A button came off one of my favorite shirts. I thought I could wear it and nobody would notice, but no, the button missing was right by my boob. I couldn't wear it for obvious reasons.

Writing has always been a passion of mine. Whether it's just writing down my thoughts or creatively jotting down multiple phrases to create a made-up story with fictional characters that somehow seem real. Receiving the scholarship to attend the Emma Bombeck Workshop is an opportunity that I am not taking for granted. Getting the opportunity to sit in a room filled with writers of all genres that will get me fired up for my future career in writing is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

For years, people have said I am all wet, even during droughts, so I wasn't surprised that until recently, my house was all wet, too. That's because there was water, water everywhere and, since I ran out of beer, not a drop to drink.

What are the reasons German Immigrants were able to dominate in the brewing industries? What had caused there to be so many German Immigrants in the Dayton area?
Conclusions:
- Dayton Breweries started to take off with Germans:
- Germans had the economy booming with their lager.
- Families were able to hold their own and provide for their families.
- Discrimination occurred during World War I, World War II, and the Prohibition, which had caused most of the breweries to shut down.
- Breweries starting to make a huge comeback in Dayton.

School-Based Support For Families Of Students With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Susan C. Davies
School-Based Support For Families Of Students With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Susan C. Davies
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
Families of children with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often experience emotional burden related to the sudden onset, intensity, and duration of the recovery process. Family support can improve outcomes; however, parents and siblings of students with TBI often do not receive the help they need, which can impede the injured child’s recovery. This qualitative study involved focus groups with school psychologists who have worked with students with TBIs. Participants were asked about challenges experienced by families of students with TBI and how school psychologists could better support families of children with TBI. Themes included: guilt, change, lack of time and …

Stochastic simulation approaches and uncertainty quantification are usually adopted for gaining insight into variability in soil stratigraphy configurations. Previous investigations at geotechnical site characterization and interpretation can be broadly categorized into geostatistics- and process-based methods. On the other hand, modern site exploration techniques provide high-quality, dense datasets in physical spaces with high resolution, either directly from sensors (for example, cone penetration testing data) or indirectly from geophysical inversion (such as seismic inversion, electromagnetic induction inversion, and ground penetrating radar). In this work, anisotropy and heterogeneity are considered as possible patterns that inherently exist in the observations, and these are inferred …

Alzheimer's disease (AD, OMIM: 104300) is an age-related disorder that affects millions of people. One of the underlying causes of AD is generation of hydrophobic amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) peptides that accumulate to form amyloid plaques. These plaques induce oxidative stress and aberrant signaling, which result in the death of neurons and other pathologies linked to neurodegeneration. We have developed a Drosophila eye model of AD by targeted misexpression of human Aβ42 in the differentiating retinal neurons, where an accumulation of Aβ42 triggers a characteristic neurodegenerative phenotype. In a forward deficiency screen to look for genetic modifiers, we identified a molecularly …
Cameroon’S Relations Toward Nigeria: A Foreign Policy Of Pragmatism, Julius A. Amin
Cameroon’S Relations Toward Nigeria: A Foreign Policy Of Pragmatism, Julius A. Amin
History Faculty Publications
Existing literature argues that the tactics of Cameroon foreign policy have been conservative, weak and timid. This study refutes that perspective. Based on extensive and previously unused primary sources obtained from Cameroon’s Ministry of External Relations and from the nation’s archives in Buea and Yaoundé, this study argues that Cameroon’s foreign policy was neither timid nor makeshift. Its strategy was one of pragmatism. By examining the nation’s policy toward Nigeria in the reunification of Cameroon, the Nigerian civil war, the Bakassi Peninsula crisis and Boko Haram, the study maintains that, while the nation’s policy was cautious, its leaders focused on …

Purpose: Survivors of breast cancer (BC) on the non-dominant side have more persistent deficits than those with cancer on the dominant limb. What is not known is whether those with BC use their involved upper limbs more, less, or at the same level as women without BC. Accelerometer use offers a quantifiable method to measure activity levels of upper limbs. The purpose of this study was to quantify the activity levels of the non-dominant involved limb among survivors of BC and compare these values to their dominant limb, as well as the non-dominant limb of a control group.
Methods: Participants …

Listen. The dead are talkative tonight. My wife and I are taking shelter from a spring storm, relaxing on our hotel balcony, when the conversation, via wind chimes, begins. You see, in the Apache tradition, wind chimes are voices of your ancestors whispering their wisdom. At least that's what my mom said each time she hung chimes in our yard.

My sister and I are in the funeral home, sitting across from the mortician and our shoulders are shaking. Our eyes well up with tears. Our stomach muscles are aching, we can't see, we can't breathe. We can't speak. At first the mortician has his funeral parlor game face on. Then a look of discomfort and concern seeps in. Finally the dam breaks and, despite his professional demeanor, he just can't help himself. He starts to laugh, too.

The last inches of cigar clung to the corner of my father-in-law's mouth as he gnawed on our predicament. A newly delivered refrigerator obstinately filled the center floor of our u-shaped kitchen. He stretched a tape measure across the appliance, then stepped into the intended alcove measuring in several places. "Nope. Doesn't fit."

I limped into the doctor's office, grimacing with every other step. My strong right foot was ready to dance half of a festive polka, but the left foot hurt as if I were walking in a box of rocks over the smoldering ashes of my broken dreams. I explained to the doctor how the agony in my heel was worse in the morning, and I wanted to stay in bed, read books, and hire a mysterious Italian hunk named Antonio to bring me brunch and sing ballads.

Most people would never find anything funny about their Mother's death. Most people are normal. But if you'd known my Mom and her Irish sense of humor, you'd swear she planned this. Mom slipped into a diabetic coma while I was fifteen hours away, camping in the mountains with my young daughters.
