Beef Cattle Production On Surface-Mined Land In Central Appalachia, William O. Thom, H. B. Rice, David Adams, Charles May, Curtis Absher Jan 1990

Beef Cattle Production On Surface-Mined Land In Central Appalachia, William O. Thom, H. B. Rice, David Adams, Charles May, Curtis Absher

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Extensive acreages of reclaimed surface-mined land in Central Appalachia are currently producing forages that can be used in beef cattle production. During reclamation, after these areas were graded, they were seeded with grass and grass-legume mixtures to form a ground cover and to reduce soil loss. Usually in the past these areas have not been managed to provide forages for beef cattle, but they can economically support beef cattle production when managed correctly.

Phenotypic And Functional Properties Of B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Subbarao Bondada, Joan Morris, Richard J. Kryscio

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Phenotypic and functional properties of B lymphocytes from individual young and old mice of different inbred strains were studied. B lymphocyte subpopulation defined by the ratios of the densities of cell surface IgM and IgD were found to be altered with age. However, such alterations in B cell subsets were found only in 30-40% of the old mice. B cell mitogenic responses to anti-μ and anti-Lyb2 antibodies were decreased in a majority of DBA/2 mice. Proliferative responses to LPS and antiμ were reduced only in a minority of CBA/Ca mice but there was a very good correlation in the responsiveness …

Putting A Top Quality Forage Program Together On Your Farm, Richard Brown Phillips

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

You know most of us here, and I am including myself, really don't have a super talent for predicting the future with a great deal of consistency, however, our interest doesn't have to be in predicting, but rather, just primarily in considering potentials and opportunities in the future. What do you say, let's take a little time to look at some of the opportunities in the forage industry. The nation's No. 1 cash crop.

Fertilizer Value Of Cattle Dunghills In A Pasture Field, Kenneth L. Wells, Steve D. Davis Jan 1989

Fertilizer Value Of Cattle Dunghills In A Pasture Field, Kenneth L. Wells, Steve D. Davis

Soil Science News and Views

There were nearly 2.5 million cattle and calves in Kentucky in 1988. Most of these were maintained under pastureland conditions. Nutrients taken up by pasture plants, consumed by cattle, and re-cycled back onto fields by fecal and urine excretions can be a major source of nutrients for maintaining pastureland productivity. In order to estimate the value of this under grazing conditions, observations were made on a pasture field in Casey County, Kentucky, following stocking of the field with cattle.

A Specific Defect In The Proliferative Capacity Of B Cells From Old Mice Stimulated With Autoreactive T Cells, Prakash S. Nagarkatti, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Natarajan Muthusamy, Barbara Rychlik, Subbarao Bondada Jan 1989

A Specific Defect In The Proliferative Capacity Of B Cells From Old Mice Stimulated With Autoreactive T Cells, Prakash S. Nagarkatti, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Natarajan Muthusamy, Barbara Rychlik, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

B lymphocytes from aged mice were found to be defective in their ability to proliferate in response to stimulation with an autoreactive T cell clone D1.4. The differentiative response leading to antibody secretion was also impaired in the auto D1.4 T cell-stimulated B cells from old mice in comparison to similarly stimulated B cells from young mice. The B cells from old mice were competent in activating the autoreactive T cells such that the T cells were induced to proliferate. The B cell defect appears to be restricted to a certain phase of B cell activation, since old mouse B …

The Malformed Mouse Meets The Libr: Secured And Restitutionary Claims To Commingled Funds, Harold R. Weinberg Jan 1989

The Malformed Mouse Meets The Libr: Secured And Restitutionary Claims To Commingled Funds, Harold R. Weinberg

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The "malformed mouse" is section 9-306(4)(d) of the Uniform Commercial Code. It provides a formula that determines the extent to which an insolvent debtor's commingled bank account contains funds subject to a security interest. A special entitlement is necessary because it is impossible to physically distinguish this collateral after commingling. The label malformed mouse is appropriate if one agrees with critics who have questioned the mouse's statutory architecture and underlying rationale. The image of an elusive creature is also apt. The mouse continues to elude understanding, although it has been part of the Code for many years and the subject …

Teratogenic Effects Of Zinc On Embryo-Larval Stages Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas), Barbara A. Ramey Oct 1988

Teratogenic Effects Of Zinc On Embryo-Larval Stages Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas), Barbara A. Ramey

KWRRI Research Reports

The effects of zinc on embryos and larvae of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) were studied using standard 8-day embryo-larval bioassay techniques. The objective was to determine if there was a period in embryonic development which would be the most sensitive to the toxic and teratogenic effects of zinc. Five developmental stages were exposed to 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mg/L. After 96 hr, all animals exposed to 3.0 mg Zn/L were dead. The hatching stage was the most affected by 1.0 mg/L, with only 59% surviving after 96 hr, while the tailbud stage showed essentially control-level survival. However, virtually all …

Canola: A New Cash Crop For Kentucky, James H. Herbek, Lloyd W. Murdock, Dan Kirkland, T. Gray

Soil Science News and Views

For the past few years, Kentucky farmers have become more interested in "alternative" cash crops for their farming operations. One such crop that is starting to receive attention is Canola. Classified as an oil crop, Canola is a type of oilseed rape. Rape is a member of the mustard family and is closely related to turnip. cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and mustards. It is a cool-season annual and an important oilseed crop in many parts of the world that is used for both human consumption and industrial purposes. Major rapeseed production areas are in Europe and Canada. The seed contains approximately …

Formulating Rations For Horses, Craig H. Wood, Stephen Jackson, John P. Baker Jul 1988

Formulating Rations For Horses, Craig H. Wood, Stephen Jackson, John P. Baker

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Formulating rations for horses may be accomplished by some rather basic mathematical calculations or by a series of complex procedures to formulate least-cost rations by computer. The most accurate method would be to consider the requirements for all nutrients--protein, energy, minerals and vitamins--in making the calculations. In practice, however, it usually is not necessary to be concerned with calculations of exact needs of all individual minerals and vitamins, since adequate amounts of trace minerals commonly are assured through inclusion of a trace mineralized salt in the ration. Other nutrients, such as the B vitamins, often are present in natural feedstuffs, …

Feeding Young And Growing Horses, Equine Section, Department Of Animal Sciences, University Of Kentucky

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

When you plan a feeding program for your young horses, several factors are very important:

  • body changes involved in growth,
  • nutrient requirements of that particular class of horse,
  • the feed’s nutrient content,
  • anatomical limitations of young horses’ digestive system, for instance, you cannot feed young horses low-energy, bulky feeds because their digestive tracts are not large enough. Instead, young horses need concentrated sources of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals to meet their nutritive needs.

Woody Plants Under Stress, Deborah B. Hill, William M. Fountain

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

When people see their woody plants (shrubs and trees) decline, they often want a "magical" treatment to make them lush, green and healthy again. But no magic exists. This publication should help you understand some common causes of woody plant stress, how stress leads to decline and what measures, if any, can make the tree healthy again. Remember, however, that all trees and shrubs like every living organism, will eventually die.
