Dominica: Various Applications, Paige E. Lazar

ETHOS Technical Reports

A civil engineering student from the University of Dayton traveled to Roseau, Dominica during the summer of 2016. The student spent ten weeks on the island, and collaborated between three organizations: Carib Sand and Stone, a government funded tropical storm relief housing project, and McKenzie Architectural and Construction (MAC) Services Inc. A preliminary concrete anchor system was designed for Carib Sand and Stone. Unfortunately, funding was not available for the proposed anchor project to proceed past the preliminary design. The role of project manager was observed for both the government-funded housing project and MAC Services. To avoid redundancy, construction observed …

Possible Recent Warming Hiatus On The Northwestern Tibetan Plateau Derived From Ice Core Records, Wenling An, Shugui Hou, Wangbin Zhang, Shuang-Ye Wu, Hao Xu, Hongxi Pang, Yetang Wang, Yaping Liu

Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Many studies have reported enhanced warming trend on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), even during the warming hiatus period. However, most of these studies are based on instrumental data largely collected from the eastern TP, whereas the temperature trend over the extensive northwestern TP remains uncertain due to few meteorological stations. Here we combined the stable isotopic δ18O record of an ice core recovered in 2012 from the Chongce glacier with the δ18O records of two other ice cores (i.e., Muztagata and Zangser Kangri) in the same region to establish a regional temperature series for the northwestern …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The lubricant systems used in turbine engine applications are discussed with respect to the particular problems associated with aircraft applications. After initially describing the relevant specifications, the typical basestocks are described along with some common degradation schemes. The additive systems, including antioxidants, anti-foaming agents, and anti-wear additives needed to achieve the typical specifications, are described along with their mechanism of action and degradation mechanisms. The methods used for the monitoring of lubricant health, including in-line and offline methods, are also discussed. A Model For Understanding Positive Intergroup Relations Using The In-Group-Favoring Norm, R. Matthew Montoya, Brad Pinter Sep 2016

A Model For Understanding Positive Intergroup Relations Using The In-Group-Favoring Norm, R. Matthew Montoya, Brad Pinter

Psychology Faculty Publications

We present a model of intergroup relations focused on the role of the in-group-favoring norm as capable of facilitating positive intergroup relations. We begin by defining the in-group-favoring norm and describing how it affects self-evaluations and evaluations of out-group members. We then outline how positive intergroup relations may result via the implementation of specific techniques fundamental to the in-group-favoring norm, including emphasizing the value of interactions with the out-group, establishing cooperative intergroup norms, and establishing superordinate goals. In so doing, we discuss how classic moderators of intergroup relations, including leadership, guilt, and in-group norms are facilitators of positive intergroup relations …

Empathic Joy In Positive Intergroup Relations, Todd L, Pittinsky, R. Matthew Montoya Sep 2016

Empathic Joy In Positive Intergroup Relations, Todd L, Pittinsky, R. Matthew Montoya

Psychology Faculty Publications

Research on empathy focuses almost exclusively on its negative variety, empathic sorrow, either by defining empathy as a state involving negative emotions or by confining its empirical study to the negative. In contrast, we investigate empathy's positive variety, empathic joy. We do so in the context of intergroup relations. A total of 1,216 predominantly White teachers participated in a yearlong investigation of whether their attitudes toward, and empathy for, their predominantly ethnic minority students affected their teaching style and the students’ learning. Consistent with expectations, we found that teachers’ experience of empathic joy predicted better student outcomes and that it …
