Analysis Of Accidents In Construction And Maintenance Work Zones, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report includes documentation of the two following phases of the study : 1) analysis of statewide accidents for the period 1983 through 1986 in which "road under construction" was listed as a contributing factor; and 2) analysis of accident data and traffic control devices used at 20 case study locations. At the case study locations, accident data were analyzed for a three-year period before construction and compared to the period during construction.

Results from the statewide analysis indicate that even though the level of construction and maintenance activity is higher and traffic volumes have increased, there have not been …

Forage Production On Reclaimed Surface Mined Land In Eastern Kentucky, William O. Thom, H. B. Rice Apr 1988

Forage Production On Reclaimed Surface Mined Land In Eastern Kentucky, William O. Thom, H. B. Rice

Agronomy Notes

Forage crop production for hay or pasture can be important for the utilization of the many acres of reclaimed surface mined land in eastern Kentucky. Even though grasses and legumes are seeded during reclamation to provide ground cover and reduce soil loss, these areas are not usually managed for forage crop production. On the other hand, these vast land areas have the capability to provide significant amounts of desirable grasses or grass-legume mixtures for cattle when well-managed.

Evaluating Hay Quality, William C. Templeton Jr. Feb 1988

Evaluating Hay Quality, William C. Templeton Jr.

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

One of the frustrations to nutritionists interested in the feeding value of roughage has been that with all their book knowledge and technical aids no dependable scheme they could devise would consistently rank forages in feeding value, while the dumb ruminant animal could unerringly detect differences in their nutritive values.
-E. W. Crampton, 1965

Blister Beetles In Alfalfa, C. M. Christensen, Lee H. Townsend Feb 1988

Blister Beetles In Alfalfa, C. M. Christensen, Lee H. Townsend

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Blister beetles are Iong cylindrical beetles that may be black, gray, yellow and brown striped, black with gray margins on the wing covers or black with a red head. These insects are usually found feeding in clusters on alfalfa. They can cause severe sickness and sometimes death when livestock especially horses eat the live or dead beetles. They are usually not found in alfalfa in mid-July and early August which translates to the third or fourth cutting. Blister beetles (black ones, gray margined ones, and yellow striped ones) were collected in very noticeable numbers in several central Kentucky alfalfa fields …

Alfalfa Establishment, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Alfalfa "Queen of the Forage Crops" is the most important forage legume grown in the United States. It is grown over a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Alfalfa has the highest yield potential and the highest feeding value of all adapted perennial forage legumes. It is a versatile crop which can be used for pasture, hay, silage, green-chop, soil improvements and soil conservation. As a result. of this crops many merits; especially yield, quality and versatile use, it can be used successfully in many animal feeding programs.

Soil And Fertility Considerations For Growing Alfalfa, Monroe Rasnake Feb 1988

Soil And Fertility Considerations For Growing Alfalfa, Monroe Rasnake

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Alfalfa is a widely adapted crop which is grown across the United states and in many other counties. However, it is very sensitive to many soil and fertility factors which can limit its productivity. It is important to understand these factors in order to be a successful alfalfa producer.

The Stallion: Breeding Soundness Examination & Reproductive Anatomy, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

A breeding soundness exam of a stallion includes not only examination of various seminal characteristics, but also, the evaluation of the stallion’s physical condition and his ability to perform in the breeding shed. The physical examination should include evaluation of the locomotor system, including muscular, skeletal and neurological factors, as well as the stallion’s visual function.

The most reliable measure of fertility in a stallion is the pregnancy rate he obtains when bred to mares of normal fertility under ideal management. Most stallions selected for evaluation include those about to be, or recently, purchased, those about to enter the breeding …

Nutrition Of The Performance Horse, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky Jan 1988

Nutrition Of The Performance Horse, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

In today’s industry where seconds mean the difference between 1st and “also ran” at the track, our equine athletes must retain a competitive edge. Renewed interest in research about the performance horse’s nutrient needs has allowed horsemen to feed the athletic horse more scientifically than ever before to maintain that edge. Horses can be selected, bred, managed and fed as athletes. However, because knowing the horse’s individuality and nutrient needs is very important, the horseman’s skill in feeding the horse will never be totally replaced, no matter how precise the feeding recommendations.

Nutrition Of The Broodmare, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky Jan 1988

Nutrition Of The Broodmare, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Feeding horses has long been considered an art passed down from generation to generation. However, recent advances are rapidly making horse nutrition a more precise science. Research in horse nutrition has provided valuable information on the nutrient needs of all classes of horses.

In feeding broodmares, you must consider several important factors:

  • nutrient requirements of the particular class of horse being fed,

  • physiological events involved in pregnancy,

  • nutrient content of the feed,

  • physiological limitations to certain rations.

What Is Your Farm's Potential To Pollute Your Drinking Water Supply, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

The following list of questions are a useful guide to assess whether farm and/or home activities or the type of well contribute to polluting your private drinking water well. If you answer "yes" for one or more of the questions than you should begin a program of annual well testing. It is recommended that a coliform bacteria test and nitrate test be performed annually. The annual cost for these tests performed by a testing laboratory is $26.00. There is an additional test that is available that determines if there is the presence of organic halides (chlorinated or brominated organics) called …

Rapid Method For Determining Fertilizer Nutrients In Liquid Dairy And Swine Manures, Joseph L. Taraba Jan 1988

Rapid Method For Determining Fertilizer Nutrients In Liquid Dairy And Swine Manures, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

A rapid on-farm determination is needed to assess the fertilizer contents of liquid manure as it is taken from storage. Rapid determination of a tank load for liquid manure will indicate nutrient changes that occur as manure is removed from a storage which cannot be or is not effectively agitated before manure removal. Effective utilization of animal manures as a fertilizer resource requires a farmer to have a knowledge of the amount of nutrients that he is putting onto the soil. If the producer then reduces the commercial fertilizer, he can realize the fertilizer economic value of the manure. Laboratory …

Reducing Summer Heat Stress In Dairy Cows, Larry W. Turner, John P. Chastain, William L. Crist

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Potential declines in milk production of as much as 20% or more are the reason we need to be concerned about heat stress in dairy cows. Heat stress can reduce feed intake, milk production and reproductive efficiency. There are several options available to Kentucky dairymen to combat heat stress in cows.

1. Drug administration studies using diisopropylamine dichloroacetate (DADA) and diisopropylamine (DIPA) were conducted in Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses to assess physiological effects and develop detection methods.

2. Four horses received 0.08 mg DADA/kg body wt and showed no changes in heart and respiratory rates or body temperature as measured over a 1-hr period after administration. A transient diuretic effect was found to occur in 2 mares dosed with 0.80 mg DADA/kg body wt.

3. A qualitative detection method using thin-layer chromatography was developed to detect DIPA, the major metabolite of DADA in equine urine. A quantitative detection method (lower limit …

Properties Of Anti-Lyb-2-Mediated B-Cell Activation And The Relationship Between Lyb-2 Molecules And Receptors For B-Cell Stimulatory Factor-1 On Murine B Lymphocytes, Subbarao Bondada, Joan Morris, A. R. Baluyut Jan 1988

R. Baluyut

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The murine B-cell differentiation antigen Lyb-2 has been shown to be involved in B-lymphocyte activation and has been postulated by some to be related to a receptor for B-cell stimulatory factor I (BSF-1) (H. Yakura et al., J. Immunol. 137, 1475, 1986). Here we have demonstrated that monoclonal antibody (mAB) to Lyb-2 resembles BSF-1 in its ability to activate small resting B cells and enhancement of surface Ia. Anti-Lyb-2 antibodies bound B cells with very high avidity and were able to induce mobilization of cytosolic-free calcium. Anti-Lyb-2 mAB differs from BSF-1 in that BSF-1 but not anti-Lyb-2 is able to …

Impaired Autoreactive T Cell-Induced T Cell-T Cell Interaction In Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, Subbarao Bondada, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Prakash S. Nagarkatti Jan 1988

Impaired Autoreactive T Cell-Induced T Cell-T Cell Interaction In Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, Subbarao Bondada, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Prakash S. Nagarkatti

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Self-Ia-reactive (autoreactive) L3T4+ T cell clones have been shown earlier to stimulate the proliferation of syngeneic naive L3T4+ T cells and initiate a T cell-T cell (T-T) interaction leading to the generation of immunoregulatory circuits. Since aging has been shown to be associated with a decline of the immune responsiveness, age-related alterations in the T-T interaction was investigated in the present study. Using several I-Ed-specific autoreactive T cell clones isolated from 2- to 3-month-old (young) DBA/2 mice as stimulators, it was observed that L3T4+ T cells from 22- to 24-month-old (aged) DBA/2 mice, failed to …

Family Protection Under Kentucky's Inheritance Laws: Is The Family Really Protected?, Carolyn S. Bratt Jan 1988

Family Protection Under Kentucky's Inheritance Laws: Is The Family Really Protected?, Carolyn S. Bratt

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Courts and legislatures always have granted widows some protection from the economic hardships that their husbands' deaths cause. At the earliest common law, a surviving wife was entitled to dower in the form of a right to remain in her husband's home along with the other heirs after the husband's death. Today, the states have enacted a variety of statutory devices that provide protection for families who might otherwise experience financial hardship upon the death of a spouse or parent. The older types of statutory safeguards take the form of homestead and personal property exemptions. Typically, the probate homestead exemption …

Nutrient Losses From Conventional And No-Till Cornfields, Robert L. Blevins, Wilbur Frye Dec 1987

Nutrient Losses From Conventional And No-Till Cornfields, Robert L. Blevins, Wilbur Frye

Soil Science News and Views

Farmers must be concerned about both the monetary loss and the threat of groundwater and surface water pollution associated with the loss of plant nutrients from their fields. There is also an increasing public concern about pollution and the role of agriculture in nonpoint-source pollution. Movement of water over the surface of the soil as well as through the soil profile increases the potential for loss of water-soluble nutrients, especially nitrates.
