This paper summarizes the work performed during the first year of a collaborative Research Initiation in Engineering Formation (RIEF) project focused on assessing the formation of a global learner mindset in engineering students through the use of different types of global engagement interventions without extended international travel. During this year the global engagement interventions have been developed, piloted, and assessed using the Global Engagement Survey (GES) and Global Engineering Competency Scale (GECS) instruments in a pre and post format. The assessment results helped the research team update the interventions and refine the assessment strategy, including the addition of new qualitative …

International experiences, including collaborative online international learning (COIL) experiences that naturally increase accessibility, are of interest to many undergraduate students. These experiences provide educators a unique opportunity to develop a student's entrepreneurial mindset (EM). Additionally, hands-on experiences aligned with the National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) grand challenge themes (Sustainability, Security, Health, and Joy of Living) support connections between the experience, disciplinary knowledge, multicultural awareness, and EM. Through this Work-in-Progress (WiP) study, we seek to answer: 1) How do international experiences influence undergraduate science and engineering students’ EM, and 2) How does the international experience modality (i.e., study abroad or COIL) …

Enhancing Entrepreneurial Minded Learning Of Process Control And Heat Transfer Concepts Using Micromoments And Concept Maps, Erick S. Vasquez-Guardado, Ricardo Gomez Gonzalez, Jean M. Andino, Nilza D. Aples, Xiaojing Yuan

The Entrepreneurially Minded Learning (EML) Framework seeks to infuse an Entrepreneurial Mindset in engineering students. The EML framework is founded on the 3 C’s principles of curiosity, connections, and creating value. Assessing EML efforts, however, is a well-known challenge for many engineering courses that do not have a design component. Through concept maps and micromoment activities, this work seeks to answer the following questions: Does implementing micromoment activities enhance students’ EML in two core areas of chemical engineering, i.e., heat transfer and process controls? A secondary research question is whether introducing a physical device in lectures enhances students’ EML. The …

Using Micromoments And Concept Maps To Enhance Entrepreneurially Minded Learning Of Indoor Air Pollution Control, Jean M. Andino, Erick Salvador Vasquez-Guardado, Ricardo Gomez Gonzalez, Xiaojing Yuan, Nilza D. Aples
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Micromoments targeted toward indoor air quality were introduced to students in an Air Quality Engineering course to enhance their entrepreneurial mindset. Three micromoment activities, i.e., “Question Frenzy”, “Make It Relevant”, and “How Do We Make It Better?” that are linked, respectively, to the curiosity, connections, and creating value elements of EM were deployed in the class in the context of the use of a Corsi Rosenthal cube (a do-it-yourself structure that has recently become popular as an inexpensive way to reduce indoor particle pollution). Students generated concept maps pre-and post- micromoment intervention using the freely available CMap Tools software. The …

Third Circuit Buries The Theft-Robbery Distinction In Graves, Richard Smith
Third Circuit Buries The Theft-Robbery Distinction In Graves, Richard Smith
University of Dayton Law Review
To the layperson, the distinction between theft and robbery may not be entirely clear. In fact, outside a law school or a courtroom, it would not be unusual to find people using the terms interchangeably. The similarities of the offenses lend themselves to this confusion. They both involve an offender taking something that does not belong to them from someone else. But there is a reason they were distinguished by the common law and remain distinguished in modern law today. It speaks to our fundamental notions of fairness and justice to treat differently those that engage in “safe” criminal behavior …

Morgan V. Sundance: A Legal Overview Of The Prejudice Requirement In Arbitration And Its Impact On Litigation, Sergio Fernandez
University of Dayton Law Review
Since the enactment of the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”) in 1925, arbitration clauses have been embedded in the commercial contractual ambit and have been a predominant tool employed not only in transactions between corporations, but most importantly between corporations and individuals. Arbitration is a tool used in both the public and private sector to resolve disputes without channeling the usual litigation route. Arbitration, like other forms of alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”), has attributes beneficial to the disputing parties. It “reduces the judiciary’s workload and reduces litigation costs, allowing companies to offer lower prices and higher wages.” It is known to …
Double Standards Or Doubling Down On Mistakes? A Comparative Analysis Of The Outcomes And Effects In State Of Tennessee V. Radonda Vaught And Ohio V. Dr. William Husel, Emily Witker
University of Dayton Law Review
Nobody is perfect. This is a difficult reality for many to accept, but a person’s imperfections are a key factor in shaping their identity as they contribute to their personal growth by learning from the mistakes they make throughout their life. Mistakes in one’s career are no exception and can have varying degrees of consequences, especially in a career involving the care of another human being. The potential consequences for those working in the medical field can be considered some of the most extreme as medical personnel’s actions directly affect the lives of those who they are caring for.

Are We Relying On The Wrong Data? Analysis Of E-Journal Usage Data At Seven R1 And R2 Research Universities, Simon Robins
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
Using data from seven R1 and R2 universities in Ohio, this study seeks to determine the extent of usage of full-text e-journal articles stored across multiple platforms. Specifically, COUNTER 5 data is presented from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer), looking at usage within each of the publishers’ respective platforms, as well as in EBSCO, JSTOR, and OhioLINK’s Electronic Journal Center platform. The overarching goal of the analysis is to identify where exactly usage occurred for this e-journal content within the different platforms, especially in cases where an individual title has duplicate full-text …

Bal-A-Vis-X Intervention To Improve Upper Limb Coordination In Children With Disability: A Pilot Study, Marta Boot, Zoe Clark, Kyla Hill, Mckenzie Stefanoff, Betsy Donahoe Fillmore, Trisha Renner, Bo Slutz, Mary I. Fisher
University of Dayton Doctor of Physical Therapy Annual Research Symposium
Purpose/Hypothesis: Balance/Auditory/Vision exercises (Bal-A-Vis-X) consists of a series of exercises using sand-filled bags and racquet balls. Most of the exercises are completed while standing on a rocker board and heavily rooted in rhythm. The rhythmic patterns are utilized to facilitate focused concentration, crossing midline, motor planning, right/left awareness, eye-hand coordination, balance, bilateral coordination, body and spatial awareness. Only a few published studies have explored Bal-A-Vis-X as an intervention in therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of Bal-A-Vis-X to improve upper limb coordination in children with motor delays.
Number of Subjects: Fifteen children with motor delays …
