Stress-Induced Switching Of Nonlinear Optical-Properties Of Linear-Polymers, Olle Heinonen Jan 1990

Stress-Induced Switching Of Nonlinear Optical-Properties Of Linear-Polymers, Olle Heinonen

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Replacement of every other hydrogen atom in trans-polyacetylene by other atoms, such as fluorine, results in a simple linear polymer with two carbon atoms per unit cell of the polymer chain. In such polymers, dimerization can be induced or destroyed reversibly by the application of a uniaxial stress. As a consequence, the nonlinear optical properties can be switched dramatically between those of dimerized chains, which have degenerate ground states, and nondimerized chains, which have a nondegenerate ground state.

Room-Temperature Optical-Absorption In Undoped Alpha-Al2o3, M. E. Innocenzi, R. T. Swimm, M. Bass, R. H. French, A. B. Villaverde, M. R. Kokta

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Optical absorption over a large dynamic range obtained by two different experimental techniques is reported for an undoped α‐Al2 O3 single crystal. Absorption data are presented in two energy ranges: 0.94–3.5 eV and 4.5–8.6 eV. Vacuum ultraviolet (vuv) absorption measurements were performed on three boules of Czochralski‐grown single‐crystal Al2 O3 with differing starting material purities. The initial powder purities were 99.99%, 99.999%, and 99.999999%. In addition to the vuv measurements, calorimetric absorption results obtained in the visible and near‐infrared (ir) are presented. An empirical formula is obtained that provides an estimate of the absorption coefficient from the near‐ir to the …

Modeling The Cutoff Frequency Of Single-Heterojunction Bipolar-Transistors Subjected To High Collector-Layer Current, J. J. Liou, F. A. Lindholm, B. S. Wu Jan 1990

Modeling The Cutoff Frequency Of Single-Heterojunction Bipolar-Transistors Subjected To High Collector-Layer Current, J. J. Liou, F. A. Lindholm, B. S. Wu

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

High current densities in the collector layer reduce the cutoff frequency of heterojunction bipolar transistors. We develop a model based on analytical expressions that describe this reduction. These expressions represent the contributions from each of six regions defined in the output current‐voltage characteristic. The model has parameters determined entirely by device physical makeup. It has no fitting parameters. Its predictions agree well with experimental data taken on two N/p+/n aluminum‐gallium‐arsenide/gallium‐arsenide transistors having abrupt junctions grown by molecular‐beam epitaxy. Because previous models omitted the effects of high current densities, their predictions agree less favorably. The development of …

Effects Of Using The More Accurate Intrinsic Concentration On Bipolar-Transistor Modeling, J. J. Liou, J. S. Yuan, W. W. Wong Jan 1990

Effects Of Using The More Accurate Intrinsic Concentration On Bipolar-Transistor Modeling, J. J. Liou, J. S. Yuan, W. W. Wong

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A more accurate intrinsic concentration was suggested recently. Discrepancies between using the conventional and the more accurate intrinsic concentrations on bipolar transistor modeling are assessed in this study. Our calculations show that the conventional intrinsic concentration overestimates the collector and base currents by a factor of 1.5 to 2 but affects less severely the steady‐state current gain.

Ion-Ion Recombination In A Gas-Discharge, I. M. Littlewood, R. E. Pyle

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of the recombination of positive methane ions and negative sulfur hexafluoride ions in an electric discharge at atmospheric pressure. The results of the simulation are directly compared with recent experimental measurements of the ion-ion recombination rate in discharges through gas mixtures of methane and sulfur hexafluoride.

Diffusion Of Color-Centers Generated By 2-Photon Absorption At 532-Nm In Cubic Zirconia, Nastaran Mansour, Kamjou Mansour, E. W. Van Stryland, M. J. Soileau Jan 1990

Diffusion Of Color-Centers Generated By 2-Photon Absorption At 532-Nm In Cubic Zirconia, Nastaran Mansour, Kamjou Mansour, E. W. Van Stryland, M. J. Soileau

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We have recently reported the formation of color centers in stabilized cubic zirconia (ZrO2, 18% Y2O3) by two‐photon absorption at 532 nm. Here we present the results of measurements of the transmission of the colored samples as a function of time at room temperature. The results are found to be in good agreement with theory that assumes the color centers diffuse out of the irradiated region. The initial distribution of centers is assumed to have a Gaussian profile. For this model, the diffusion equation was solved exactly and the diffusion constant obtained (∼3.4×10−8 cm2/s).

Multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock Calculation Of The Photoionization Of The Cs 7d Excited-State, H. P. Saha Jan 1990

Multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock Calculation Of The Photoionization Of The Cs 7d Excited-State, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The numerical multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method is used to calculate the photoionization cross section for the Cs 7d excited state. The electron correlation and the dynamical core-polarization effects, which are very important for photoionization-cross-section calculations of the cesium atom, have been taken into account in an ab initio manner through the configuration-interaction procedure. A minimum has been found in the total photoionization cross section. The calculation of the photoionization angular-distribution asymmetry parameter is proved to be an excellent test to determine the existence and location of the minimum in the cross section. The length and velocity forms of the cross …

Near-Threshold K-Shell Photoionization Of Argon, H. P. Saha Jan 1990

Near-Threshold K-Shell Photoionization Of Argon, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The K-shell photoionization cross section of argon near the threshold has been obtained with the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method for continuum wave functions. The electron correlation and the core-relaxation effects that are very important in this process have been taken into account in the calculation very accurately in the ab initio manner through the configuration-interaction procedure. The present results are compared with the experimental measurements and are found to be in excellent agreement. The two-electron resonances that have been observed immediately above the ionization threshold have been identified and assignments have been made to these based on accurate calculations.

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Selected Ns' And Nd' Autoionization Resonances In Ar, Kr, And Xe, Jian Z. Wu, Scott B. Whitfield, C. Denise Caldwell, Manfred O. Krause, Peter Van Der Meulen, Anders Fahlman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Photoionization cross sections (σ) and photoelectron angular distribution parameters (β) across the (ns’,nd’) autoionization resonances for Ar, Kr, and Xe have been measured with photon resolution widths as low as 0.023 Å by means of synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental results are compared with those obtained by other experimental techniques and theoretical results. The enhanced resolution allows a redetermination of the width of the ns’ resonances.

The Relationship Of Structure To Function At The Community College Level: Saddleback College As Model, Lvnn K. Wells Jan 1990

The Relationship Of Structure To Function At The Community College Level: Saddleback College As Model, Lvnn K. Wells

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes how evolving governance arrangements in California public higher education shape operational decisions within a suburban community college speech communication department. Drawing on organizational analysis, it traces the effects of state reform legislation AB 1725, district campus hierarchies, and divisional affiliations on funding streams, credit hour generation, staffing ratios, course scheduling, and general education curriculum. The discussion shows that dependence on statewide full time equivalent student formulas and divisional budget priorities constrains capital purchases, promotes high enrollment basic courses, and limits elective offerings. Curriculum mandates requiring oral communication, writing, and critical thinking further complicate program design, while board …

The Value Of Fuzzy Lines, Stephen W. King Jan 1990

The Value Of Fuzzy Lines, Stephen W. King

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article develops an organizational scheme that explains how administrative structure influences the long term viability of communication programs in higher education. Drawing on organizational theory, it crosses composition and governance dimensions to build a two by two matrix that positions departments along continua from compositionally unified to compositionally diffused and from organizationally coherent to organizationally isolated. Through conceptual argument grounded in bureaucratic analysis, this article advances four propositions linking structural position to instructional capacity, research collaboration, external funding, resource allocation, political influence, and curricular flexibility. It contends that programs located in the unified coherent quadrant capitalize on economies of …

Planning Departmental Structure: Disciplinary Integrity Versus Pragmatic Opportunism, Lloyd Crisp, David Seibert Jan 1990

Planning Departmental Structure: Disciplinary Integrity Versus Pragmatic Opportunism, Lloyd Crisp, David Seibert

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interrogates whether speech communication departments should pursue disciplinary coherence or embrace pragmatic opportunism while adapting to shifting institutional environments. Through case study analysis of structural evolution at a land grant university and a suburban research campus, it traces how size, articulation mandates, physical facilities, campus politics, curricular demand, public image, and faculty composition interact to shape organizational structure, program identity, governance, and resource allocation. A systems theory perspective yields ten planning criteria, showing that alignment with local contingencies rather than idealized disciplinary purity sustains enrollment stability, instructional quality, and faculty legitimacy. By framing communication studies as a socially …

The Structure And Function Of A Community College Speech Communication Department, Francine Roussell Berkey

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article traces how organizational structure directs curriculum development, resource allocation, and staffing in a rural community college speech communication department. By situating the unit within state financing, divisional governance, and institutional committees, this article explains how structure shapes course scheduling, credit hour production, budget flexibility, and faculty workload. Structural analysis reveals that limited fiscal autonomy and small enrollment encourage service oriented curricula, reliance on adjunct instructors, and continuous adaptation to external program reviews. Functional outcomes are linked to broader institutional demands, while an evolutionary perspective highlights recent reorganization debates and their implications for departmental resilience. Findings provide communication administrators …

Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr Jan 1990

Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the belief that minority faculty underrepresentation can be remedied through quick fixes, showing instead that entrenched structural and cultural forces require sustained, systemic responses. Drawing on national doctorate statistics, affirmative action surveys, and illustrative programs at Duke, Bucknell, and Stanford, this article traces how shrinking doctoral pipelines, lucrative private sector opportunities, rising tuition, and inadequate precollege preparation erode the supply of prospective scholars of color. It further reveals that once hired, minority professors encounter disproportionate advising loads, heavy committee service, isolation, and tenure expectations emphasizing quantitative publication metrics. Employing perspectives from higher education administration, diversity research, organizational …
