High-Carbonate, Low-Silica, High-Calcium Stone In The High Bridge Group (Upper Ordovician), Mason County, North-Central Kentucky, Warren H. Anderson, Lance S. Barron
Information Circular--KGS
The High Bridge Group (Middle Ordovician) of northeastern Kentucky is a major source of limestone and dolomite for construction, agricultural, and industrial stone. These industries require carbonate rocks of high chemical purity. Chemical analyses of foot-by-foot samples from a Mason County core show that three zones of high-calcium and several thick zones of high-carbonate and low-silica stone are present in the High Bridge at a mineable depth. Mason County is located in northeastern Kentucky, on the Ohio River, and offers river access to transportation to the metropolitan Covington-Cincinnati market and the northern portion of the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field for …

A User’S Guide For By Product And Discarded Material Utilization In Highway Construction And Maintenance, Kamyar C. Mahboub, David Q. Hunsucker
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report presents a user's guide for an expert decision-making system that utilizes findings of an extensive literature search and review conducted as part of this study. The literature search and review were conducted to determine current attitudes and document available technical data relative to the use of recyclable and recoverable materials in highway construction and maintenance activities. Specifically, the literature search focused upon the engineering, economic, and performance aspects of using recyclable and recoverable materials in highway construction and maintenance projects. The effort centered upon asphalt and Portland cement concrete pavement recycling, discarded tire recycling, reuse of paint removal …
Preliminary Map Of The Structure Of The Precambrian Surface In Eastern Kentucky, James A. Drahovzal, Martin C. Noger
Preliminary Map Of The Structure Of The Precambrian Surface In Eastern Kentucky, James A. Drahovzal, Martin C. Noger
Map and Chart--KGS
This preliminary interpretation of the Precambrian unconformity surface in eastern Kentucky is based on data available to the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) as of November 1994. In early 1995, additional data became available to the KGS. Subsequent work using the new data should result in a more complete interpretation of the area within the next several years.
The map illustrates the Rome Trough and associated structures of the Precambrian surface, and as such contributes to an understanding of the regional geology, geologic evolution, distribution of energy and mineral resources, and potential geologic hazards. While it cannot be considered a prospecting …

Farm Worker Is Killed In Tractor Rollover, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Farm Worker Is Killed In Tractor Rollover, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging
A 42-year-old farm worker was killed when the tractor he was operating rolled over on him. The tractor was not equipped with Roll Over Protective Structures (ROPS) or a seat belt. The victim had been bush hogging alone in a field the morning of the incident. Having completed a lower pasture, he proceeded up a single lane loose gravel road carved in the side of the hill. The left side going up the hill was covered with trees and brush. The right side fell quickly off to form a steep embankment. As the victim maneuvered the tractor up the hill, …

Retiree Is Killed When Tractor Overturns, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging
A 61-year-old retiree was crushed to death when the tractor he was operating turned over on him. At 4:30 pm, the victim was bush-hogging a pasture on his farm, driving a tractor pulling a five-foot-wide, three-point hitch rotary bush-hog. The tractor was not equipped with a Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS) or a seat belt. Mowing the outer perimeter of the pasture, the victim was on the first pass outlining the field. An eroded ravine forced the victim to go up the hill along the edge of the rose-briar-filled 18-foot-wide ditch. The left front and rear tractor wheels began sliding …

Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging
A 68-year-old male farmer was killed when the tractor he was operating overturned. The victim was driving his tractor down the roadway to a farm near his home. He was hired to bush hog on a neighbor's property. The tractor was not equipped with a Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS) or a seat belt. Defining Religion: Death And Anxiety In An Afro-Brazilian Cult, James M. Donovan
Defining Religion: Death And Anxiety In An Afro-Brazilian Cult, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This dissertation clarifies the anthropological concept of religion by crafting the most useful scientific definition. The first chapter illustrates the confusion surrounding this term, and argues that the comparative method of anthropology requires that this imprecision be removed. Reviewing the four types of definitions of religion extant in the literature -- Content, Behavioral/Performative, Mental, and Functional -- Chapter 1 concludes that the best definition will be a generative functional definition. The second chapter supports this conclusion by finding that an independent discipline, American constitutional law, has arrived at the same understanding.
Chapter 3 details the nature of definitions and the …
Risk Management For Lawyers, William H. Fortune, Dulaney O’Roark
Risk Management For Lawyers, William H. Fortune, Dulaney O’Roark
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Lawyers are under siege. We have become objects of scorn, ridicule, and occasional hatred. If you take your child to the Stephen Spielberg movie Jurassic Park, be prepared for the cheers when the cloned Tyrannosaurus Rex gobbles the lawyer—not a bad guy at all—cowering in the outhouse. In San Francisco a client burst into a California law firm and killed eight and wounded six persons before taking his own life. In response, the president of the California bar linked lawyer-bashing to hate crimes and prevailed on the Miller Brewing Company to withdraw a television commercial depicting a "lawyer-roping rodeo" …

Part-Time Farmer Drowns In Pond After Tractor Rollover, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging
On Sunday May 22, 1994, a 54-year-old part-time farmer died when the tractor he was operating rolled over, pinning him under water. The victim was pulling a wagon on which two children and one adult were riding on their way to the farmer's fishing pond. As the tractor approached the pond down a 14 degree slope, it began to slide on the loose ground. The tractor turned 180 degrees on the bank of the pond, then turned over into 4.5 feet of water. Evidence at the scene and from interviews with a rescuer indicate that the tractor rolled one half …
