CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Background: Past studies suggested an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). In 1987, University of North Carolina (UNC) Hospitals Family Practice Center clinicians were approached for a control population to study this association. Methods: One hundred fives patients attending the UNC Hospitals Neoplasia Clinic with biopsy-proven CIN 2 or 3 and 268 control patients attending the UNC Family Practice Center for a routine Papanicolaou smear were enrolled in this case-control study. Case and control patients consented to having an additional cervical specimen taken and to being interviewed. The cervical specimens were classified by the Southern blot …

Cost Estimating And Forecasting For Highway Work In Kentucky, James D. Stevens
Cost Estimating And Forecasting For Highway Work In Kentucky, James D. Stevens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
There is a need for a better cost estimating and forecasting for highway work in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. KRS45.245 grants the Interim Joint Committee on Transportation oversight of the biennial highway plan, including a review of all authorized highway project phases that exceed their estimates by 15%. In recent years, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has suffered the loss of many resources necessary to produce good cost estimated.
Estimates developed using current methods are not sufficiently accurate to preclude cost overruns in excess of 15%. During the biennium 134 overruns, totaling over $69 million, have been submitted to the Committee. …
Marketing Quality Alfalfa Hay, Garry D. Lacefield
Marketing Quality Alfalfa Hay, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Alfalfa hay is a potentially marketable-profitable product if--if quality is satisfactory to meet buyer's needs, if it is packaged such that it meets buyer's feeding program and can be transported efficiently, if in sufficient quantity, if storage site is accessible by truck or trailer, and if it is competitively priced. Meeting these minimum criteria only means the hay is potentially marketable; only after it has been sold does it become potentially profitable.
Fencing For Optimum Grazing, Larry W. Turner
Fencing For Optimum Grazing, Larry W. Turner
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Controlled or rotational grazing can result in better utilization of forage resources. By better forage management through controlled grazing, producers may increase profitability of cattle/forage systems. To effectively develop a controlled grazing system, however, fencing must be used to subdivide the pasture into sub-fields or paddocks. The animals may then be rotated among the paddocks to optimize forage and beef or dairy production from the system. Alfalfa grazing can play an important part in such a system.
Planning the "best", or optimum, fencing strategy should be done with the overall goal in mind of improving profitability. Key factors that describe …
Apparatus And Method Of High-Pressure Waterjet Assisted Cooling/Lubrication In Machining, Radovan Kovacevic
Apparatus And Method Of High-Pressure Waterjet Assisted Cooling/Lubrication In Machining, Radovan Kovacevic
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Patents
An apparatus for high-pressure waterjet assisted machining includes a drive motor, spindle and rotary cutting tool with cutting inserts. The apparatus further includes a high-pressure intensifier pump providing cutting fluid at a pressure greater than 50,000 psi. A cutting fluid conduit system in the rotary cutting tool includes a main flow channel, a distribution manifold, a plurality of radially extending feed channels and a plurality of cooperating nozzles for delivering fluid behind the cutting inserts. The cutting fluid then passes through one or more apertures in the inserts into an interface defined by the inserts of the cutting tool and …

Kentucky Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge Survey, J. Keeling, Paul M. Mcginley
KWRRI Research Reports
A survey of solids removal from municipal wastewater treatment plants in Kentucky was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Kentucky. The survey was made using both a mailed form and a followed up phone communication through a period from June, 1993 to April, 1994. The results of that survey were compiled using a spreadsheet program and are available on diskette from the authors. The results of the survey are also presented in the eight Tables herein.

Comparative Analysis Of Labor Mediation Using A Bargaining Strength Model, Alvin L. Goldman
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The comparison of different legal systems offers a number of analytical and research advantages, one of which is that it provides a laboratory for observing differences and similarities in the ways in which common regulatory and dispute resolution models operate in similar and dissimilar environments. This Essay uses that laboratory to illustrate how the bargaining strength model presented in Settling for More: Mastering Negotiation Strategies and Techniques can be applied in analyzing mediatory interventions and provide a better understanding of (a) how such interventions can be utilized most effectively, (b) when they are useful, (c) when they are superfluous, and …

Evaluation Of Electronic Truck Monitoring, Jerry G. Pigman, Joseph D. Crabtree
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Automatic vehicle identification (AVI) and weigh-in-motion (WIM) equipment were installed at the northbound weigh/enforcement station on 1-65 in Simpson County, Kentucky. The objectives were to determine the reliability and accuracy of the equipment and to determine the benefits/costs for the trucking industry and enforcement agencies.
The test site for evaluation of the equipment became operational in July 1991 and the evaluation continued through June 1993. AVI equipment was provided by Amtech Corporation and WIM equipment by International Road Dynamics. Participating motor carriers were United Parcel Service and Averitt Express, with a total of 114 trucks equipped with transponders. The system …
