Scribblescholar Was Here: Confessional Notes Of A Vandal Academic, Clay Shields Jan 2015

Scribblescholar Was Here: Confessional Notes Of A Vandal Academic, Clay Shields

Theses and Dissertations--English

As a (former) vandal-punk in the academy, I often fear succumbing to Ivory Tower Stockholm syndrome. The identities I perform, vandal-punk and scholar, ideologically clash to the point that they often feel irreconcilable. By codemeshing the high-low discourses associated with these adopted cultures, I attempt to disrupt any hierarchal privileging of either, instead searching for a way to live with and harness both.

Campaign Finance And The Ecology Of Democratic Speech, Michael Kent Curtis, Eugene D. Mazo Jan 2015

Campaign Finance And The Ecology Of Democratic Speech, Michael Kent Curtis, Eugene D. Mazo

Kentucky Law Journal

Biologists have contributed to our understanding of the world's ecosystems, explaining how the natural world is populated by different species, which are able to thrive and blossom because of the existence of other species in the rightproportion. In similar fashion, the authors of this article believe that the political world has an ecosystem. It is an ecosystem where free speech may thrive or wither, and its fate rests on the delicate balance of political influence between citizens and corporations. This balance is disturbed when concentrations of wealth funnel into the democratic process through campaign spending. The Supreme Court, through its …

Three Essays On Public Organizations, Changgeun Yun Jan 2015

Three Essays On Public Organizations, Changgeun Yun

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

Organizations play key roles in modern societies. The importance of organizations for a society requires an understanding of organizations. In order to fully understand public organizations, it is necessary to recognize how organizational settings affect subjects of organizations and organizing. Although public and private organizations interrelate with each other, the two types are not identical. In this dissertation, I attempt to describe public organizations in their own setting by discussing three important topics in public organization theory: (1) innovation adoption in the public sector; (2) representative bureaucracy; and (3) decline and death of public organizations.

In Chapter II, I scrutinize …

Evaluating State Policy Interventions For Opioid Abuse And Diversion: The Impact On Consumers, Healthcare Providers, And The U.S. Market For Prescription Opioids, Amie Goodin

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

Prescription opioid pain reliever utilization has been increasing since the 1990s, due in part to changes in recommendations for the treatment of chronic pain, but also to abuse and diversion. One innovative policy solution to the abuse and diversion of prescription opioids is state prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), which provide prescribers and other selected parties with patient controlled substance dispensation history; thereby, correcting an information asymmetry problem between prescribers and patients.

The widespread implementation of state PDMPs, which vary in program design and requirements, has resulted in a variety of intended and unintended consequences. Previous PDMP evaluations have suggested …

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

This dissertation analyzes the linkages between new media and the possible emergence of the youngest members of the voting population (the “digital native” generation, who have grown up concurrently with the rise of the internet as a means of communication). The main question is whether this digital native generation will have more civic and political participation due to their use of online news sources and social media communication on news media websites and elsewhere on the internet. Regression analyses are used to explain civic and political participation, using American National Election Studies (ANES) from the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections. …

Egocentric Conversion Social Networks: Context, Process And Identity In Explaining Conversion To And Reversion From Islam In The United States, Sakin Erin

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

This dissertation investigates conversion to Islam in the United States analyzing egocentric networks of 30 converts to Islam and that of 30 people in the control group. By comparing Michigan, where there is a large Muslim community, to Kentucky, where there is smaller community, it demonstrates that conversion occurs through weak Muslim ties in the former, while it occurs through strong ties in the latter. Conversion is a life changing event with lasting consequences on both the structure and composition of people’s egocentric social network. The egocentric social network data from prior-to-conversion and post-conversion indicate that conversion influences change in …

The Transition To Resilience: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Communities, John D. Johnson Jan 2015

The Transition To Resilience: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Communities, John D. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

This dissertation examines the question of how communities understand their risk related to global economic and environmental problems and how communities respond to those risks. Specifically, using comparative case study, this dissertation examines the sustainability efforts of two communities, Oberlin, Ohio and Berea, Kentucky. Both communities have created advanced sustainability efforts over more than a decade of work and both communities have well-developed partnerships with the colleges in their communities. It finds that communities are responding to both global risks related to climate change and energy price volatility, but also are making efforts to resolve more localized social problems and …

Phase I consisted of surveys administered to tactical officers in Kentucky and measured romantic partner attachment, organizational and operational police stressors. Research questions examined how operational and organizational stress correlated with attachment while controlling for demographics. Analysis indicated that holding a rank above an officer …

The Role Of Phlpp In Pancreatic Cancer, Alena J. Smith Jan 2015

The Role Of Phlpp In Pancreatic Cancer, Alena J. Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Medicine has come a long way in recent years with reliable treatments for many cancers. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has very few treatment options available. PDAC has a dismal 5 year survival rate of 4% and a median survival span of 6 months from point of diagnosis; with a high rate of chemotherapy and radiation resistance. A better understanding of the molecular events leading to cancer progression is needed in order to improve the treatment and prognosis of PDAC patients. We begin to elucidate the functional importance of PHLPP on suppressing progression and metastasis of PDAC. PHLPP belongs to a …

Physiological Function Of Fus: An Rna Binding Protein In Motor Neuron Disease, Liuqing Yang Jan 2015

Physiological Function Of Fus: An Rna Binding Protein In Motor Neuron Disease, Liuqing Yang

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

FUS is an RNA binding protein implicated in the motor neuron disease— amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease). ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive motor neuron death. Mutations in the FUS gene cause about 4% of familial ALS (FUS ALS). Mutated FUS protein mislocalizes from the motor neuron nucleus to the cytoplasm and forms inclusions in the cytoplasm. It is unclear how FUS mislocalization induces motor neuron dysfunction and degeneration. This dissertation research was designed to investigate the physiological functions of FUS in the nucleus, with a purpose to shed light on the pathogenesis …

Physical Interactions Between Neuropilin And Vegfrs, Integrins In Regulating Endothelial Cell Functions, Xiaobo Li

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

The neuropilin (Nrp) family consists of multifunctional cell surface receptors with critical roles in a number of different cell and tissue types. A core aspect of Nrp function is ligand-dependent cellular adhesion and migration, where it controls the multistep process of cellular motility through integration of ligand binding, receptor coupling and signaling via the coordinated action of its extracellular and intracellular domains. While Nrp regulates cellular adhesion and motility in the cardiovascular and nervous systems under physiological conditions, the emerging pathological role of Nrp in tumor cell migration and metastasis has been identified and provides motivation for continued efforts toward …

Beryllium Nitrate Supports Fibroblast Migration As An Essential Component Of Skin And Limb Regeneration In Axolotls, Adam Boyd Cook Jan 2015

Beryllium Nitrate Supports Fibroblast Migration As An Essential Component Of Skin And Limb Regeneration In Axolotls, Adam Boyd Cook

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Tissue regeneration in salamanders is a robust process that is not easily interrupted or altered. Therefore, inhibiting regeneration provides a means to interrogate the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating this complex event. Here we show that application of a relatively low concentration of beryllium nitrate solution (100mM) causes a delay in skin regeneration and severely alters normal limb regeneration. We provide evidence showing a beryllium-induced reduction in dermal fibroblast migration in vivo and in vitro. We link this phenomenon to delayed regeneration of the skin and abnormal blastema formation resulting in limb patterning defects during regeneration. Though our …

Unveiling Novel Aspects Of D-Amino Acid Metabolism In The Model Bacterium Pseudomonas Putida Kt2440, Atanas D. Radkov

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

D-amino acids (D-AAs) are the α-carbon enantiomers of L-amino acids (L- AAs), the building blocks of proteins in known organisms. It was largely believed that D-AAs are unnatural and must be toxic to most organisms, as they would compete with the L-counterparts for protein synthesis. Recently, new methods have been developed that allow scientists to chromatographically separate the two AA stereoisomers. Since that time, it has been discovered that D-AAs are vital molecules and they have been detected in many organisms. The work of this dissertation focuses on their place in bacterial metabolism. This specific area was selected due to …
