Erma Bombeck Writing Competition: Human Interest Local First Place - John Bradley, The Greatest Turkey Who Ever Lived, Gwen Rosenberg

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

It was autumn and we were living on four acres with three babies, a dozen chickens, two goats, and a dog. My friends had advanced degrees and enjoyed ladies lunches at farm-to-table restaurants, and I was doing laundry, changing diapers and eating frozen turkey for Thanksgiving. We had a fresh, free-range turkey living in the barn, but when our eyes met moments before I was supposed to swing the axe, I decided our meal could be from someone else's farm to our table.

I almost scrapped the idea of joining AquaRobics because it meant buying a swimsuit. Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

My husband and I had been dating a few months when, left unsupervised in my apartment, he replaced my showerhead with one he claimed provided superior water pressure. That should have been a warning sign. Unable to repair items that don't work, my husband replaces those that do. he "upgraded" our blinds to automatic ones whose schedule is classified.

As I emptied cabinet after cabinet, preparing for our dining room remodel, I was overcome by the frivolity with which we seem to spend our money. Margarita sets - unopened. Salad bowls - unused. Corn on the cob gadgets - untouched. But one particular item really caught my attention and subsequently, prompted me to bring it to my husband's attention.

My Night At The Met With The Iron Duke, Kaye Curren

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

My husband, John, was a good ole boy. A cowboy. He called himself the Iron Duke. John had to leave his horses and his barn in upstate New York to peddle steel in the five boroughs. It was the '70s and gangs still ruled the city. New York in those days could reduce a horse wrangler to a blubbering baby. John would pound the steering wheel and cry when he lost his way on the one-way streets in Brooklyn. And cowboys don't cry.

After two years of research, and thanks to a sabbatical, University of Dayton researchers Andy Chong and Qiwen Zhan became the first to create a new “state of light” — showing it also can rotate around a transverse axis perpendicular to the direction light travels, like a cyclone
