Similar Promotion Of Abeta1-42 Fibrillogenesis By Native Apolipoprotein E Epsilon3 And Epsilon4 Isoforms, David Sweeney, Ralph Martins, Harry Levine, Jonathan D. Smith, Sam Gandy

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

The apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele contributes to the genetic susceptibility underlying a large proportion (~40-60%) of typical, sporadic Alzheimer disease. Apolipoprotein E deficient mice made transgenic for human apolipoprotein E epsilon4 accumulate excess cerebral amyloid when compared to similarly prepared mice expressing human apolipoprotein E epsilon3. Therefore, it is important to search for relevant interactions(s) between apolipoprotein E epsilon4 and Abeta in order to clarify the biological role for apolipoprotein E epsilon4 in Alzheimer disease. Using a thioflavine T (ThT)-based assay, we have investigated the effects of native human apolipoprotein E isoforms on the kinetics of Abeta fibrillogenesis. No obvious …

BACKGROUND: Establishing genomic resources for closely related species will provide comparative insights that are crucial for understanding diversity and variability at multiple levels of biological organization. We developed ESTs for Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) and Eastern tiger salamander (A. tigrinum tigrinum), species with deep and diverse research histories.

RESULTS: Approximately 40,000 quality cDNA sequences were isolated for these species from various tissues, including regenerating limb and tail. These sequences and an existing set of 16,030 cDNA sequences for A. mexicanum were processed to yield 35,413 and 20,599 high quality ESTs for A. mexicanum and A. t. tigrinum, respectively. Because the …

Il-5 Links Adaptive And Natural Immunity In Reducing Atherosclerotic Disease, Alan Daugherty, Debra L. Rateri, Victoria L. King

Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

Oxidized LDL induces changes in several facets of the immune system, although the relationships between these facets and their contributions to atherogenesis have yet to be fully elucidated. A report in this issue of the JCI provides a novel demonstration of the adaptive immune system influencing the production of natural antibodies. The results demonstrate that injection of malondialdehyde-modified LDL promotes a Th2 response that in turn increases the titers of the natural antibody T15/EO6, which recognizes the oxidized phospholipid POVPC. Atherosclerotic lesion size in LDL receptor–deficient mice is reduced as a consequence of the increase in natural antibody titers, and …

The New Promised Land: Black-White Convergence In The American South, 1940-2000, Jacob L. Vigdor

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The black-white earnings gap has historically been larger in the South than in other regions of the United States. This paper shows that this regional gap has closed over time, and in fact reversed during the last decades of the twentieth century. Three proposed explanations for this trend focus on changing patterns of selective migration, reduced discrimination in Southern labor markets, and lower levels of school segregation and school resource disparities in the modern South relative to the North. Evidence suggests that reductions in Southern labor market discrimination explain rapid regional convergence in racial wage gaps between 1960 and 1980. …

The Rise Of Low-Skill Immigration In The South, George J. Borjas Jul 2004

The Rise Of Low-Skill Immigration In The South, George J. Borjas

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The 1990s witnessed a significant geographic redistribution of immigration away from the traditional immigrant-receiving states, mainly California, and towards other parts of the country, mainly the Southern states that have not historically been immigrant-receiving states. This paper documents the impact of this change in immigrant settlement patterns on the skill endowment of the workforce in Southern states. The empirical analysis indicates that the recent change in immigrant settlement patterns led to the rise of a sizable foreign-born low-skill workforce in the South, particularly outside Florida and Texas. This workforce developed both as a result of increased settlement of many newly …
