Addams’S Methodologies Of Writing, Thinking, And Activism, Marilyn Fischer
Addams’S Methodologies Of Writing, Thinking, And Activism, Marilyn Fischer
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
To understand Addams’s texts, readers need to attend both to her evolutionary methodologies and to her interpretive strategies. Addams was an evolutionary scientist and sociologist in the days before natural selection became merged with genetics and before sociology adopted a stance of positivistic objectivity. Like other intellectuals at the nineteenth century’s turn, Addams addressed contemporary social problems by locating them within their evolutionary histories and proposing ways of moving society toward healthy equilibrium. She used specific social theories as tools, selecting the ones best suited for each given social problem. Evolutionary theorizing served as foundation and framing for her writings. …

Full-Text Retrievals And Ebsco Discovery Service: Assessing Usage Of E-Journals Across Multiple Platforms, Simon Robins
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
This study utilizes COUNTER 5 data from the University of Dayton (UD) to measure full-text retrievals of e-journal articles from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer). Usage data from these publishers’ e-journals within EBSCO is compared to the same content when accessed from publisher platforms such as Wiley Online Library or SpringerLINK. Building on previous studies that have largely focused on links (or referrals) from the library discovery layer to publisher platforms, this study analyzes usage of full text-articles stored within EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost subject databases to consider how these full-text …

Screening And Assessment Of Cancer-Related Fatigue: A Clinical Practice Guideline For Health Care Providers, Mary I. Fisher, Joy C. Cohn, Shana Harrington, Jeannette Lee, Daniel Malone
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most common side effect of cancer treatment. Regular surveillance is recommended, but few clinical practice guidelines transparently assess study bias, quality, and clinical utility in deriving recommendations of screening and assessment methods. The purpose of this clinical practice guideline (CPG) is to provide recommendations for the screening and assessment of CRF for health care professions treating individuals with cancer. Following best practices for development of a CPG using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) Statement and Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI) Guidelines Trust Scorecard, this CPG included a systematic search of the …

Reflections On Charlene's Influence, Marilyn Fischer
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
A contemporary appraisal of the breadth, significance, and legacy of the work of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, this book brings together writings focused on pragmatist feminism/feminist pragmatism, contemporary pragmatism, William James and the reconstruction of philosophy, education and American philosophy in the 21st century.
Charlene Haddock Seigfried is a looming figure in American thought and feminist theory who coined the phrase 'pragmatist feminist' which has become an increasingly important concept in contemporary philosophy. Seigfried argues that pragmatism and its rich history is a natural ally for feminism and that the creative combination of these two traditions can pave the way for …

Are You Above Average? The Lake Wobegon Effect, Raymond Reid
Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog
If there were children living on Old Kernersville Lake I’m sure they would be described as “above average,” just like those in Garrison Keillor's fictional Lake Wobegon, “where all the women are strong and all the men are good-looking.”

Racing To Equality: A Critique Of Female Exclusion In Motorsports, Luke Colegrove
Racing To Equality: A Critique Of Female Exclusion In Motorsports, Luke Colegrove
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I wrote this article as an assignment for my ENG 198 class. We were originally assigned to establish a research-supported argument on the subject of gender, choosing the direction we wanted to take. As a fan of all types of motorsports, I noticed a lack of competition among males and females on the professional level. There are numerous examples of talented women in the sport, and I believed their voices needed to be heard. This inspired me to develop this piece of writing. After multiple drafts, peer reviews, and personal critiques by my professor, I was able to create an …

Addressing Stem Gender Disparity, Liesl Carter
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I had written this piece under my English 198 class theme of gender. I wanted to explore why there is a continued gender gap in STEM. I had researched and analyzed articles that worked to explain this concept. I then conducted personal research in the form of a survey and interview to apply my findings to personal life experiences particularly at the University of Dayton. My overall writing process included research and analysis written into numerous drafts which were reviewed by both peers and my professor.

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Background: Self-reported upper extremity function and objective measures are not strongly associated with each other in women treated for breast cancer (BC). It is not known if the lack of relationship between self-reported upper extremity function and objective measurements may be influenced by perceived levels of stress and fear of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between self-reported upper extremity function and the following: perceived stress levels (PS), fear of physical activity (FPA), health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and objective measures of upper extremity function among women treated for BC.
Methods: This cross-sectional observational …

College Students’ Opinions On Climate Change: Do Political Views Matter?, Aileen Hull
College Students’ Opinions On Climate Change: Do Political Views Matter?, Aileen Hull
Honors Theses
Climate change is an ever-impending crisis and the politics surrounding the issue are as contentious as ever, especially in the United States where the political culture is extremely polarized. The polarization of the political parties in the United States makes any environmental policy extremely difficult to pass. Meanwhile, the new generation of young people entering the workforce, voting scene, and public eye are bringing new demands to current climate debates. Youth make up a large share of environmental activism participants and opinion polls show climate change is on the minds of many young people. However, there is a lack of …
Music Therapy In Adult Medical Settings: Recommendations And Advocacy For Sustainable Programs, Margaret Moore
Music Therapy In Adult Medical Settings: Recommendations And Advocacy For Sustainable Programs, Margaret Moore
Honors Theses
This thesis research provides advocacy, strategies, and recommendations for sustainable music therapy program structures in adult medical settings. A review of the related literature justifies the need for and benefits of music therapy programs in adult medical settings. Recommendations for establishing and growing a music therapy program in these settings are based on semi-structured interviews conducted with three music therapists who have successfully implemented cost-effective and sustainable programs. Important considerations identified for program development include what to incorporate in a development pitch, the workload and well-being of the music therapist, and staff perceptions and relationship to the music therapy program.
