metabolic and structural perturbations of whole cells by compressed andsupercritical fluid solvents were examined. These perturbations exist as cell metabolismand membrane structure are influenced by pressure and the presence of a solventphase. Continuous cultures of Clostridium thermocellum (a model ethanol-producingthermophilic bacterium) were conducted …

The Social Life Of Poetry: Pluralism And Appalachia, 1937-1946, Christopher Allen Green Jan 2004

The Social Life Of Poetry: Pluralism And Appalachia, 1937-1946, Christopher Allen Green

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how poetry about Appalachia expanded American considerations of democracy, ethnicity, and cultural values. I argue that poetry is profoundly communal in its construction and investigate how the value of poetry changes based upon its transfer through varying networks of production, circulation, and reception. Informed by theories of cultural capital and rhetoric, the chapters trace three books of poetry from their composition and publication to their reception and influence, noting how central political and social institutions and individuals shaped that process. The dissertation establishes how the poets crafted their writing to sway specific interpretive communities attitudes on pluralism. …

Detailed Modeling Of Mufflers With Perforated Tubes Using Substructure Boundary Element Method, Balasubramanian Datchanamourty Jan 2004

Detailed Modeling Of Mufflers With Perforated Tubes Using Substructure Boundary Element Method, Balasubramanian Datchanamourty

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Perforated tubes in mufflers are generally modeled by the transfer impedance approach since modeling the actual geometry of the perforated tubes with holes is very expensive due to the enormity of the boundary elements required. With the development of the substructuring technique which greatly reduces the number of elements required detailed modeling of the perforated tubes has become possible. In this thesis mufflers with perforated tubes are analyzed by modeling the actual geometry and locations of holes on the perforated tubes. The Direct-mixed-body boundary element method with substructuring is used to model the mufflers. Mufflers of various geometry containing perforated …
