Physiology Of Murine B Lymphocytes Ii. Life-Spans Of Mitogen And Thymus-Independent Antigen (Type 2) Reactive B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, S. Niranjan Goud, Richard J. Cross, Subbarao Bondada
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
We showed earlier that life spans of murine B lymphocytes could be estimated by measuring the functional reactivities of normal B cells upon transfer into x-linked immunodeficient (xid) mice, which do not respond to anti-mouse IgM (anti-μ) antibodies and thymic-independent type -2 (TI-2) antigens. Here the same approach was adopted, to evaluate the life spans of B-lymphocytes from aged mice. Spleen cells from normal young and aged mice were transferred into young or aged xid recipients and the decay kinetics were followed by measuring the proliferative response to anti-μ and PFC response to TNP-Ficoll, a prototype TI-2 antigen. The results …

Hordenine is an alkaloid occurring naturally in grains, sprouting barley, and certain grasses. It is occasionally found in post race urine samples, and therefore we investigated its pharmacological actions in the horse. Hordenine (2.0 mgkg bodyweight [bwt]) was administered by rapid intravenous (iv) injection to 10 horses. Typically, dosed horses showed a tlehmen response and defecated within 60 secs. All horses showed substantial respiratory distress. Respiratory rates increased about 250 per cent and heart rates were approximately double that of resting values. All animals broke out in a sweat shortly after iv injection, but basal body temperature was not affected. …

Metal Speciation And Immobilization Reactions Affecting The True Efficiency Of Artificial Wetlands To Treat Acid Mine Drainage, Anastasios D. Karathanasis, Y. L. Thompson
Metal Speciation And Immobilization Reactions Affecting The True Efficiency Of Artificial Wetlands To Treat Acid Mine Drainage, Anastasios D. Karathanasis, Y. L. Thompson
KWRRI Research Reports
The ability of constructed wetlands to lower total metal concentrations and organically complex metals in acid mine drainage (AMD) was investigated under greenhouse and field conditions. In the greenhouse study, Typha plants grown in six different substrates received simulated acid mine drainage of low metal load for five months. Most effluents, especially those from ground flows, showed significant decreases in acidity and metal concentrations. The pine needle and hay substrates most effectively reduced acidity and total Al levels. Effluents from these substrates contained 80% less total Al than respective influents. Organically complexed Al levels were independent of matrix and varied …

Primary Antibody Responses To Thymus-Independent Antigens In The Lungs And Hilar Lymph Nodes Of Mice, S. Niranjan Goud, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
B lymphocytes from the pulmonary lymphoid tissues were stimulated with a variety of thymus-independent (TI) antigens by intratracheal (i.t.) immunization. Immune responses in the lungs and hilar lymph nodes (HLN), which are part of the localized lymphoid tissue, as well as in the spleen, the systemic lymphoid organ, were studied. Thus, primary i.t. immunization of mice with the TI-1 antigen trinitrophenyl-lipopolysaccharide (TNP-LPS) elicited both antigen-specific and polyclonal plaque-forming cell responses from HLN, lung, and splenic B lymphocytes. These responses appeared as early as 3 days after immunization and declined by day 7. Similar immunization with another TI-1 antigen, TNP-Brucella …

Dietary treatments providing three levels of added Al (0, .196, or .392%) as aluminum sulfate and of available phosphorus (Pav) (.45, .68, or .78%) in a factorial arrangement were administered to day-old chicks in Experiment 1. Plasma inorganic phosphorus (Pi) was significantly (P < .05) elevated by increasing Pav and was decreased by Al. Body weight gain, feed intake, and the gain:feed ratio at Day 21 were significantly decreased by increased concentrations of Al, but were unaffected by the Pav concentrations. Decreases of 39 and 73% in weight gain and of 34 and 66% in feed intake resulted from feeding …

Met-enkephalin and related proenkephalin A-derived peptides circulate in plasma at picomolar concentration as free, native pentapeptide and at nanomolar concentration in cryptic forms. We have optimized conditions for measurement of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin in plasma and for generation by trypsin and carboxypeptidase B of much greater amounts of total peptidase-derivable Met-enkephalin in plasma of rats, dogs, and humans. Free Met-enkephalin (11 pM) is constituted by native pentapeptide and its sulfoxide. Characterization of plasma total Met-enkephalin derived by peptidic hydrolysis revealed a small amount (38 pM) of Met-enkephalin associated with peptides of molecular mass less than 30,000 D, and probably derived from …

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
High quality forages have been the "frontline" for successful horse and cattle operations for years. In Kentucky, we have grown, harvested and stored hay on the farm for as long as we have farmed. It is one of our principal forms of overwinter feed and has been grown primarily as an on-the-farm feed source.

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
The losses from harvest to feed bunk are undoubtedly greater with hay than any other crop grown by the American farmer. The economic implications of reducing losses through improved harvest technologies is staggering when one considers the 75-85 million tons of alfalfa harvested out of the total 140-145 million tons of hay produced annually in the United States.

Alfalfa Producers: Do You Really Know How Good Your Alfalfa Is? Forage Analysis: Importance And Interpretation, Jimmy C. Henning
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Forages make up over 75% of the diet of all cattle and are the basis of cow-calf industry in the midwest. However, a recent survey of over 1000 livestock producers in Missouri revealed that only 5.6 % had ever had their hay tested. They gave several reasons for why they had not tested hay (Table 1). By a large margin, the greatest reason for not testing was that they did not see a need. This fact highlights the purpose of this paper and presentation at the 10th Annual Kentucky Alfalfa Conference. This paper will explain the terms used in …

Developing Alfalfa Varieties For The 21st Century, Jim Moutray
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
As we approach the end of the 20th century, alfalfa improvement is happening at a very rapid pace, New varieties are being released at the rate of more than 30 per year. During the past 30 years, the roles of public and private research have changed significantly. Emphasis in public efforts has changed from variety development to basic research accompanied by an overall reduction in funding. Private industry, which released less than 20% of the new varieties prior to 1960, has released over 95% of the varieties since 1981. Funding of private research has increased dramatically during this period.

Right To Farm, J. L. Taraba, R. M. Williams
Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
Landowners in general have the right to use their property in any manner they might find useful or enjoyable except when that use infringes on the right of their neighbor or community to use their property. Conflicting interests of neighbors have been the subject of numerous disagreements resulting in one or the other loosing his right to use his property as he wishes. The circumstances surrounding each conflict usually determines the outcome, and farmers should be aware that their right to farm may be at the mercy of courts who have sometimes been sympathetic to grievances of their more urban …
