To reduce the increasingly congestion in cities, it is essential for intelligent transportation system (ITS) to accurately forecast the short-term traffic flow to identify the potential congestion sites. In recent years, the emerging deep learning method has been introduced to design traffic flow predictors, such as recurrent neural network (RNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), which has demonstrated its promising results. In this paper, different from existing work, we study the temporal convolutional network (TCN) and propose a deep learning framework based on TCN model for short-term city-wide traffic forecast to accurately capture the temporal and spatial evolution of traffic …

In this paper, we focus on the collection and analysis of relevant Twitter data on a state-by-state basis for (i) measuring public opinion on marijuana legalization by mining sentiment in Twitter data and (ii) determining the usage trends for six distinct types of marijuana. We overcome the challenges posed by the informal and ungrammatical nature of tweets to analyze a corpus of 306,835 relevant tweets collected over the four-month period, preceding the November 2015 Ohio Marijuana Legalization ballot and the four months after the election for all states in the US. Our analysis revealed two key insights: (i) the people …

We present an approach to construct reachable set overapproxi- mations for continuous-time dynamical systems controlled using neural network feedback systems. Feedforward deep neural net- works are now widely used as a means for learning control laws through techniques such as reinforcement learning and data-driven predictive control. However, the learning algorithms for these net- works do not guarantee correctness properties on the resulting closed-loop systems. Our approach seeks to construct overapproxi- mate reachable sets by integrating a Taylor model-based flowpipe construction scheme for continuous differential equations with an approach that replaces the neural network feedback law for a small subset of …

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems At Resonance For Caputo Fractional Differential Equations, Saleh S. Almuthaybiri, Paul W. Eloe, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The quasilinearization method is applied to a boundary value problem at resonance for a Caputo fractional differential equation. The method of upper and lower solutions is first employed to obtain the uniqueness of solutions of the boundary value problem at resonance. The shift argument is applied to show the existence of solutions. The quasilinearization algorithm is then developed and sequences of approximate solutions are constructed that converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem at resonance. Two applications are provided to illustrate the main results.

As archivists, we often view ourselves as stewards of the collections, preserving materials for other researchers to use. We arrange, describe, and promote the items, but it’s not always within our job descriptions to interpret the materials we work with or to create new knowledge. Yet data visualization, or any effort that helps users see data in a visual way, can be an easy and accessible way to promote collections. This article highlights data visualization tools archivists have begun to use to enhance their digital holdings. Each tool requires a different level of technical expertise, but many are user-friendly and …

Marian Library Faculty Publications
What is technology? Although the definition changes depending on context, editor Melissa Morrone starts off her collection of oral history interviews, Human Operators: A Critical Oral History on Technology in Libraries and Archives, by posing that question. In a unique style, Morrone compiles, edits, and connects interviews from 42 different librarians and archivists into one book that reads like a conversational narrative. Many interesting topics are covered throughout, but the book mainly provides responses from librarians and archivists about how we, as humans, use and ultimately feel about technology in different environments.

We apply the quasilinearization method to a Dirichlet boundary value problem and to a right focal boundary value problem for a RiemannLiouville fractional differential equation. First, we sue the method of upper and lower solutions to obtain the uniqueness of solutions of the Dirichlet boundary value problem. Next, we apply a suitable fixed point theorem to establish the existence of solutions. We develop a quasilinearization algorithm and construct sequences of approximate solutions that converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem. Two examples are exhibited to illustrate the main result for the Dirichlet boundary value …

The Large Contraction Principle And Existence Of Periodic Solutions For Infinite Delay Volterra Difference Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda, Youssef Raffoul
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In this article, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of a nonlinear infinite delay Volterra difference equation. (See paper for equation.)
We employ a Krasnosel’skii type fixed point theorem, originally proved by Burton. The primary sufficient condition is not verifiable in terms of the parameters of the difference equation, and so we provide three applications in which the primary sufficient condition is verified.

Abstract. We apply a recent Avery et al. fixed point theorem to the Hammerstein integral equation (see paper for equation). Under certain conditions on G, we show the existence of positive and positive symmetric solutions. Examples are given where G is a convolution kernel and where G is a Green’s function associated with different boundary-value problem.

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies
On January 21, 2017, masses of people around the globe gathered for one of the largest collections of public protest in history. It is estimated that over seven million people gathered to raise awareness of human rights violations towards several different groups. However, perhaps the largest common trope was echoed time and time again in the phrase, "women's rights are human rights." Conversations surrounding women's rights have been pushed to the forefront of human rights discourse in the recent past, and although there has certainly been a lot of progress towards the universal enforcement of women's rights, the role of …

In the wake of the November 2010 elections, one important signal of the Myanmar government’s commitment to change was the cessation of the censorship of music recordings in October 2012.
1 Prior to that date, the country’s Press Scrutiny Board conducted rather rigorous censoring of so-called stereo series (albums), in cassette and later in compact disc formats. Producers wishing to sell their series in retail shops were required to submit a copy of the recording and ten copies of the song lyrics to the censors at the Press Security Board (MacLachlan 2011:148). Although the censoring was supposed to be provided …

Hell As ‘Heterotopia’: Edification And Interpretation From Enoch To The Apocalypses Of Peter And Paul, Meghan Henning

Otherworldly journeys are a challenging object of study for the contemporary historian because they do not seem to resonate with the post-enlightenment worldview that bolsters scientific academic inquiry. And yet, even if we do not imagine heaven and hell in the same way that ancient thinkers did, the impulse to create “otherworlds” is still very much alive. With every new technology humans open the possibility of new spaces with complex relationships to the spaces that already exist. Here, before we think about the reception of 1 Enoch in the apocalypses, I would like to take a moment to propose a …

Errors introduced into data acquired for nondestructive evaluation due to suboptimal digitization rates, bandwidth, and signal processing settings can dominate the perceived noise in acquired data, leading to artifacts and erroneous interpretation. Furthermore, the presence of such errors incurred through the data acquisition process can also inhibit post-processing techniques utilized in multimodal data segmentation and registration efforts. This study illustrates the use of advanced signal processing techniques to limit the effects of quantization errors in normal-incidence ultrasonic inspection data, thereby optimizing the signals for further processing while maintaining the integrity of the data. In conjunction with signal processing methods, K-means …

Quantitative characterization of impact damage in polymer matrix composites (PMCs) with ultrasonic inspection is desired to enable improved prediction of damage evolution for lifmg of composite structures. Post-processing of single-sided pulse-echo Ultrasonic Testing (UT) data produces 2D C-scan images that indicate the presence and 2D extent of delaminations, with very high depth resolution of the first reflector, while further damage below the first reflector is hidden. X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) characterizes internal damage with a 3D voxel-based representation. Delaminations, matrix cracks, and surface-breaking cracks can be clearly visible in some XCT reconstructions. Modern damage evolution models take as input full …
