The present study examined how the Growth Motivation Index (GMI; J. J. Bauer et al., 2015) related to well-being and identity exploration in samples from the U.S., Japan, Guatemala, and India. The GMI has two facets. GMI-reflective measures the motive to cultivate critical self-reflection and intellectual development, whereas GMI-experiential measures the motive to cultivate personally meaningful activities and relationships. We expected and found that, when comparing the two GMI facets simultaneously, GMI-reflective predicted well-being in countries ranked as having collectivist but not individualist cultures, whereas GMI-experiential predicted well-being in countries ranked as having individualist but not collectivist cultures. GMI-reflective predicted …

The mechanism of resistance in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has therapeutic implications. We comprehensively characterized emerging mechanisms of resistance in CRE between 2013 and 2016 at a health system in Northern California. A total of 38.7% (24/62) of CRE isolates were carbapenemase gene-positive, comprising 25.0% (6/24) blaOXA-48 like, 20.8% (5/24) blaKPC, 20.8% (5/24) blaNDM, 20.8% (5/24) blaSME, 8.3% (2/24) blaIMP, and 4.2% (1/24) blaVIM. Between carbapenemases and porin loss, the resistance mechanism was identified in 95.2% (59/62) of CRE isolates. Isolates expressing blaKPC were 100% susceptible to ceftazidime–avibactam, meropenem–vaborbactam, …

Erma Bombeck – 25-Year Overnight Success!, Susan Marie Frontczak

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Modern culture applauds the "overnight success." One of the most oft-quoted factoids about Erma Bombeck is her "instant" rise to fame and fortune. Less than a month after her column At Wit's End first appeared in the Journal Herald in Dayton in 1965, it was syndicated by Newsday. The column was carried by 38 papers by the end of the year and 500 papers by the end of the decade. This narrative gives the impression that all of a sudden one day, Erma - fed up with ironing sheets, removing yellow wax buildup from her kitchen floor, and packing fluffernutter …

Dogs are stupider than we thought, although probably they'd argue the point if they had a clue. OK, maybe not stupider. Maybe even smart, but certainly not exceptional, according to a new study of the intellectual abilities of dogs by psychology professors Stephen Lea and Britta Osthaus of the University of Buzzkill Big, Fat Weenies.

Bob And The Great Pigeon War, Deborah Weir

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Bob wasn't the only one with a real gun in our neighborhood; our next-door neighbor had one as well. Jim Driscoll worked on his black 1932 Packard sedan whenever he wasn't on the assembly line at the Ford plant. He loved that car more than his anything, and he kept it shined to a high-gloss finish. His garage was filled with tools for this hobby, so the car usually sat in the driveway. Bob and I didn't know that Mr. Driscoll owned a shotgun until the Great Pigeon War.

Should I Confess Or Brag?, Jan Marshall

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I'm an environmentalist. Had not washed my car in months. People write "Dirty Girl" on the dust, which actually pleased me. Then, I used a tad of H20 to wipe the soot. Therefore, whether you blame or praise me, I obviously caused not only the rain but with it yes, the ants are back in my powder room.
