Herbage Quality At Continuous Grazing With Dairy Cows At Different N-Intakes And Sward Types, K Soegaard, O Aaes
Herbage Quality At Continuous Grazing With Dairy Cows At Different N-Intakes And Sward Types, K Soegaard, O Aaes
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Herbage quality was examined in paddocks continuously grazed by dairy cows fed supplements with low and high N. There were two sward types for each level of supplement, i.e. fertilized perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) and unfertilized perennial ryegrass/white clover (Trifolium repens L) with a mean clover content of 49 % of dry matter. Decreasing N-intake from 307 to 140 g N cow -1 d -1 by feeding low-N supplements had a small influence on herbage quality in spite of the reduced N-output via urine and faeces. Variation in herbage quality was large during the growing season. The fibre concentration …
Effect Of Calcium Nutrition On The Formation Of Calcium Oxalate In Kikuyu Grass, J P. Marais, A D. Barnabas, D L. Figenschou
Effect Of Calcium Nutrition On The Formation Of Calcium Oxalate In Kikuyu Grass, J P. Marais, A D. Barnabas, D L. Figenschou
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this investigation was to study the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in situ in kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) and to determine the effect of calcium uptake on the soluble and insoluble oxalate content of the grass. Oxalate crystals were more abundant in high-calcium leaves than in low-calcium leaves. Electron microscopy showed that the oxalate crystals are formed in association with globular electron-dense bodies in the vacuole of certain cells. The calcium content of kikuyu is increased by increasing the calcium level of the growth medium. However, the increased amount of calcium taken up by the …

Genetic Variation In Perennial Ryegrass For Volatile Fatty Acid Production In Rumen Fluid, H.J P. Marvin, E N. Van Loo, O Dolstra, C.H A. Snijders, D Reheul, J W. Cone
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In perennial ryegrass genetic variation was shown not only for in vitro organic matter degradation (OMD) in rumen fluid and neutral detergent fibre content (NDF) but also for production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) upon in vitro incubation in rumen fluid. The correlations among concentrations of VFAs in the incubation fluid were high. OMD and NDF, on the other hand, were poorly correlated to the VFA concentrations.

Characterization Of Legume And Grass Residues Following In Vitro And In Sacco Ruminal Digestion, D.J R. Cherney, J H. Cherney, A H. Davidson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Objectives were to characterize the influence of forage species and maturity on dry matter degradation. Averaged across maturities, alfalfa and red clover were lower in NDF content (39 and 30% NDF, respectively) than reed canarygrass and timothy (59 and 54% NDF, respectively). The NDF of the DM residues in grass remained relatively unchanged over time, while NDF of the DM residue in legume increased rapidly for 9 h before becoming relatively constant. Alfalfa incubated in vitro (42% NDF) compared to reed canarygrass (58% NDF) contained more ND soluble material (39% vs. 25%), and more pepsin soluble material (22 vs. 18%). …

Protein Degradability Effect And Supplementation Level On Pasture Utilization, A.V M. Franco, P De Andrade, G L. Franco
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective was to determine the effect of protein degradability and supplement level on forage degradation. Steers fistulated were utilizated in brachiaria (Brachiaria brizantha) pasture. A randomized block design was used with a control treatment and supplements according to a factorial scheme combining low, medium and high protein degradability with supplementation levels: low, medium and high analysed as principal treatments and incubation time as splitplot by SAS. Nylon bags were incubated at 4; 8; 12; 24; 48; 72; 96 and 120 hours to determine DM, CP and NDF degradation. There was no effect (P>0.05) of protein degradability …
Energetic Feed Value Of Grassland Products In Ruminants, A Chudy
Energetic Feed Value Of Grassland Products In Ruminants, A Chudy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A method for calculating the energetic feed value, based on the digestible nutrients and on the relations of the utilisation of the energy of the nutrients (carbohydrates = 100) for ATP syntheses is described. This relative scale is a nominal feed value (NFV). It characterises the ATP potential of the feedstuffs and is therefore equivalent to the efficiency of utilisation of the feed energy in the catabolic metabolism (non-thermal maintenance, muscular work (movement)) and energy costs for syntheses as well as the productive performance as energy retention in animal products. Therefore this scale secures a precise precognition of the animal …
Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise's Impact On Cognitive Functions In Eighth Grade Students., Heather Erwin, Sarah Schreiber
Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise's Impact On Cognitive Functions In Eighth Grade Students., Heather Erwin, Sarah Schreiber
Kinesiology and Health Promotion Faculty Publications
The present study examined the impact of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on cognitive abilities in eighth grade students at one middle school in southeastern US. It is known that youth do not meet recommended physical activity levels, yet there is research demonstrating a clear connection between aerobic exercise and academic performance. There is a gap in evidence regarding anaerobic exercise and cognitive capabilities. If professionals know which type of exercise is most beneficial for enhancing cognition in youth, it will behoove them to incorporate these practices in physical education and other areas throughout the school day for students. Thus, this …

Impacts Of Grazed Pastures On Soil Water And Nitrogen Status In Cropping Systems, J A. Baldlock, W D. Bellotti, A D. Moore, I Yunusa
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In southern Australia pastures precede wheat in many rotations. In recent years the quality (legume content) of many pastures has declined and the value of pastures in rotation with cereals has been questioned. This research aims to develop a more complete understanding of the impact of pastures on crop production through greater knowledge of the below ground processes of soil water and soil inorganic nitrogen. In this study, the impacts of annual barley grass (Hordium leporinum) and barrel medic (Medicago truncatula) pastures on soil water and inorganic nitrogen status at the start of a subsequent wheat growing season were investigated …
Post-Harvest Residue Management Methods In Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Production On The Eastern Canadian Prairies, D R. Bruce, G B. Coukell, E B. Wright
Post-Harvest Residue Management Methods In Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Production On The Eastern Canadian Prairies, D R. Bruce, G B. Coukell, E B. Wright
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Studies were conducted to evaluate methods of crop residue management in seed production fields of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Five residue management systems were evaluated at two sites for effectiveness of maintaining seed yield in comparison to the traditional method of burning crop residues. At Selkirk, MB, open burning applied shortly after harvest was the most effective, followed closely by dethatching of the stand. A later implemented trial at Stead, MB indicated that late season burning of residues reduced the seed yield compared to baling the residue only. All residue removal methods increased the seed yield over bale only. …

Storage Losses In Large Round Bale Using Various Storage Methods For Six And Eighteen Months, R C. Reeder, D H. Samples, H M. Bartholomew, S L. Boyles
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Grass hay was baled with a variety of balers and tying materials in June, 1994 and 1995, at Jackson, Ohio. The bales were prepared and stored several ways. Waste hay accounted for less than ten percent of the dry matter after storage for six and eighteen months in all cases except one (a plastic wrap system intended for use with haylage). Bales stored inside had no waste. The best outdoor storage system, with less than one percent waste, used a ‘bale bonnet’ (top half covered with a plastic sheet) with the bale on a slatted pallet. One group of bales …

Insecticidal Activity Of N-Formylloline, D L. Dahlman, M R. Siegel, L P. Bush
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Several insect species were sensitive to N-formylloline, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid found in significant concentrations in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea L.) infected with Neotyphodium coenophialum (= Acremonium coenophialum) Glenn, Bacon et Hanlin. Topical or injected doses were toxic in a dose dependent manner. Acute doses resulted in quick incapacitation; lower doses caused behavioral changes, uncoordinated movements, tremors, etc. Insects tested included green bug, bird cherry-oat aphid, large milkweed bug, spined soldier bug, American cockroach, house fly, face fly, cat flea and Japanese beetle.
Integrating Satellite Images And Species-Based Vegetation Maps To Manage Native Grasslands, M Hall-Beyer, Q.H. J. Gwyn
Integrating Satellite Images And Species-Based Vegetation Maps To Manage Native Grasslands, M Hall-Beyer, Q.H. J. Gwyn
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Satellite image mapping of grasslands is problematic when species diversity occurs at a sub-pixel scale. We propose a method, called melody classification, to map ground cover units that group several spectral classes (colours). Melodies are defined as the normalized expected frequencies of each class within the ground cover unit. Starting from an unsupervised classification, an image is created showing the probability of finding each spectral class in the vicinity of each pixel. Each pixel is classified by comparing the melody in its neighbourhood with that of each ground cover unit. Accuracies are greatly enhanced over those of supervised classification. Melody …

Qualitative Evaluation Of D.H.P. (Dihidroxipiridine) In The Urine Of Buffaloes Fed With Leucaena, P B. Alcantara, T A. Ferreira, D A. Beisman, A.M F. Pereira
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the DHP elimination in the urine of buffaloes fed with three levels of leucaena (0,10 and 20g of leucaena's DM/kg LW0.75), plus corn silage at 2.5% of LW in D.M. The main purpose was to estimate the levels of mimosine toxicity in those resistant animals. Data showed that DHP started to be eliminated at the first urination in both levels of leucaena. This occurred one hour after ingestion. DHP was present up to the third urination (5 hours after ingestion) in the highest level.
Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl
Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Production of biosolids has been increasing consistently in the last few years. Land application of wastes is being regarded as an alternative means of disposal and as a source of inexpensive fertilizer material. Pastures are particularly attractive in this regard since the areas occupied are extensive and large amounts of fertilizer are required for adequate production. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various rates of biosolids on bahiagrass yield and quality. Forage samples were collected from each plot from April to December. Significant increases in dry matter production, crude protein content and in vitro digestibility …

Liming Of Acid Soils. I. Influence On Wheat Yield And Availability Of Soil Nutrients, C D. Tsadilas, V Samaras, J Varvarousis, N Maslaris
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
With a two year field experiment the influence of liming of strongly acid soils on wheat yield and on the availability of soil nutrients were studied. The results showed that liming increased soil pH and decreased exchangeable Al and available Fe and Zn. Wheat uptake of Mn was decreased, while P and Cu uptake were increased. Wheat biomass (hay plus seed) production and grain yield were also significantly increased.

Nitrogen Fertilization In Winter Forage Crops In The Southeast Of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), M A. Marino, A Mazzanti, H E. Echeverria, F Andrade
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The potential growth in the winter annual forage crops in the Southeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), is limited by the availability of nitrogen during the winter period. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth of the two main winter forage crops: oat (Avena sativa) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) was analyzed. Under winter-spring temperatures a higher growth potential was shown by annual ryegrass. The critical N doses were 150 and 100 kg.ha-1 of N for oat and annual ryegrass, respectively. The nitrogen dilution curves and the critical N concentration in the forage were determined. The …

Effects Of Agropastoral Systems On Microbially Bound Phosphorus In Low P Acid Soils, A Oberson, D K. Friesen, C Morel, H Tiessen, E Frossard
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effect of agropastoral systems replacing native savanna on microbially bound phosphorus (Pmic) in low P acid soils was investigated. Chloroform released P (PChl) was measured to estimate Pmic. In a long-term improved pasture experiment, PChl was higher in grass-legume (GL) than grass-only pasture (GO). Although the P balance was slightly higher in GO than in GL, available P contents followed the same trend as PChl suggesting that the presence of legumes enhances the maintenance of P fertility. In a rice-pasture system, PChl was higher than under rice monocrop indicating an effect of the cropping system on PChl that goes …
Long-Term Effects Of Co2 Enrichment And Temperate Increase On Forage Quality In A Temperate Grass, J F. Soussana, J M. Besle, I Chabaux, P Loiseau, P C. De Faccio Carvalho
Long-Term Effects Of Co2 Enrichment And Temperate Increase On Forage Quality In A Temperate Grass, J F. Soussana, J M. Besle, I Chabaux, P Loiseau, P C. De Faccio Carvalho
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Perennial ryegrass swards were grown during two years at two N fertilizer supplies in elevated (700 ppm) or ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration at outdoor temperature and at + 3°C in elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and temperature increase had only minor impacts on the digestibility and on the fiber composition of the cut material. On average, the water soluble carbohydrate concentration of the leaf laminae was doubled in elevated CO2, whereas a 3°C temperature increase reduced this concentration by 25 %.
Co2 Gas Fluxes In Grazing Pasture, T Oku, S Shibata, S Takahashi, M Shibayama
Co2 Gas Fluxes In Grazing Pasture, T Oku, S Shibata, S Takahashi, M Shibayama
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
CO2 gas fluxes in grazing pastures were measured directly by the eddy correlation method to determine whether grasslands function as carbon sinks or sources. Observations revealed daytime CO2 absorption fluxes to grassland and nighttime CO2 emission fluxes to atmosphere. In 1993, the daily amounts of CO2 absorbed by grassland were larger than those of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere during the measuring period in spite of a cool summer and consequently lower level of solar radiation. In 1994, we obtained reverse carbon budgets especially on very hot days, which resulted from a different fluctuation pattern of the CO2 gas fluxes. …
Pfra Community Pastures- The Canadian Communal Grazing Experience And Multiple Values Of Public Grasslands, H R. Cook
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) Community Pastures origins are rooted in a climate catastrophe response that assembled initial areas of overgrazed native range and severely eroded cereal cropland in the Palliser Triangle into community pastures as a public conservation mechanism. Today this conservation system has grown to encompass 929,000 hectares in total that serve a multiple set of area objectives with important social, economic and ecological benefits. Management of these pastures has expanded considerably, necessitating close cooperation between local livestock producers, government agency staff and other users of the resource. Over the last half century a unique communal grazing …

Degradability And Fermentescibility According To Fiber Content In Low Quality Forages, A Dieng, A Buldgen, Ph Lecomte, K G. Toussaint
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The nylon bag technique and the gas-test method were compared with 6 different roughages representing a wide range of fiber contents in samples collected in the Senegalese Groundnut Basin. The results showed high correlation coefficients and low residual standard errors between the chemical composition of the roughages (mainly the acid detergent fiber fraction) and their degradability or fermentescibility. Reliable relationships between the two methods were also identified.

Rehabilitating Sandy Acid Soils In The Sahelo-Sudanese Region With Andropogon Gayanus Kunth Var. Bisquamulatus, A Drought Resistant Savannah Grass, A Buldgen, A Dieng
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Root growth of Guinea grass (Andropogon gayanus Kunth var. Bisquamulatus) and the effects of the crop on soil fertility were studied in Senegal (field conditions). The physiological behaviour of the graminae was also monitored during a drying cycle in a controlled environment (Belgium). The growth of the root system was remarkable during the rainy season. Root turn-over greatly improves soil organic matter content after two years of cultivation. During the drying cycle, the plant performed an osmotic adjustment through K+ ions and sugar accumulation in the cell sap.

Extensification Of Sheep Grazing Systems: Effects On Soil Nutrients, Species Composition And Animal Production, C A. Marriott, I J. Gordon
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effects of ceasing fertiliser inputs to perennial ryegrass/white clover swards, combined with patterns of seasonal grazing, on soil nutrient status, floristic composition and animal production (ewes and single lambs) were studied in a long-term experiment at three upland sites in Scotland. Four unfertilised treatments had a factorial combination of seasonal grazing in summer and autumn at two sward heights (4 and 8 cm). There was also an ungrazed, unfertilised control and a fertilised treatment (140 kg N/ha plus maintenance P and K), grazed at 4 cm sward height in both seasons. All treatments were imposed annually from 1990/91. By …

This Be The Beloved Curse: Learning To Love Ever-Evolving Born-Digital Description, Ruth E. Bryan, Megan M. Mummey, Andrew Mcdonnell
Library Presentations
The title of the presentation, “This be the beloved curse” is taken from Philip Larkin’s poem “This be the curse.” In it, Larkin describes the cycle of life where children are messed up by their parents, who, with the best intentions, “...fill you with the faults they had/and add some extra, just for you.” He goes on to explain, though, that our parents, in their turn, were equally messed up “...by fools in old-style hats and coats…”, handing on what Larkin terms “misery” from one generation to another.
As archivists, and especially as archivists working with digital formats, our “beloved …

Active And Retroactive Digital Newspaper Preservation, Andrew Mcdonnell
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The University of Kentucky Libraries’ (UKL) long-running efforts to document and provide access to the state’s history via newspaper preservation have necessarily evolved over the last 80 years. As news formats and preservation technologies have changed, particularly in relation to born-digital media, the libraries’ efforts have had to keep pace. The race to preserve these materials before they disappear or are locked away on media inaccessible to modern computers is not always chronologically linear, though. Digital archivists and librarians must sometimes straddle multiple generations of technology to successfully migrate, capture, and otherwise preserve digital publications, and there is no single …
Best Practices For Maintenance Of Traffic On Interstate Pavement Rehabilitation Projects, Catherine Keathley, Ryan Griffith, Rachel Catchings
Best Practices For Maintenance Of Traffic On Interstate Pavement Rehabilitation Projects, Catherine Keathley, Ryan Griffith, Rachel Catchings
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Across the United States, aging roadway infrastructure has led state departments of transportation (DOTs) to increase their focus on pavement rehabilitation projects. These projects upgrade existing infrastructure to meet the needs of current levels of vehicle use. On interstate rehabilitation projects, maintenance of traffic (MOT) is an especially important consideration. Having a good MOT plan for completing construction work is critical for maintaining facility capacity while ensuring the safety of the traveling public and roadway construction staff. This study explores on behalf of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) best practices for MOT on interstate pavement rehabilitation projects. Based on a …
