How Erma Saved Me, Renee Schafer Horton Apr 2018

How Erma Saved Me, Renee Schafer Horton

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Thirty-four years ago, I was a first-time mother barely surviving my liberated effort to "do it all." I moved frantically from long days as a newspaper reporter into long nights of a colicky baby, trying to prove myself perfect in both arenas. I wanted to quit the job, but I was fighting the voices of all my journalist friends who said if I quit my job I would NEVER. BE. HIRED. AGAIN. At least not as a reporter. And certainly not as columnist, which had always been my dream.

Cook's Day Off, Gayle M. Rodd

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Do you feel inspired when you watch cooking shows? Boy, they make it look so easy don't they? All of the processes that turn an ordinary meal into something spectacular are really dependent on who stirs, minces and sautés them. I wanted to see if I could make some truly remarkable meals using all the information and tricks I'd gathered while watching midday cooking, so I sat down and wrote out a menu that would not only embrace the four food groups, but would put the gathering of family and friends back into my dining room. I began with something …

The 60-Year-Old Virgin, Laurie O'Connor Stephans

No one would mistake me for a virgin. Even if you didn't know about my husband and three children, there's my obvious postpartum physique, which I have not only maintained, but enlarged upon, for over 30 years. And yet, I am a virgin. In fact, this week a bunch of us virgins will gather in Dayton, Ohio, for our first Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop.

President's Blog: From the Heart

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, I’m struck by two undeniable facts. We are a nation in which far too many of us are still facing injustice. This is a time of reflection and action, not celebration.

Teaching For Deep Learning In A Second Grade Literacy Classroom, Treavor Bogard, Annamary L. Consalvo, Jo Worthy Apr 2018

Teaching For Deep Learning In A Second Grade Literacy Classroom, Treavor Bogard, Annamary L. Consalvo, Jo Worthy

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

From a New Literacies Studies (NLS) perspective, deep learning involves the acquisition of social and cultural competencies valued within a disciplinary community, not merely propositional displays of what one knows. Drawn from a year-long qualitative inquiry, this case study examines how one exemplary second-grade literacy teacher taught toward deep learning, using a pedagogy of multiliteracies (New London Group, 1996). Selected episodes of instruction were analyzed in two phases. Initially, data were examined for evidence of three main competency sets of deep learning--cognitive, inter-personal, and intra-personal (National Research Council, 2012). In the latter phase, analysis focused on the teacher’s pedagogical stances …

Farm To Liberation: Towards Feminist Food Justice, Elisabeth Spector Apr 2018

Farm To Liberation: Towards Feminist Food Justice, Elisabeth Spector

Honors Theses

Women are one of the many vulnerable populations experiencing the detrimental effects of human-induced climate change, and our current system of food production is one of the largest contributors to this global problem. Not only do modern methods of food production contribute significantly to climate change, but they devalue women’s knowledge and strip away their opportunities. A number of communities and individuals have begun to work against this system and work towards food justice through small-scale farming and growing their own food. Through the use of ecofeminist scholarship and original interviews, this project examines the problems within our current food …

Risk Consumption, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Rick Stover Apr 2018

Risk Consumption, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Rick Stover

Accounting Faculty Publications

Understanding the difference between risk appetite and risk tolerance can deter organizations from digesting too much risk.

The concepts of risk appetite and risk tolerance were introduced in 2004 in The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission’s (COSO’s) Enterprise Risk Management–Integrated Framework. Specifically, COSO defines risk appetite as “the amount of risk — on a broad level — that an entity is willing to accept in pursuit of value.” Naturally, organizations will have different risk appetites depending on their industry, management philosophy, operating style, culture, and objectives. Therefore, a range of appetites potentially exist for distinct risks, which …
