If you were to call me on my old iPhone to ask when telephone technology reached its peak, I would have told you it was the day Alexander Graham Bell invented it and that the entire industry has been going downhill ever since, except you wouldn't hear me because the reception would be so bad that it would seem like the nearest cellphone tower was on Pluto, which would give Disney an excuse to charge me for phone service.

Sitting in the driver's seat I could see this country road was either going to be the road of success or the most epic failure of 1979. The determination I felt wrapping my adolescent fingers around the stick shift for the first time had quickly dissipated. I was 16 years old with one foot on the gas, the other on the clutch and showing enough spark in my attitude to be dangerous.

Spring Break, Or Bust, Jase Graves
Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog
As an educator, I feel blessed that I usually have the same spring break as my three daughters, which means we get to spend a week of quality time off together while my wife continues to go to work to support our leisure activities. This year, while scanning Facebook to witness our friends and loved ones on exciting ski trips, vacations to Europe, and jaunts to the beach, we spent the first part of our break in a thrilling competition to see who could sleep the latest and wear the same pair of sweatpants for the most consecutive days. Unfortunately, …

As I embark into my sixth decade, I am realizing that there are certain things I really need. I prided myself for many years in being able to thread a sewing machine needle without my Dollar Tree cheaters. Evidently from the text I sent my daughter last night - "I unlicked doir" - I need my glasses all the time for reading, writing and arithmetic (especially since I'm in accounting). Last week, a friend of the family sent up a distress Facebook post needing prayer for the final weeks of her MA program. It was late, but I wanted to …

The Bombeck Family Learning Center, which underwent a major expansion in 2000 after receiving a $1 million gift from Bombeck, also received $230,000.
