Dominica: High-Speed, Low-Capacity Dryer, Jason Levand
ETHOS Technical Reports
University of Dayton’s ETHOS program sent a team of three engineering students to Dominica, to assist the Dominica Manufacturing Association (DMA) in their various efforts around the island. This report will focus on the efforts of one of the students who was assigned to work with Caribbean Agro Producers Co. (CAPCO) at their factory located on the northern side of the island in Wesley, where CAPCO produces a variety of herbal products. Like most areas in Dominica, Wesley experiences heavy amounts of rainfall, especially during summer months, as well as year-round levels of high humidity. The student was not given …

A Clean Energy Utility For Multifamily Housing In A Deregulated Energy Market, Ata Raziei, Kevin P. Hallinan, Robert J. Brecha
A Clean Energy Utility For Multifamily Housing In A Deregulated Energy Market, Ata Raziei, Kevin P. Hallinan, Robert J. Brecha
Physics Faculty Publications
Energy efficiency and renewable energy (EERE) investment in multifamily residences in the United States has not kept pace with investment in resident-owned facilities. Split incentives, where owners cannot benefit economically from energy cost savings for residences and resident investment in EERE is not feasible, have posed a significant barrier. A clean energy utility is posited to circumvent this barrier. This utility would be responsible for power purchase from the grid, ideally as a real-time purchase agent from the grid manager; investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy; and demand management through control of water heating, as well as supply-side management …

(Mis)Representation Of Burmese Metal Music In The Western Media, Heather Maclachlan
(Mis)Representation Of Burmese Metal Music In The Western Media, Heather Maclachlan
Department of Music Faculty Publications
Heavy metal music is performed in Burma (also known as Myanmar) by two distinct groups of musicians: generalists, who are part of the mainstream music industry, and underground bands, who differentiate themselves from the mainstream industry in a number of ways. Importantly, the underground performers insist on presenting nothing but their own original songs. Western-educated journalists have recently published a number of articles about these underground bands, equating their original creations with resistance against the military junta that controlled Burma for the past half-century. The author argues that the metanarrative revealed in such media reports does not accord with the …

Health-Related Quality Of Life Increases Similarly In Type 2 Diabetic Versus Non-Diabetic Patients Following 7-12-Week Cardiac Rehabilitation, Caroline M. Wald, Anne R. Crecelius
Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications
PURPOSE: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and results in substantial healthcare expenditures. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important aspect in long-term recovery for patients with cardiovascular disease. As such, improvement in HRQoL is a relevant outcome for determining cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) program efficacy. Increasingly, diabetic patients are participating in CR and face additional challenges to HRQoL, yet there is a lack of research addressing program efficacy in this population. This study tested the hypothesis that CR would effect a favorable change in HRQoL for both diabetic (D; n = 37) and …

Sticky Legacies: Persistence Of State Constitutional Provisions, Nancy Martorano Miller, Maria Aroca, Keith E. Hamm, Ronald D. Hedlund

In this paper, we assess the evolution of 32 state constitutions and the U.S. Constitution over a 100+ year time period (1776-1907). We construct an original sectionlevel dataset containing the text of every section within a constitution for every year between the adoption of the state’s first constitution and 1907. We classify each section by topic and compare the content of each new constitution as well as the impact of amendments. With a subset of these data, we analyze the extent to which sections were added, deleted, modified and remained the same over time using a novel approach that relies …
America’S Legendary Ignorance About Africa Persists, Julius A. Amin
America’S Legendary Ignorance About Africa Persists, Julius A. Amin
History Faculty Publications
In an increasingly interconnected and technological global environment, ignorance of Africa is no longer acceptable. This, especially from major political leaders. Yet, examples of such ignorance are evident in the current American presidential campaign. Neither the Republican nominee Donald J. Trump nor the democratic nominee Hillary R. Clinton has articulated any concrete vision for an African policy.

Disputes over whether teachers who are not union members must pay for the benefits they receive under their bargaining contracts have been litigated for almost 40 years. Amid conflict over the ability of teachers’ unions to collect fair share fees from nonmembers, the Supreme Court re-entered the controversy in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association (2016), leaving the door open to future litigation on the status of fair share fees.

India: Distributed Solar Dryer, Robert Greene, Maria Czerwonka
ETHOS Technical Reports
A team of two engineers travelled to Mysore, India arriving in the early summer of 2016 and stayed for ten weeks. The engineers partnered with a local non-governmental organization to develop a technology that would improve the livelihoods of the Organization for the Development of People (ODP)’s target population. After researching the needs of the population as well as meeting with the leaders of ODP the engineers decided to create a passive solar dryer capable of drying and preserving a variety of fruits and vegetables. The technology was designed to be accessible to rural farmers in small communities. A prototype …
