Can We Graze Year-Around In The Heart Of America, Edward N. Ballard
Can We Graze Year-Around In The Heart Of America, Edward N. Ballard
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Feed costs represent the major cost in most livestock production systems. A recently completed analysis of 225 Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) Beef Cow Records on herds in Illinois and Iowa showed that feed cost was the overriding factor determining profitability, explaining over 57 percent of the herd-to-herd variation. Typically the cost of supplying nutrients to ruminant livestock is much greater using harvested feedstuffs as opposed to grazing pastures or crop residues. The primary function of a grassland farm is to convert solar energy to marketable livestock products in the most efficient manner. The fewer steps between the animal product and …

Methods To Identify Plant Metabolites, Deane L. Falcone, John M. Littleton
Methods To Identify Plant Metabolites, Deane L. Falcone, John M. Littleton
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Patents
This invention provides materials and methods to manipulate the plant genome at the level of single plant cells in culture resulting in the ability to assign metabolic functionality to plant genes involved in the production of biologically active molecules and to create a means of product discovery based on the biosynthetic capacity of plants. The materials to create an activation mutagenesis include incorporation of enhancer sequences from a plant viral promoter at random places in the plant genome via Agrobacterium mediated DNA transfer (T-DNA). The usefulness is that genes in the immediate vicinity of the incorporation were activated which allows …
Forage Systems For Minimizing Hay And Concentrate Feed Needs, Glen E. Aiken
Forage Systems For Minimizing Hay And Concentrate Feed Needs, Glen E. Aiken
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Cattlemen typically simplify their pasture management by relying on one or two forages that are well adapted and persist under their targeted levels of management and production. The 5.5 million acres of Kentucky-31 tall fescue in Kentucky is a strong indication how producers in the state rely on the cool-season perennial grass, sometimes in mixture with red or white clover, to meet their grazing needs. An advantage of this approach is that fertilization and grazing management is based on a single growth distribution and set of fertilizer needs. Disadvantages are that yield, growth distribution, and quality of forage may not …
How Good Is Your Hay?, Tom Keene
How Good Is Your Hay?, Tom Keene
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
All hay that is made or produced should have a value placed on it. Because no matter what livestock enterprise that it is earmarked for, there were significant inputs that went into producing that hay. Therefore, it is imperative that we place a value on the hay product(s) that we have produced.
New Developments In Pasture Weed Control, William W. Witt
New Developments In Pasture Weed Control, William W. Witt
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Weeds in pastures continue to offer challenges to the producer for controlling these unwanted plants. The combination of forage grasses grown in pastures and the climate of Kentucky provides an environment that is conducive for having numerous weedy species. Most pastures have a combination of cool season (those that begin growth in fall and mature in spring or early summer) and warm season (those that begin growth in spring and mature in late summer or fall) weeds. Additionally, some weeds such as thistles severely restrict grazing while other weeds do not. The decision to apply a weed management strategy is …

Roundup Ready® Alfalfa, Novel Endophyte Tall Fescue, Red And White Clover, Bermudagrass, And More, S. Ray Smith
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Finally, Roundup Ready® alfalfa is now available and currently varieties show excellent tolerance to Roundup, good disease res i stance, and good yield potential. Before making plans to plant 100 acres know that the price in most states is over $7.00 per pound and pre-ordering seed is essential if you want to plant the spring of 2006. Roundup tolerance is a very useful trait in alfalfa, but remember that Roundup Ready ® varieties are not superior for other traits. Some current advertisement s promote Roundup Ready® varieties as higher yielding and higher quality. These statements are not untrue, but they …
Using Legumes To Renew Grass Pastures, Garry D. Lacefield
Using Legumes To Renew Grass Pastures, Garry D. Lacefield
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Legume content in Kentucky pastures has been reduced dramatically as a result of the drought and high temperatures of 2005 and very muddy conditions this past winter. In addition, late-winter early-spring seedings during 2004 were not as successful as normal due to excessive moisture during the establishment periods. As a result of our reduced amount of legumes in pasture and the many advantages legumes have for improving Kentucky pastures, serious considerations should be given to renovating pastures in 2006.

Market Power And Competitive Analysis Of China's Soybean Import Market, Baohui Song
Market Power And Competitive Analysis Of China's Soybean Import Market, Baohui Song
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Globally, China is the number one soybean importer, and the United States, Brazil, and Argentina are the top three soybean exporters. This research, based on the reverse residual demand model, developed and estimated a two-country partial equilibrium trade model to test who has stronger market power in the Chinese soybean import market. This two-country partial equilibrium trade model incorporates the U.S. residual soybean supply for China, the Chinese residual demand for U.S. soybeans, and the equilibrium condition, where the U.S. residual soybean supply equals the Chinese residual soybean demand. Data used in this research are monthly data from January 1999 …

Language Ideology And Racial Inequality: Competing Functions Of Spanish In An Anglo-Owned Mexican Restaurant, Rusty Barrett
Language Ideology And Racial Inequality: Competing Functions Of Spanish In An Anglo-Owned Mexican Restaurant, Rusty Barrett
Linguistics Faculty Publications
This article examines the influence of language ideology on interactions between English-speaking Anglo and monolingual Spanish-speaking employees in an Anglo-owned Mexican restaurant in Texas. In directives to Spanish-speaking employees, Anglo managers typically use English with elements of Mock Spanish. Because the Anglo managers fail to question whether their limited use of Spanish is sufficient for communicative success, Spanish speakers are almost always held responsible for incidents resulting from miscommunication. For Latino workers, Spanish provides an alternative linguistic market in which Spanish operates as a form of solidarity and resistance. The competing functions of Spanish serve to reinforce racial segregation and …

Assessment Of Water Quality Trends In The Upper Cumberland River Basin: Focus On Pathogen Impairment, Kentucky Water Resources Institute
KWRRI Research Reports
This project consisted of analyzing existing water quality data for streams in the Upper Cumberland River Basin, with a particular focus on pathogen trends. According to the most recent 303(d) list of Kentucky waters, the majority of streams assessed in the Upper Cumberland Basin are impaired for primary recreational contact as a result of pathogens. The state pathogen standard for primary contact recreation is expressed in a dual form which specifies that the 30-day geometric mean of fecal coliform counts not exceed 200 colonies per 100 mL (on a minimum of five samples) and not more than 20 percent of …

Automatic Detection Of Sleep And Wake States In Mice Using Piezoelectric Sensors, Dharshan C. Medonza
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Currently technologies such as EEG, EMG and EOG recordings are the established methods used in the analysis of sleep. But if these methods are to be employed to study sleep in rodents, extensive surgery and recovery is involved which can be both time consuming and costly. This thesis presents and analyzes a cost effective, non-invasive, high throughput system for detecting the sleep and wake patterns in mice using a piezoelectric sensor. This sensor was placed at the bottom of the mice cages to monitor the movements of the mice. The thesis work included the development of the instrumentation and signal …

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Clay County, Kentucky, Oscar B. Davidson, Daniel I. Carey, John Storm
Map and Chart--KGS
This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Air Exchange Rate In A Horse Trailer During Road Transport, Joseph L. Purswell, Richard S. Gates, Laurie M. Lawrence, Jamey D. Jacob, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Robert J. Coleman
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Horses traveling by road commonly experience heat stress conditions and poor air quality, which may be caused by insufficient ventilation; however, there are few estimates of air exchange in a horse trailer during transport. Air exchange rate was measured at ten locations within a four-horse trailer (internal volume 18.5 m3) using tracer gas decay measurement to assess the adequacy of ventilation. Three vehicle speeds (13, 48, and 97 km h-1) and three window configurations (all windows and roof vents closed, all windows open, all windows open and roof vents open forward) were tested with and without …
Molecular Mechanisms That Mediate Metastasis Suppressor Activity Of Nm23-H1, Qingbei Zhang
Molecular Mechanisms That Mediate Metastasis Suppressor Activity Of Nm23-H1, Qingbei Zhang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the primary tumor to distant sites. It is the most dangerous attribute of cancer, and also the principle cause of cancerrelated morbidity and mortality. Metastasis suppressor genes are a group of genes that suppress tumor metastasis without significant effect on tumorigenicity. NM23 was the first identified metastasis suppressor gene, and loss of its expression is a frequent hallmark of metastatic growth in multiple cancers (e.g. melanoma, carcinomas of breast, stomach and liver). NM23-H1 possesses at least three enzymatic activities, including nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK), histidine kinase (hisK), and a more recently described …
Epoxygenase Expression In Soybean And Biological Effects Of Epoxy Fatty Acids, Purnima Kamlakar Wagh
Epoxygenase Expression In Soybean And Biological Effects Of Epoxy Fatty Acids, Purnima Kamlakar Wagh
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Epoxy fatty acids (EXA) are valuable to industry as they are used in synthesizing plasticizers such as of poly vinyl chloride, resins, adhesives, coating materials such as paint, lubricant, lubricant additives, insecticides, insect repellants, crop oil concentrates and formulations of carriers for slow release pesticides and herbicides. There is interest in developing commercial oilseeds accumulating epoxy fatty acids to at least 50% of the seed oil. Soybeans are the most widely cultivated oilseed and its oil has high levels of linoleic acid which can be a substrate for epoxygenase enzymes. Cahoon et al., expressed a cytochrome P450 enzyme (CYP726A1) from …
The Development Of Colletotrichum Graminicola Inside Maize Stalk Tissues, Claire Marie-Pierre Venard
The Development Of Colletotrichum Graminicola Inside Maize Stalk Tissues, Claire Marie-Pierre Venard
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Colleotrichum graminicola is the causal agent of anthracnose stalk rot, and is one of the most common and aggressive pathogens of maize. The goal of my Ph.D. project was to contribute to a better understanding of the biology of the interaction between C. graminicola and its host. C. graminicola produces two type of asexual spores: one is produced on the surface of infected tissues and is thought to be involved in the spread of the disease in the field. The second type of spore, oval in shape, is produced inside the infected plant tissues, and was believed to be involved …

The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the Dunbar Neighborhood Association’s ability of reducing crime for its residents. In November of 2002, a resident of Dunbar Neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky established the Dunbar Neighborhood Association (DNA) to counter the perceived growing amount of criminal activity in her community. The DNA held monthly meetings and relayed information about perceived and known criminal activity to the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Police Department. The police in turn promised to provide a beat officer who could be contacted by the DNA Chairwoman when she became aware of potential future crimes. The following study …
Financial Efficiency In The Nonprofit Sector: An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Expense Ratios Of Kentucky Nonprofits, Emily A. Lane
Financial Efficiency In The Nonprofit Sector: An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Expense Ratios Of Kentucky Nonprofits, Emily A. Lane
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Statement of Problem
Recent events in both the public and private sectors have lead to an environment of mistrust and caution surrounding the way organizations are managed and funds are handled. For the nonprofit sector, this has led to an emergence of charity rating or watchdog organizations and increased scrutiny of finances. Individual donors, charity rating agencies, and funding institutions have begun using expense ratios as a measure of financial efficiency. Decisions on the financial efficiency of organizations are being made without a good understanding of what factors affect these ratios.

Age-Related Alterations In The Dynamics Of L-Glutamate Regulation In The Striatum Of The Fischer 344 Rat, Justin Robert Nickell
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
L-glutamate is the predominant excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter inthe mammalian central nervous system. Prior aging studies have focusedprimarily on dopaminergic circuitry of the striatum, and data obtained studyingglutamate regulation in the striatum have been largely equivocal. Thesediscrepancies are due in large part to the limitations of microdialysis; while it isextremely sensitive to minute concentrations of analyte, it is lacking in terms ofthe temporal resolution necessary to study a neurotransmitter with rapid releaseand clearance kinetics such as glutamate. In order to address this matter, ourlaboratory has designed a ceramic-based multisite microelectrode with thecapability to detect and analyze fluctuations in extracellular glutamateconcentrations …

Kentucky plays a vital role in the beef supply chain. The cow/calf producers,back-grounding operations, and order buying industry are important parts of Kentucky'sagricultural economy. Basis risk is an issue that affects these groups in a negative way. Agood estimate of the expected basis must be available to make hedging efficient.Simulations were performed on Kentucky price data to determine the effectiveness ofshort hedging for Kentucky producers. A model was also used to describe some of thefactors that determine basis levels. The research revealed that it is difficult to predictbasis within an acceptable range to make short hedging with futures efficient. Eventhough …
Dynamics Of Action Potential Duration: Effects On Restitution And Repolarization Alternans, Runze Wu
Dynamics Of Action Potential Duration: Effects On Restitution And Repolarization Alternans, Runze Wu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The presented studies investigate dynamics of action potential duration (APD) tobetter understand the underlying mechanism for repolarization alternans. We recorded trans-membrane potentials (TMP) in canine endocardial muscle tissueusing standard glass microelectrode under the control of an explicit diastolic interval (DI)control pacing protocol, i.e. feedback protocol. During sequential sinusoidal DI activation, the trajectory of APD dynamics has multiple values of APD correspondent to the sameDI, i.e. restitution is a bi-modal relationship. Our results indicate that: 1) there is a delay, similar to hysteresis, of change in APD responding to change in DI, 2) and the timecourse of the delay is asymmetric for fast or …
